However we all learn at different paces and with various delivery methods. I am a visual learner. I have to see what is trying to be taught. Just reading about a process doesn t mean I understand it. Hands on is a great delivery method for me personally and can be a great teaching tool. 4-H speaks loudly towards this delivery method and allows youth to submerse themselves in a topic area and learn from their peers and club leaders. Asking questions is a great way to learn. There is no wrong question, and if you have that question odds are there probably are more people with the same question. Having someone to look up to and pose those questions to is equally important. Support systems are huge in a child s life and we all know every family is different. I encourage our 4-H youth and adults to reach out to those who may need a mentor or guidance. Healthy relationships are a crucial part of what we do as a 4-H families. Child psychology shows that it is the parental involvement and the environment in which families raise their children that leads youth to be successful adults. 4-H traditionally has a strong tie to parental involvement. For example the kids who participate in 4-H programs have to get to and from events. Drive time = time to talk. Who s loading the BB gun? Who is making sure chores get done correctly- Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Grandma, other family members, mentors, etc. My point being, someone needs to help the child learn. Being a supportive and energetic role model is part of the 4-H experience. Below is a link to a great article that delves deeper into how important healthy relationships are to all our youth. Conference April 11 The State 4-H Leaders conference will be held on April 11 this year in Mitchell, SD. You will find the brochure in pdf form that you can view or print here: The conference will be held at the Davison County Extension Complex from 8:30-4:15. The morning begins with a keynote presentation Mission, Experience, Impact presented by Kim Reaman, a 4-H Volunteer Development Specialist from Wyoming. Over lunch we will have various guest speakers and then the 4-H Leaders Business meeting. The afternoon will give you the opportunity to choose from 3 different workshop sessions. We invite you to bring your 4-H members along as well, either to attend the conference, or to take part in INB. INB is presented by the 4-H Youth Council for ages In addition to what you will find in the brochure we invite you to participate in a Swap Shop! Do you have instructions and materials to share from club and county 'learn it, make it, exhibit it, share it' activities????? This is an opportunity to swap those ideas and materials (adapted from Colorado 4-H). Here's how it works: I have some materials and instructions left from a club project making pompom snowmen for gifts for elderly in nursing homes; I put them in a clear plastic bag or box; set the item out for display and everyone has a chance to grab it and take it back for a project idea for their local 4-H'ers. A great way to share our talents and treasures! The tables will be set up all day. Apply for SD 4-H Youth Council The South Dakota 4-H Youth Council in South Dakota has a long and rich history.
