1 4-H News Flash Aurora, Buffalo, Jerauld, & Sanborn Counties September, 2012 Aurora County Extension Office PO Box 397 Plankinton, SD (605) Jerauld County Extension Office PO Box 366 Wessington Springs, SD (605) Sanborn County Extension Office PO Box 397 Woonsocket, SD (605) From my desk to yours Audra Scheel, 4-H Program Advisor, Well achievement days and the South Dakota State Fair has come and gone. I must say it is a relief to have it done, but it was a lot of fun seeing the youth from our counties do extremely well at many levels of competition. You truly are a great group of people to work with. Thank you for making my first year as a 4-H Advisor a good one! We are all constantly learning in this world we live in and striving to make 4-H even better. 4-H has more people involved at the local level now more than ever. At the State Fair this year 4-H livestock exhibits jumped to 3,624, up from 3,013 in H display exhibits were at 11,320, up from 10,079 in The Youth in Action category, which includes public presentations, special foods, judging contests, skill-a-thons, and fashion revue, increased from 1,227 in 2011 to 2,140 this year. These numbers are a tribute to our success and the power 4-H has among our youth. I want to personally thank all the volunteers who helped at achievement days and state fair. You do an amazing job! You are a testament to what citizenship is all about. Oct. 1 st is the deadline for record books in the county office or to your club leader in the case of Aurora County. Also each treasurer from each club needs to submit the Treasurer Report for the year to the county office by Oct. 1. This goes back to the accountability things we talked about this spring that were coming down from the State 4-H office. Your leaders have been notified and we will be sending out the specific page so an audit of your club financials can be done. If you have any questions please contact your county office or myself. We will begin enrolling for the new 4-H year on Oct. 1st. I am excited and pleased about the possibilities 4-H Online will bring to the table as we begin a new year. We will be planning meetings and getting information to you about the new system and what that means to you at the local level. Take care I m sure we will be seeing you soon!

7 Page 7 4-H News Flash! 1. What is 4-H Online? It is an online program that allows the families to make sure their information is true and correct. Families will be responsible for entering such events as Achievement Days and State Fair. Each family will have their own account where their children will enroll and record their projects. 2. Why does this help your county office? We are taking the data entry and putting it in your responsible and capable hands. All of the office secretaries work a part time schedule; if the family enters their own projects there will be fewer mistakes and we can provide more and better programming. 3. What is the office secretary and 4-H Advisor s job then? We will monitor and approve member records and registrations while continuing to bring fun educational 4-H events to the county. We will be able to see any and all changes you make to your account and all registrations will have to be approved in our office before going to the state level. 4. Will communication with the county extension office be better? Yes! Counties will have a quick way to communicate to all of their families through the 4HOnline calendar as well as uploading newsletters and announcements to 4HOnline. 5. What if we don t have internet access? We realize there will be some families that don t have a home computer or access. We will work with you to ensure that your children are enrolled and have every opportunity to enjoy 4-H!
