2 Project Information Rabbit Club The WCF Rabbit tattooing will be held on Monday, March 21st at the Walker County Fairgrounds in the Committeemen's Room starting at 6:00 pm. This is a mandatory meeting for those who plan on exhibiting at the Walker County Fair. Exhibitors must be present. Only those with valid and written excuses submitted within 7 days to the WCFA Rabbit Committee will be considered. If an exhibitor is ill or unable to attend due to another school function, they must have someone else bring their rabbits to be tattooed as this is the ONLY time they will be tattooed. There is a Club Meeting on March 7th at 6:30pm at the CEO. Entry forms/fees will be collected. If members are not present at this meeting, it is their responsibility to get their entry form to the WCFA Livestock secretary by March 10th. Lamb/Goat Club The Lamb/Goat Club will meet at the County Extension Office on Tuesday, March 22nd at 6:30 p.m. The topic of the meeting will be preparing for the Walker County Fair. Huntsville Food & Nutrition Club The Huntsville Food and Nutrition Club will meet at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 8th at the Huntsville Church of Christ. They will meet again on March 22nd. This will be the Huntsville Food and Nutrition Club s final meeting. New Waverly Food Club The NW Food Club will meet on March 13th from 2-4pm at New Waverly High School. Project record forms will be collected. Swine Club The Swine Club will meet at the County Extension Office on Monday, March 14th at 6:00 p.m. New Waverly Community Club New Waverly Community Club will meet Monday, March 14th at 6:00 pm at New Waverly Elementary School and will be discussing and collecting Project Record Forms and attendance sheets. Please note this will be the last New Waverly Club Meeting before the fair. Scramble Heifer Club The Scramble Heifer Club will have their weigh-in at 9:00 a.m. on March 12th at the Walker County Fairgrounds. Rifle Club The Rifle Club will be shooting on Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Huntsville Police Range or the Extension Office. They will not meet during spring break. Poultry Club The Poultry Club meeting will not meet this month. Make sure to get your project record forms turned in. Horse Club The Walker County 4-H Horse Club will meet on March 1st at the Walker County Fairgrounds in the Committeeman s Room for their 2016 Kick Off Meeting. Please join us for this informational meeting to learn about changes in the Horse Club program in The Horse Club is having a workshop over spring break at the WCF on March 9th from 2-4. Sign up here: horse-club Beef Club Beef Club will meet on Tuesday, March 15th at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office The topic of the meeting will getting ready for the show. ****Steer weigh in Saturday March 5th at the Walker County Fairgrounds.**** Commercial Heifers The Commercial Heifer Club will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22nd at the County Extension Office. Sewing Club The Sewing Club will not meet this month. WCF Clothing entry forms are due to the CEO by March 4th. Clover Kids Clover Kids will meet at 6:00 pm on Thursday, March 10th at the County Extension Office. Shooting Sports-Shotgun Club The Shotgun Club will be alternating days between Tuesday and Wednesdays to Dry Fire at the Extension Office and shoot at Able s. Everyone is assigned a specific day for Dry Fire. If you do not currently have a day assigned call the office first. If you are interested in joining the Shotgun Club you must attend a Safety Meeting prior to attending a club meeting. There will be a Shotgun Safety Meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29th at the Extension Office. March 21st- March 28th- Monday Club Food & Nutrition Quiz Bowl 4-5pm at CEO Photography 4-5pm at CEO Horse Club will be meeting every Monday at 5:30pm at the Extension Office Beef Quiz Bowl Practice will continue on March 30th

3 Walker County Fair Information Walker County Fair Web Site The Official Fair Web Site is up and running and is full of information. Check it Out!!! ** New Scales** The Fair Association has purchased new Digital Scales for the fairgrounds. These scales will be used at the 2016 Walker County Fair. Walker County Fair Workdays The WCF workdays will be held on Saturday March 20th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and March 26th from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. REMEM- BER, all exhibitors must have 5 work hours before March 31, 2016 to be eligible to exhibit a project at the 2016 Walker County Fair. PLEASE VISIT FOR A COMPLETE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR THE 2016 WALKER COUNTY FAIR REMINDER OF PARENT WORK HOURS The Walker County Fair requires a parent or guardian to work 2 hours per child/exhibitor during the WCF. The online Parent/Worker Registration System is ready! Please go to the fair website: then choose the Get Involved tab and Worker Registration. You MUST have your child's Exhibitor ID# in order to register. If you do not have the number or have forgotten or misplaced it, please jyargo@new-waverly.k12.tx.us. Keep in mind when choosing a date to work that this year the fair begins on March 31st. Project Record Forms Project Record Forms and Attendance Sheets are due to the Walker County Extension Office no later than 5:00 pm, Friday, March 18th. REMEMBER: All 4-H exhibitors must attend at least 3 meetings to be eligible to show at the Walker County Fair. Those failing to attend 3 meetings will be required to write a research paper. A minimum of 5 pages per missed meeting. The topic of the research paper will be assigned at time of request. My suggestion is to attend your project club meetings. WCF Rabbit Tattooing MARCH 21, :00 pm Walker County Fair Grounds ~ Committeemen's Room This is a MANDATORY meeting for all those who plan on exhibiting at the Walker County Fair!!! This will be the only night that meat babies will be tattooed for showing. WCF Photography Contest & Walker County 4-H Photography Contest entries due Wednesday, MARCH 23rd Walker County Fairgrounds Main Building 4 PM to 7 PM WCF-$5.00 Entry Fee for each Photo 4-H - $1.00 if not entering the fair

4 2016 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Congratulations to ALL of the S.A.L.E participants over the last couple of weeks! Between showing livestock and competing in contests everyone gave it their all, and we had a great time. A BIG Congratulations to Chance Clipper for competing and WINNING the first ever Youth Horse Challenge at S.A.L.E!!! Chance was the recipient of a $10,000 scholarship because of his hard work and dedication. Joshua Cramer placed 5th in his class with his Brahman heifer. Way to go Joshua! 6 Food Challenge Practice Attention those of you that are competing at the Food Challenge Contest in Houston on March 8th!! We will be having a Food Challenge workshop at the County Extension office on Monday, March 7th from 9am 3pm! We will be practicing and getting the supplies ready to go. We hope to see you there! Call us at the office if you have any questions. Horse Club The Horse Club is ready to kick off their year! The first meeting will be an informational one at the Walker County Fairgrounds Committeeman s Room starting at 6pm on March 1st. Other important dates to mark on your calendars are: March 9th Horse Clinic March 29 Informational Meeting at Storm Shelter Practices with horses will start in April 2016 State Fair of Texas/2017 Major Show Steer Tags If You Plan on Showing Steers at any of the 2017 Major Shows or the 2016 State Fair of Texas... Now is the time to order steer tags. Please call or stop by the Extension office ( ) to order your 2016 State Fair of Texas/2016 Major show steer tags. The deadline to order tags is April 8th. Scholarship applications are available at the Extension Office. Deadline for turning in the application is April 15th. Huntsville Ag Booster Scholarship Walker County 4-H seniors and FFA seniors are eligible to apply for the Huntsville Ag Booster Scholarship. The application and questionnaire can be downloaded from the HISD website. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 15th. Don t miss this great opportunity. Wesley & Wilma Sherrill Memorial Scholarship Walker County 4-H members that will be graduating from high school this spring are eligible to apply for the Wesley & Wilma Sherrill 4-H Memorial Scholarship. This $ scholarship was established in memory of Wesley & Wilma Sherrill. Mr. Sherrill was a County Extension Agent in Walker County from the 1950 s until his retirement in Applications are available at the Extension Office. The deadline for turning in applications is April 22nd.

8 Big Time in D9 will take place on April 29 & 30th at Lone Star College, Montgomery Campus The Woodlands, TX Pit Master (for adults and members): Categories include Brisket, Pare Ribs, 1/2 Chicken and Pinto Beans **NEW Hamburger Cook off!** Food Show: showcase culinary skills, including presentation and interview. Share the Fun: individual or team performance in 1 of 7 categories Celebrate 4-H, choreographed Routine, Musical/ Instrumental, Solo/Band Performance, Poetry/Prose, Vocal, Comedy Duds to Dazzle: redesign and repurpose discarded garments into new wearable, non-wearable or accessory items. Consumer Decision Making: apply knowledge and experience in consumer education by analyzing consumer situations. Educational Presentation: planned presentations where one 4-Her teaches others about a project or activity. Photography: demonstrate skills in composition, light, story line, posing and awareness. Photography Judging: determine placings and cuts, pair switching, and simple bust. Fashion Show: exhibit skills of wardrobe selection, clothing construction or comparison shopping, fashion interpretation, style, good grooming and poise in front of others, modeling and presentation. Fashion Story Board: poster board display of original designs using illustration, such as fabric swatches, patterns and photos. Pinewood Derby **NEW** derby competition among fellow 4-H members, with a final race staged at the Award Assembly. Quiz Bowls: Beef, Horse, Swine, and Food & Nutrition Bowls where 4-Hers demonstrate critical thinking abilities and reasons. Ag Product ID: identify 20 Ag products, each with a multiple choice question pertaining to the product. Healthy Lifestyles: competitive event utilizing knowledge/skills gained through participation in 4-H Healthy Lifestyles programs. Leaders 4 Life: designed to challenge county 4-H council teams in leadership skills, parliamentary procedure and service learning. 4-H SET Research Poster Contest: 4-Her s apply scientific method to 4-H project experience. Food Challenge: Hers demonstration of culinary knowledge and skills. Produce Judging: participants recognize unripe or over ripe produce, discern consistency in produce classes and detect blemishes on produce. Robotics Challenge: 3-5 members have three hours to design, program and test their robot for the competition. Wildlife Challenge: demonstration of appreciation and understanding of the natural world with emphasis on sports fishing, hunting/wildlife, forestry, entomology and wildlife habitat evaluation program.

9 4-H Happenings Walker County 4-H Photography Contest The Walker County 4-H Photography contest will once again be combined with the county fair photography contest. You ll turn in your photos on March 23 from 4-7 pm at the main building at the fairgrounds. If you will be entering the same photo in the fair contest that you will in the 4-H contest, please follow all of the fair guidelines for mounting and display. If your just entering the photo in the 4-H Contest please call the office for photo categories and photo mounting information. The cost of entry is $1 per photo and that fee is waived if you are entering the photo in the fair. The county contest is a qualifying contest for the state contest at the senior level. All 1 st place photos in each category in the senior division are eligible competition in the state contest. The county extension office will work with these participants to get their photos entered if they wish. This is a contest that ALL of our members can participate in. Please don t hesitate to contact Kristy at the Extension Office if you have any questions at all about this 4-H opportunity. District 4-H Photography Contest Entry/Registration Deadline: Online entry using 4-H CONNECT must be done by March 25, If you are interested in entering the District 4-H Photography Contest we will help you through the entry process when you turn in your county photography entries on March 23rd at the fairgrounds. Entry Fee: $5.00 for each photo entered. Bring a digital copy of your photos. No printed pictures are needed. Winning photos will be displayed at Lone Star Community College-Montgomery in the Woodlands, Texas during the District 9 4-H Roundup.
