12 Effingham County 4-H Volunteer Training 30 Days of Doing Volunteer training is essential so that volunteers not only understand the expectations of their role but have the skills, competencies, and information necessary to be successful. We're here to do everything we can to help you. You can access these training courses 24/7! Visit volunteers/training for more information. Someone will win a $10,000 scholarship for their child and your state 4-H program could receive $10,000 to inspire kids in the community! For more information visit Leaders Training There will be a 4-H Leaders training on September 13, The meeting will begin 6 p.m. at the University of Illinois Extension office in Effingham County located at 1209 N. Wenthe Drive, Effingham. All volunteers welcome! Project Selection Guide 4-H Leaders may stop by our office to pick up a hard copy of the new Project Selection Guide or you can find (and download) it from the Illinois 4-H projects In 4-H, members learn about topics that interest them. These are referred to as members projects. That could be anything from learning how to cook, build a robot, or care for the environment. One of the most important aspects of 4-H project work is that the 4-H member decides what they want to learn and do as they explore their project. This allows the project to be self-paced, and gives children important skills in setting and working toward their goals. Parliamentary Procedure This session helps volunteers and members understand the basic rules of parliamentary procedure and the basic order of business of a club meeting. It also helps outline the role of officers in a 4-H club Reminder: 4-H Club Annual Financial Statement due September 15 Are your 4-H club s secretary and treasurer s record books up-to-date? All 4-H clubs with a checking or savings account must complete both pages of the 4-H Club Annual Financial Statement form at the end of each 4-H year (Sept. 1 Aug. 31). The financial statement includes a report of income and expenses for the 4-H club checking account (page 1) and/or savings account (page 2). The club treasurer and club leader must sign on page 2 of this form to verify that the information is correct. Also on page 2, the Fiscal Review Committee (a group of 2 or 3 youth and adults who do not have signatory rights on the club s bank account(s) must review the financial records of the 4-H club for the past year and sign to indicate that they have found everything in good order. Contact the county extension office if you need a copy of this financial statement. This is a required step from IRS. Your club can not be reenrolled for the new 4-H year until this is received in the extension office.

13 Effingham County 4-H Congratulations Cleo McManaway for being inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame! Cleo remains a vital volunteer in the Effingham County 4-H program. As a youth, Cleo was very active in 4-H and participated in the 4-H Federation. In his many years as a leader, he has gone door to door asking parents if they would be interested in having their children join the 4-H program. Cleo was very instrumental in getting the referendum passed in Effingham County to support University of Illinois Extension programming. When there is a child in need, Cleo is one to take quick action to make sure those needs are met. He does so without hesitation and that speaks to his character. He has served many years in the announcer stand at the Effingham County Fair calling 4-H members into the show ring. Each time, Cleo takes the time to make sure all youth feel welcome and have a positive experience showcasing their projects. There is a saying that true leaders don t create followers they create more leaders, and that is truly something Cleo has done for many youth in our community. 13

Rick devotes his days during the fair to preparing meals and spear-heading the 4-H family night games. Beth manages the 4-H food stand, helps with registration for the 4-H General Show, and also helps with family night games.

21 Unit 21 4-H News Generosity: Opportunity to value and practice service to others Generosity can be defined as the habit of giving without expecting anything in return. This is exhibited by the third H in the 4-H Pledge. I pledge... my HANDS to larger service giving back to the community; helping family, friends and neighbors; and being grateful for what we have and sharing what we can. For the concept of generosity to be instilled in youth, they need to practice. This can be accomplished through community service projects. However, for youth to truly develop the habit of generosity they need to connect to their communities and learn how to give back to others. They need to be vested in and know the why for the community service project. Components that need to be part of community service projects are: It must be seen as relevant and timely for the 4-H members. They need to see or learn about the needs in their community and what they can do to help with those needs. Members need to be a part of the planning and implementation of the project. The project needs to be necessary and valuable. Members need to feel they made a difference. Members need to reflect on the project. This allows them to think about what they did, and what it meant to them, to others, and to the community. Members need to discuss the impact of their community service project and what they learned. Evaluation gives them direction for improvement, growth, and change. It also allows them to think about what else they might do because of this experience. Including these components as part of the process allows 4-H members to gain an understanding of others needs and learn how to respond to those needs, which leads to the development of values such as compassion and tolerance for diversity. It fosters a sense of pride and ownership for their community. Working along side co-4-h members and other adults leads to that sense of Belonging and develops teamwork skills. Additional benefits of generosity include: Members feel their lives have meaning and purpose. Develops discipline and decision making skills. Fosters respect for others. Learning to consider the perspective of others. Promotes civic responsibility. Promotes a social connection and improves relationships. Being generous encourages members to perceive others in a more positive light and fosters a feeling of connectedness. By focusing on the giving rather than the receiving it shifts focus toward a more outward orientation, rather than constantly focusing on oneself. Members feel good about themselves. When they see someone else benefiting from their kind actions, it promotes a sense of self worth. Opportunities to participate in career-related experiences. How s your club doing with the key element of Generosity? In the next newsletter we will look at the Opportunity for Mastery. U of I Extension Clay, Effingham, Fayette, and Jasper County 21

24 Tips for 4-H Award Applications Illinois 4-H With the introduction of the Illinois 4-H Experience Award application last year, we know there are still questions about how to complete this form. We don t request a lot of information, but there are still a few guidelines you need to follow so that your application showcases your 4-H experiences in their best light. The Illinois 4-H Experience Award Application focuses on all of those events and activities that you have experienced during the 4-H year in four areas: Participation, Community Service, Leadership, and Project Learning. Depending upon the type and number of experiences you report on, members can receive recognition on the Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond or Emerald Clover Award level. Your family calendar, 4-H notes or county summary, checkmarks, and a few written details are all that s needed for even the youngest members to submit this application. This application can be Here are a few tips that cover some of the most common errors we saw from award submissions with this application: All items (Except the 2-3 that refer to two years in a row or multiple years ) should be ONLY from the current 4-H year September 1, 2017 to August 31, All experiences unless indicated otherwise are to be 4-H related! That means it should be a 4-H experience or a youth could attend because there are a 4-H member or because they were representing the 4-H program for their county or state. In the Details box, dates and names of the experience are needed. This info can be short it does not need to have a lot of detail. County Livestock Workshop, Dec 6, State Jr. Leadership Conference, Feb or 4-H Club Mtgs, 10/12, 11/13, 12/10, 1/14 and 2/15 are good examples. Years are not needed as we believe you are following the above instructions that all experiences have taken place within this 4-H year. For some boxes, you may wish to include a bit more information for example, the name of a project area that you exhibited at the county or state fair, or the name of the non-4-h group of which you are an officer. Members cannot use the same exact date/event for more than one spot on the entire form. So if one uses Visual Arts Workshop/March 6 as part of five or more county 4-H activities in Participation, they cannot also use it for the one county 4-H activity in Participation NOR can they use it for Participated in a county 4-H workshop related to my project in Project Learning. If members are submitting the application for the Diamond or Emerald state level, please make sure that you still complete the ENTIRE form, even though you may only be submitting in the Leadership, Community Service, or Project Learning area. For Diamond and Emerald applicants, the State and National requirements must be in the SAME dimension as the one you are applying. So if you are applying for an Emerald Award in Leadership, you must have at least TWO State and/or National level experiences highlighted on the Leadership pages, in addition to two Multi-County/Regional experiences. More information is available on the Quick Tips: Illinois 4-H Experience Application, available through your local Extension office. There is also a Quick Tips: Illinois 4-H Award Application handout available for those older 4-H members who are looking to submit for state awards with the Illinois 4-H State Award Application. Members may apply in any or all of the five award categories: Communications, Community Service, Leadership, Personal Growth, and/or Project Mastery. State winners in these categories can receive educational scholarships or trips to national events. You all have a story to tell about your 4-H experiences learn to tell YOUR story to its best advantage. 24
