Making the Most of 4-H When your 4-H Project Superintendents and Club Leaders take their time to organize a meeting, activity, or workshop for you, you should make the time to attend! By fully participating in the 4-H program you ll have fun, learn new things, and build great memories! If you are unable to attend a workshop, don t hesitate to contact the project superintendent to learn what you missed! Read Your 4-H Mail! If you see either of the following logos on a piece of mail, odds are it s from the 4-H staff at the Extension Office. Our staff spends countless hours compiling and stuffing your 4-H mailings. Why do we spend our time doing this? To help you have a great 4-H experience! By making an effort to read all your 4-H mail (as well as your project materials, handbook, and any mail sent directly to you from your club leaders or superintendents), you will be fully aware of project updates, requirements, and timelines. By knowing and understanding what s going on in the 4-H program, you increase your chances for success! Missed Deadlines=Consequences A life lesson that is taught through our 4-H program is that deadlines are deadlines. When you miss a deadline, there are consequences. If For many animal project 4-Hers, an important deadline is May 15 th. Miss the deadline, and you won t be showing your animals at the fair. Be responsible for your 4-H paperwork so that I don t have to be the bearer of bad news! Sincerely, Joan Joan s Journal News for Volunteers Are you a Volunteer? Adults who routinely work with 4-H members in clubs, projects, etc. need to undergo the volunteer screening process, as is policy of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service and the Indiana 4-H Program. Questions? Contact Laura or Joan at the Extension Office at Volunteers: Please Plan Ahead If you use facilities at the fairgrounds for workshops/meetings/fundraisers of your project/club/committee, we encourage you to plan your dates ahead of time...perhaps even in the next month or two. Please contact Laura to schedule your 4-H events at the fairgrounds. 4-H Adult Leaders The 4-H Adult Leaders will meet on Tuesday, May 13th. The Executive Committee will meet at 6:30 pm and the general meeting will take place at 7:00 pm. Both meetings will be held at the Porter County Administration Building Room H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be on Tuesday, May 20th. The Executive Committee will meet at 6:30 pm and the general meeting will take place at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held in the 4-H Building. 4-H Project Superintendents Wondering who is in your project? Member lists are available upon request. Contact Laura. Check-out Keys for Fairgrounds With workshop season in full swing, the check-out sets of keys to the fairgrounds are at a premium. Please help other 4-H volunteers by returning keys promptly after your event. Due to the busy season, keys may not be available to you very far in advance of your activity. Don t hesitate to call ahead about availability of keys before you make a trip to the Extension Office to pick up keys.

2 News for Jr. Leaders Junior Leaders The next regular Junior Leaders meeting will be May 19th at 7:00 pm in the Expo East Upstairs. The Executive Committee will meet on May 28th at 7:00 pm in the Extension Office. Check the Junior Leader section of the county 4-H website for your most up-to-date Junior Leader news! Area Share-the-Fun Performing Arts Event The Area X 4-H Performing Arts Contest will be held on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m. at the Lakeview Middle School Auditorium in Warsaw. The school is located at 848 E. Smith St., Warsaw. Acts may check in starting at 1 p.m. READ YOUR 4-H PUBLICATIONS! Many of your 4-H questions can be answered by reading your 4-H Pandemonium newsletter, your Porter County 4-H Handbook and project materials, and checking out the website by clicking on 4-H Youth Development at STRICT DEADLINE ENFORCEMENT As you prepare for the H year, please remember that deadlines will be strictly enforced with a zero tolerance policy for lateness. Be sure you read your Pandemonium newsletter and project materials and adhere to all deadlines! LIVESTOCK MEMBERS: this will be particularly important to you, as missing livestock paperwork deadlines will result in NOT SHOWING AT THE COUNTY AND/OR STATE FAIRS. Project News Barbecue Workshop On Saturday, June 21st we will be holding a BBQ workshop from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the 4-H Building. We will practice grilling and answer any questions you have about the project - 4-H members as well as their families are encouraged to attend. Superintendents will provide plates, cups, plastic ware and drinks. Please bring items to grill and grilling equipment as well as a side dish or dessert to share. Questions please call Jeff Weitzel (219) Veterinary Science Workshops On Saturday, May 10th we will be holding a Veterinary Science workshop at 3 p.m. in the 4-H Building. We will discuss project requirements and what to exhibit. Additionally, we will be discussing sterile technique for small animal surgery. Questions please call Jeff Weitzel (219) On Saturday, June 21st we will be holding a Veterinary Science workshop from 3-4 p.m. in the 4-H Building. We will discuss project requirements and what to exhibit. Additionally, we will have a large animal demonstration. Questions please call Jeff Weitzel (219) Photography Workshops The next Porter County 4-H Photography Workshop will be held: May 10th from 1 to 3 p.m. It will be at my house. All photography members are encouraged to come. Parents are welcome. Beginner photography manuals have arrived. The main focus of this workshop is the composition of photos for a specific type of subject--such as portrait, landscape, still life, etc. May 31st, we will discuss lighting for your photographs--my house from 1 to 3 p.m. The four photo shoots in June are the 11th (9 to 11 a.m.), 12th (1 to 3 p.m. at Ogden Gardens), 16th (1 to 3 p.m.), and 17th (1 to 3 p.m.). I have a supply of the black foam core exhibit boards, and will have the plastic envelopes also. Mrs. Hewlett, Legos Workshops Attention Lego builders!!!! Workshops have been scheduled for Thursdays May 15 and June 12 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 21 at 9 a.m. in the 4-H building at the fairgrounds. Important!!! Read the handbook for rules for this project. If you do not meet the requirements for your level, your project will be lowered one grade. For example: There are to be NO modes of transportation exhibited in Level A. Read the note that states what are and are not moveable parts. This is a building project not a scene. People and flowers, etc. are permitted to enhance your project but are not the focus of it. On a 3 x 5 index card give a brief description of your exhibit. This card will be attached to your exhibit card when it is brought to the fair. Important... NO kits are allowed. Parts of kits may be used, but DO NOT build a kit. If you do, your grade will be lowered. Also, this is to be the 4-H member s work and not that of his/her parents or other family members/ friends. 3 Camp Fees Reduced for 2014!! 3 Days of FUN for $50!!! Thanks to the supporters who contributed during last fall s Porter County Give Day, we are able to slash the price of 4-H Camp this year! Though the actual cost per camper is approximately $110, the 4-H Council approved putting the Give Day funds to work reducing camp costs! Camp is a great experience and a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends from both LaPorte and Porter Counties! This year s camp will be held June 12th-14th, and sign-up forms are now available at the Extension Office and on the Camp page of the Porter County 4-H website ( click on 4-H Youth Development, then Camp)! Campers will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Project News (continued) Farm & Lawn & Garden Tractor Workshop and Contest A driving workshop will be held on May 3rd from 10 am till 12 noon and the contest will also be May 3rd at 12 noon at Willow Pond Farm in Morgan Township. Please remember that as a member to be able to drive in the contest you have to make at least 2 workshops. If you have any questions you can contact Jim Metzger at , Marv King at , Brad King at , Chris Metzger at , Brad Metzger at Sewing Workshops May 17, First year grade 3 10:00 12:00 Expo Center East Upstairs: We will be learning about the sewing machine and practice threadless sewing. After earning your sewing license we will be sewing a small item just for you to take home. Please bring thread, any color, straight pins, seam ripper, small scissors to cut threads and a sewing machine. Please put all the small items in a box to keep them together. This is a good time to start your own sewing kit. If you do not have a portable sewing machine, please let me know and I will bring one. May 17, 2014 Second year grade 4 12:30-2:30 Expo Center East Upstairs All other junior division sewing members are invited to attend this workshop also. We will be learning how to install a zipper and make a fun project for you to take home in the process. Please bring thread, any color, straight pins, small scissors to cut threads, seam ripper, 1/2 inch clear scotch tape, a zipper foot and a sewing machine. Don t forget to put all of your small items in a box to keep them together. If you do not have a portable sewing machine please let me know and I will bring one. May 31, First year grade 3 Sewing Camp 10:00 2:30 Expo Center East Upstairs: This workshop will be for all first year members who would like to sew and finish their project all in one day. Bring your fabric, elastic if needed for your project, thread, shears, sewing gauge, seam ripper, straight pins, small scissors to cut threads and a sewing machine. Also bring a sack lunch. (Livestock enrollment forms will be due on May 9th/10th at the fairgrounds for exhibitors of dairy feeder steers, goats, and sheep!) County deadlines printed within the packet of materials must be met regardless of dates printed on state forms! Deadlines will be strictly enforced with a zero tolerance policy for lateness! Missing the deadline will result in NOT SHOWING at the county and/or state fairs. ONLINE Animal Enrollment for Some Species Last year, an online enrollment process was implemented for Llamas, Goats, and Horse & Pony, and will continue this year. In addition to the county enrollment forms, IF YOU HAVE INTEREST IN PARTICIPATING IN THE STATE FAIR, you ll need to complete an online enrollment process too. Goat Enrollment Day - NEW DATE/TIME for 2014! Goat enrollment day (ear tagging, weighing, retinal imaging) will be FRIDAY May 9 th from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm in the Swine Barn. 4 More Animal Project News Dairy Feeder Steer Enrollment Day Weigh-in and retinal imaging will take place on Saturday, May 10 th at 11:00 a.m. near the Poultry Barn. YOUR ENROLLMENT FORM WILL BE DUE AT THE FAIRGROUNDS ON THAT DATE! If you have any questions, contact Superintendent Dean Morrow at Swine Project Requirement Pork Quality Assurance ALL 4-H SWINE MEMBERS WILL BE REQUIRED to be certified in the National Pork Board Board s Youth PQA Plus (Pork Quality Assurance) Program! If you are not certified, you will not be able to participate in the Celebration Sale, as the processors will not accept your animals. New for this year: Youth PQA+ is now an at-home online certification process! More information was mailed to you along with your Swine enrollment form. Livestock Premise Identification Since September 1, 2006, all sites in Indiana associated with livestock must have a registered premise ID number. This includes 4-H exhibition animals. Livestock included in the state s plan are cattle, swine, sheep, goats and captive bison, deer and elk. Horse and poultry premises may voluntarily register. For more information, contact the Indiana State Board of Animal Health at or go on-line to Sheep & Goat Workshop We will be having a workshop for both Sheep and Goat members on May 18th at 1:00 pm at Tom Stoner's farm, 148 North 450 East in Valparaiso. A Purina Nutritionist, who is also a livestock judge, will be discussing feed programs as well as helping to perfecting our showmanship techniques. And we hope to answer any other questions. Hope to see everyone there. Sheep Superintendent, Troy Haman Lisa Bloom Memorial Scholarship for 4-H Beef Members Thanks to the generosity of friends and family of Lisa Bloom, a 4-H scholarship has been established in her memory. 4-H Beef project members who are seniors in high school and are in at least their fifth year in the Beef project will be eligible. Applications will be mailed to eligible 4-Hers in the June stall form mailing. Applications will be due back at the same time as stall forms, by June 30th. Dog Project Announcements Vaccination forms can be found at the state website Please print out, complete and have your vet sign this form before coming to the workshops with your dogs. No dog will be admitted into the building without an official 4-H vaccination form signed by your vet. First year dog project members should report at 6:00 pm 1B dog project members report at 7:00 pm and 2A and above should report at 7:45 pm in the Cattle Barn at the fairgrounds. We will be meeting for workshops every Tuesday until fair time. Attention Rabbit Project members We will be having our second rabbit workshop on Friday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Rabbit Barn. Again, we encourage first and second year members to attend to do the required handling demonstration of the rabbits and to ask any questions that you may have. Do not forget members, to list all rabbits that you own on your 4-H Rabbit enrollment form that is due by May 15 in the Extension Office. Any rabbits not listed or product of rabbits listed on the enrollment form may not be shown at the fair. Anyone with rabbits needing to be tattooed need to contact Scott at (219) or Janice at (219) to make arrangements to get it done. RELAY FOR LIFE: Greater Valparaiso Relay for Life will be held at TJMS on May (4pm-7am). Our Junior Leaders will be there representing Porter County 4-H, and we d love to have you JOIN OUR TEAM! Please support the work of the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. Here s a link to our 4-H team page, where you can join the team and set up a personal page and begin your own fundraising campaign, if you d like: Also, there will be a KISS THE PIG contest to raise funds for Relay. Voting containers will be available at the Extension Office and some area businesses, where $1 buys your vote for who you want to kiss the pig at 7pm on May 17th at Relay. This year s candidates include: Mike The Mullet Man Summers from 105.5, Dave Good from the Porter Co. Fair Board, and our very own 4-H Extension Educator Joan Grott! Read your Project Manuals, read your Porter County 4-H Handbook, and read this newsletter thoroughly! Know the general 4-H requirements, know your project requirements, and know important 4-H dates. The 4-H Program has provided you with the information, it is your responsibility to read and understand it.

CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by President Matt Wellsand at the 4-H Building. PLEDGES: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jack Rust and the 4-H Pledge was led by Brooke Sauter. AGENDA APPROVAL: The agenda was reviewed by the membership. Katy Rust made a motion to accept the agenda. Sandi Russell seconded. Motion carried. MINUTES APPROVAL: The minutes from the January 21, H Council meeting were published in the March Pandemonium. Sandi Russell noted that the minutes should have stated under the Adult Leaders Extension Report that Angela McGlothlen will be added to the bank account and not was added. Annette Hansen made a motion to accept the corrected January minutes. Melinda Lynch seconded. Motion carried. TREASURER S REPORT: Randi Webber reported that a Treasurer address has been set up that can be used for corresponding; porterco4htreasurer@gmail.com. The budget was reviewed and an REMC donation was noted. Tabitha Spudic made a motion to accept the Treasurer s Report. Annette Hansen seconded. Motion carried EXTENSION REPORTS JUNIOR LEADERS: Ben Hough reported that the Junior Leaders are currently having a Pampered Chef fundraiser. (Sale ended on March 23). He also mentioned that committees were formed to discuss Share- the-fun and volunteering at a Men s Home/Nursing Home. ADULT LEADERS: Sandi Russell reported that they had a Fashion Show with Leader shirts to determine order. There was discussion regarding adding an additional signer on the checking account. AG SOCIETY: There was a meeting scheduled for March 20. Tickets for grandstand events at the fair went on sale. There was a discussion about a possible portable air conditioner unit for the 4-H Building. More information will be available at a later date. EXTENSION BOARD: Joan Grott reported the annual Tree Workshop will be on April 5. EXTENSION EDUCATOR: Joan Grott encouraged to shop at TSC for 4-H TSC days. A state 4-H booklet was available at the meeting and will be available at the Extension Office that shares data on 4-H. She also reminded that May 6 is Give Local Porter County for an opportunity for 4-H to raise funds through donations. She mentioned there have been discussions with the Junior Leaders about hosting a competitive 4-H 4 mile Hustle run as a health and wellness fundraiser for a kickoff to this year s fair. COMMITTEE REPORTS EXECUTIVE: Matt Wellsand reported that the committee met with Financial Advisor Greg Farrall prior to the meeting due to the election of new officers and the committee discussed the meeting format.

8 AWARDS: Joan Grott reported that Porter County 4-H Scholarship applications will be mailed out in the April and are due at the end of April. Interview dates are to be determined. BUDGET: No business to report. WAYS & MEANS: Geraniums Michelle Lesniewski reported that the Geranium Sale will be on Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10. Help is needed both days along with Thursday, May 8 for delivery. The order forms will be in the March and April Pandemonium and information was also given to Club Leaders. Clover Café No business to report. Wreaths No business to report. CONSTITUTION: No business to report. EXPANSION & REVIEW: No business to report. 4-H FOUNDATION: No business to report. MAKING THE BEST BETTER: Matt Wellsand led the discussion to see where the state of 4-H is in Porter County and brainstorm ideas to make it better for future years. FUNDRAISING: The current major fundraisers are Geranium Sales, Wreath Sales and Clover Café, which proceeds are used for capital projects. Ideas mentioned in this category were investing in 4-H Building, improving 4-H Building, more accessible meeting space, expanding Clover Café to fairgrounds, investing in signage to direct people to Clover Café, food tent at Popcorn Fest, and classes for children through Fishing Superintendant. It was stated that while fundraising is important a major issue is getting volunteers to commit and follow through. PROMOTION & MARKETING: Matt Wellsand stated he would like to start a Promotions Committee. Ideas mentioned in this category were creating a 4-H display at the various county libraries, highlight the project of the year in Valpo Life magazine, 4-H pamphlets to be handed out in elementary, hold event night to draw in kids interested in 4-H, partner with Sunset Hill, present 4-H information to School Board since it has been difficult to promote 4-H within schools, hold contests at fair, reach out to Special Ed programs, and have club information available at fair with easy registration. RECOGNITION & AWARDS: Ideas mentioned in this category was highlighting a club of the month, 4-H member(s) of the month, leadership and officers, holding 10-year breakfast recognition. New awards were mentioned; vouchers for laptops, scholarships, 4-H letterman jacket, 4-H rings, awards through 4-H catalog, and Valpo Chamber gift certificates. Top Seller awards were mentioned for Geranium and Wreath Sale fundraisers along with having a Champion Row of the 4-H Building exhibits and placing ribbons on the projects instead of stickers. There was a signup sheet available for a variety of committees. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Randi Webber and Joan Grott reported they are still looking into buying a new laptop.
