Missed Deadlines=Consequences A life lesson that is learned in 4-H is that deadlines are deadlines. When you miss a deadline, there are consequences. For all animal project 4-Hers, there was an important deadline in May. Miss the deadline, and you won t be showing your animals at the fair. The next deadline for animal project 4-Hers is the June 30th stall form. Look for it in your mailbox in June! Joan News for Volunteers Are you a Volunteer? Adults who routinely work with 4-H members in clubs, projects, etc. need to undergo the volunteer screening process, as is policy of the Purdue Extension and the Indiana 4-H Program. If you have not completed this annual process, you are not officially a Purdue Extension/4-H volunteer. Questions? Contact Laura at the Extension Office at ATTENTION PROJECT SUPERINTENDENTS: If we have not received a list of who is serving on your committee for 2016, please turn one in ASAP. We ask that you update us with this information annually. If we do not know who is on your committee, the individuals you are working with ARE NOT APPROVED volunteers and are not in compliance with our policies. 4-H Adult Leaders Meeting The 4-H Adult Leaders will meet on Tuesday, September 13th. The Executive Committee will meet at 6:30 pm and the general meeting will take place at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held in the Porter County Administration Building Room 102A. 4-H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be tentatively on Tuesday, June 21st. The Executive Committee will meet at 6:30 pm and the general meeting will take place at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held in the Porter County Administration Building Room 102A. The Executive Committee will meet on June 27th at 6:00 pm in the Expo East Upstairs. Check the Junior Leader section of the county 4-H website for your most up-to-date Junior Leader news! Members in grades 10 or above can simply answer questions in the 4HOnline event application. County Extension staff will then approve your submission to be forwarded to the State 4-H Office. 4-H News A Note on Record Sheets & Project Completion As fair time draws closer and you worry about completing your fair exhibit, please keep in mind that a record sheet is the minimum completion requirement for a project, presenting an exhibit at the fair is not required for completion. The record sheet should truthfully reflect the content and skills learned in the development of the 4-H project record sheets should indicate that a Latch Hook member purchased the necessary materials and started a rug, pillow, or wall-hanging; that a Swine member purchased hogs and feed and provided care to those animals; and that a Photography member had the necessary equipment and film and attempted to take some photographs. On record sheets that ask for a Club Leader signature, every effort should be made to secure the signature. Record sheets may not be graded as generously as they have been in the past, so members are encouraged to be honest and thorough in filling out their record sheets. Filling in only your name and a few vague answers will not result in project completion. Record sheets are due at the time of project check-in. READ YOUR 4-H PUBLICATIONS! Many of your 4-H questions can be answered by reading your 4-H Pandemonium newsletter, your Porter County 4-H Handbook and project materials, and checking out the website at 4-H Handbook Check the 4-H Handbook at for all your project guidelines and exhibit requirements. STRICT DEADLINE ENFORCEMENT All deadlines will be strictly enforced with a zero tolerance policy for lateness. Be sure you read your Pandemonium newsletter and project materials and adhere to all deadlines! ATTENTION 10 YEAR MEMBERS! Be on the lookout for mail coming soon that contains a questionnaire that we need to have returned ASAP. It will also include information on the 10-year member celebratory breakfast. If your grade is called and you are not there...you will not be able to model your garment. All participants will be judged in the fashion revue portion first, and then proceed to construction judging. If you are a member who has sewn a Non-Wearable item or are not participating in the fashion revue judging we are asking for you to be there at 8:00 also. This is when your project will be judged. Senior Division Members (grades 8-12) judging will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the following order: suits & coats, casual wear, dress-up, free choice, formal wear, and separates. Again, it is best for everyone to be there promptly at 1 p.m. If you are in multiple categories, please do all your modeling first, and then proceed to construction judging. If your categories are back-toback, please don t panic. We will wait on you to change. Don t forget that senior Non-Wearables should be brought in and judged at 1:00 also. The Public Fashion Revue will be in the evening at 7:30 p.m. for family and friends to view all the wonderful outfits you have made. Be there by 7:00 to get dressed and ready to walk the runway! First of all, our Archery workshops will be held in the grandstand area of the fairgrounds on the following Mondays in May: 9th, 16th, and 23rd. Our firearms workshops will be held at the North Porter County Conservation Club on the following Mondays in June: 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th. We have decided to separate the Archery and Firearms workshops to enable our members to better focus on one particular discipline at a time. Important notes: 1. Workshops will be from 5 to 8 each night. 2. Workshops will be canceled if there is inclement weather. 3. You must be a member of the Shooting Sports project to participate, but we are not discipline exclusive (For example, you can be signed up in the archery project and shoot the firearms, but you must be a Shooting Sports project member to participate in any of the workshops). 4. We will be doing Safety training at each workshop, so we will not have a dedicated safety workshop required this year. Please feel free to call/text me at if you have any questions. Due to the nature of my business, I may need to call you back. I am looking forward to seeing you all soon. Dennis Wells, Shooting Sports Superintendent 4-H 4-Mile Hustle Run/Walk & Kids Fun Run! 14 Participating in 4-H Demonstrations & Public Speaking Events helps you improve important skills that help you in school and in life! It s not too late to sign-up for the County Demonstration & Public Speaking contest that is scheduled for June 24th at 11:00 a.m. at the Expo Center. If you haven t signed up yet, please complete and return the enclosed form AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Club News Center Wildcats Before the meeting commenced, we had our annual club pizza party. The pizza was yummy! Thank you, Mrs. Hewlett! Once the meeting began and after all the officer reports, we discussed committees. These included hospice place mats and donations and our April Golden Living Nursing Home visit, where we painted water color hidden pictures, and we made bird feeders using bagels, peanut butter, and bird seed. We laid out the schedule for the upcoming committees including cookie baking, planning for our walk-a-thon which will take place after our June meeting, making library stick puppets, and visiting our senior friends (which occurred on Saturday. We raced matchbox cars on an inclined plane. This is one of the most enjoyable and popular things we do with our Senor friends!) For New Business, we discussed the annual Center Wildcats garage sale taking place in June. (Please come!) We then moved on to the Adult Leader Report, which included "Live, Learn, and Pass It On." The topic for this month was "A little bit of Philosophy." The visual was a dollar bill that was crumpled and muddy and yet did not decrease in value. The lesson is, "No matter how downtrodden and put down a person is, he/she never, ever decreases in value." Then we had the Health and Safety Reports which were on storm safety, including floods, tornadoes, and blizzards. We finished the meeting with a project demonstration by Ben Teel, one of our Safety Officers. His demonstration was on the Jewelry Project and was extremely informative. Submitted by, Luke Trujillo, Center Wildcats Reporter Lakeshore Drifters At our last meeting, we voted to donate $78.00 for 4-H trophies. Also at this meeting no one brought in ANY 4-H t-shirt designs but you still have time to bring in your design at next month's meeting, where we will vote on the best shirt design. The 4th of July parade participation starts at Yost School and ends at Hawthorne Park. Sign up at Signupgenius.com. If we have enough participants, we will fill out the application. There is fair project registration and new process for check in online between May 17th through June 24th. Instructions are in the Pandemonium. 4-H camp is coming soon! To reserve your spot, sign ups are in your Pandemonium. Public speaking sign ups are in the Pandemonium as well. Ten dollars given to everyone who participates. Speech date is June 24th. Next month, we will be having our annual club picnic. Bring a side dish to share and bring plates and table ware for your family. We will provide hot dogs and drinks. Officer elections will be held at this meeting also. Don't forget. Remember to bring in your design for our club t-shirt contest and picnic items. Our next meeting will be on Monday, June 13 at 6:30, Hawthorne Park. Reporter, Angelita Saez Liberty Sunsetters The Liberty Sunsetters started off the May Meeting with the American and 4-H Pledges. Next, we continued with the secretary and treasurer reports. Jacquelynn, Bentley and Evyenia spoke to the club about staying safe during the spring and summer weather with their health and safety reports. We then discussed old business such as the book donated to the hospital and our cookie fundraiser. For new business, the club discussed the upcoming Footloose 5K volunteering opportunity; come out on June 25 th to Lakeland Park for a fun filled night from 5-10 pm. There will be music, food, and games as well as a kid s fun run and a 3 mile run. We also talked about the 4-H 4 Mile Hustle our club will be donating $25 dollars to the Junior Leaders to help support the race. The race will be taking place on Saturday, July 23 at the Porter County Fair. Afterwards, five members gave their wonderful demonstrations to the group. To close, we played a few games of Heads-Up-7-Up and had snacks. Our next meeting is on Sunday, June 26 at 3 pm in the S.O.S room across from the 2 nd floor elevator in the Union Building. Remember to bring your food for the food drive! See you in June! Fair Exhibits Must Be Registered Online by June 24th! (both animal & building projects) Get the details & step-by-step instructions at The online FairEntry system is now open. You must register the exhibits you plan to exhibit at the fair online by June 24 th. To simplify the process of check in night at the 4-H Building, this system will allow our superintendents and volunteers to be well prepared to check in your exhibit(s). To help ease the chaos of 4-H Building exhibit check in night, we welcome you to stop by the 4-H Building office on Thursday, July 14 or Friday, July 15 (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) to pick up your fair passes and your exhibit tags that will be generated by the FairEntry system. This is why your completing the FairEntry process is crucial, it will ensure that we have clearly printed exhibit tags for all exhibits and will allow you the opportunity to pick them up early so you can have your exhibit tagged and ready for Monday night check in. Following are some key details in regard to this process: Complete your fair entry by May 31st to be entered into a drawing for early bird prizes. Winners will be posted on our website on June 1st at Instructions for completing this process can be found at If you know what your exhibit will be, please include a detailed description in FairEntry. When selecting department, division, and class please note that there are several options so you need to be careful when entering. (See Exhibit Section document on the website.) If you are not sure you will be completing your exhibit, complete fair entry anyway so that we are ready to accept your exhibit if you do complete it. For projects in which you can have multiple exhibits (i.e., Floriculture, Foods, Photography) please be sure to include any that you might possibly be exhibiting. We would rather have too many exhibit tags for you than not enough.
