Make sure to take some time and relax with loved ones during this busy time of year. One of my favorite traditions is decorating the tree with my siblings a few days before the holidays my brother always received Tonka truck ornaments and my sister and I own quite the collection of Barbie ornaments. Much like the holiday season, 4-H is filled with its own traditions. As we get further into the year, keep in mind your favorite 4-H traditions. What makes Lincoln County 4-H special? What sets it apart from other counties? I d love to hear your favorites whether they are continued to this day or have since disappeared! I look forward to hearing about the many ways in which Lincoln County is unique! May you all have a blessed holiday season! In 4-H spirit, Katherine (CWF) Delegates Thank you 4-H Leaders and Jr. Leaders for sponsoring 2 delegates to attend the Citizenship Washington Focus Trip for The CWF trip is a great chance for 4-Hers to visit Washington D.C. and attend 4-H workshops. Thank you to the Awards Selection Committee for selecting the CWF trip delegates. The 4-H members that will attending from Lincoln County are Matthew Bogue and Molly Myers. Congratulations! 4-H Shooting Sports The Lincoln-Union shooting sports program training will begin in January at the Alcester auditorium for all 4-H members. Members must be 8 years old as of January 1, 2017 and no older than 18 as of January 1, 2017 if they want to participate. Youth along with a guardian present may attend training on Sundays at 1:30 PM or Thursdays at 6:30 PM. The first session is Sunday, January 8. Guardians will sign paperwork and will need to pay a fee of $25 for costs of targets, state shoot entry fees, and other expenses throughout the year. Practices for Air Pistol, Air Rifle, Archery, and BB Gun will be held at the Alcester City Auditorium. Practice for 22 Rimfire Pistol and 22 Rimfire Rifle will be announced at a later date. Youth must be enrolled in 4-H before they can be in the shooting sports program. Youth that are not enrolled or do not fit in the required age group cannot practice during any 4-H shooting sports practices-no exceptions. A guardian must be present with their youth at all shooting sports practices they attend. We have some wall space in the hallway next to our office. We would like to change the displays monthly to give all 4-H members a chance to exhibit. Bring your project to the Extension Office and we will get it hung up. No displays can be set on the floor, they all must be able to hang on the wall. 4-H Christmas Trees Visit the courthouse and tour the Christmas Trees that were decorated by the community. Anyone may attend, but only registered volunteers may vote. Using the 4-H Clover Correctly 4-H Leaders, families and members, the guidelines on how to use the 4-H Clover Correctly have been posted on our website under the 4-H Link: Office/4hclover.pdf Please read through it so you are aware of what is required when using the 4-H Clover. Books Needed/Audit for IRS Every 4-H Club is required to turn in their completed Secretary Book into the Extension Office. We still need them from the following 3 clubs: Beaver Creek Livestock, Heartland Helpers, and Lincoln Blinkers. Clubs also need to complete pages of their 4-H Club Treasurer s Book for for their club audit and turn them into the Extension Office. We must submit the financial information to SDSU to be used for IRS reporting requirements. We still need them from the following 5 clubs: Beaver Creek Livestock, Heartland Helpers, Lincoln Blinkers, Lincoln County Livestock, and Lincoln- Union Shooting Sports. Lincoln County Livestock 4-H Club help with fall work Recently the Lincoln County Livestock 4-H club members helped with fall clean-up at the Hyronimus farm. The work was very much appreciated and it was expressed how fortunate we are to live in a community where people support others and will pitch in when there is a need. The Extension office has project curriculums available to borrow. If you prefer to purchase curriculums they are available at Curriculums may be displayed as a Project at 4-H Achievement Days and State Fair. Requirements are in the state fair book available at H Calendars Order your H Calendar and support South Dakota 4-H. 4-H'ers who enter photography exhibits at the South Dakota State Fair have the opportunity to be featured in the annual South Dakota 4-H Calendar. Registered volunteers Civil Rights Training Video Assuming you have already re-enrolled, the steps to watch the Civil Rights Training Video are: *Log into *Click edit by your name *Click continue at the bottom of the Profile Information Page. You will see highlighted in yellow that all volunteers must watch the Civil Rights Training Video. *Click on the link there which will bring you to an IGrow page, scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see the Civil Rights Training Section, click on the arrow to view the video training. *When video training is complete, return back to the additional information page, scroll down and type in your name and date in the civil rights training completed box. If you haven t re-enrolled online yet, please do so. Note: if you have been a volunteer in the past and viewed the required 6 training videos you do not have to watch them again. If you have never watched the 6 training videos it is required to do so along with this Civil Rights Video. 5 South Dakota State 4-H Youth Council will be doing a Head-to-Toe Drive for their State-Wide Service Project Are you doing some fall cleaning and going through your closets? The South Dakota State 4-H Youth Council selected a head to toe drive for their state-wide community service project. They want 4-H members, clubs, and leaders to consider donating any type of clothing item to their local shelters, coat drives, etc. in your community, explained Audrey Rider, SDSU Extension State 4-H Volunteer Field Specialist. This is a way for people to give back to their local communities and help out local families and people in need by giving clothes, jackets, shoes, etc. Counties throughout South Dakota will compete to see which 4-H county can donate the most items. The winning county will receive a prize. The Youth Council is asking counties, clubs and members to be creative and come up with fun ways to collect items and make a huge impact with this statewide community service project, Rider said. With your help, we are looking forward to improving the lives of children and families in our state. Families, clubs, etc. are urged to donate to be part of the challenge. Donate to any place you wish and then just keep track of the amount of items on the donations tab form available at the Extension office. Forms are due to the Extension Office by the August 1, 2017 deadline. 4-H Clubs may apply for Mini-Grants Each year, the South Dakota 4-H Leaders Association awards Mini-Grants across the state to county or 4-H club projects. The purpose of the 4-H Grants Program is to address youth needs at the local level. The 4-H Leaders Association recognizes that the greatest impact of 4-H occurs at the local level, usually between youth and 4-H volunteers. Criteria for awarding funds include: * Potential for youth involvement in the planning and implementation of the project. * Potential impact on addressing youth issues at a local level through either a traditional or nontraditional setting. * Potential for increasing life skill outcomes for youth * Potential for reaching expanded youth audiences e.g. at-risk low income, single parent families, other cultures, disabled, etc. * Potential for transitioning new youth audiences into more traditional or ongoing 4-H programs. Grants funds can be used to purchase educational materials and supplies, expenses/honorariums for speakers, travel and training. Generally, snacks for refreshments, give-away items, e.g. t-shirts, etc. and building rental are not approved expenditures. Monies can t be used for capital equipment or hardware (defined as items and material with a life expectancy of greater than five years) or building drives. Mini grant applications are due December 31 st. They must be received via or postmarked by 12/31/16. Late applications will not be considered.
