PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Spring may seem to be taking its own sweet time coming this year but 4-H is off to a great start for 2013, judging by the press reports I have been seeing! The club Press reporters are doing an excellent job sharing their 4-H activities. Welcome to any and all new 4-H members and welcome back to returning members. Rally Night in February was energizing kick off for the H season. Thank you to the committee you did a great job organizing games and activities and the registration line never seemed to be a problem good work! Also thank you to Matt Hill from 4-H Ontario for coming to do some leader training before Rally Night and staying to help with the program. New members/parents of new members if you did not get a copy of the Leadership in Action magazine contact Janet Campbell we have quite a few copies available. This booklet gives you a wealth of information about 4-H Ontario and the 4-H program and opportunities beyond the county level marks an important year for 4-H in Ontario. The 4-H Ontario office recently moved to a new home in Rockwood. For anyone that has visited the 4-H office in the past, this will be a significant improvement. For the past 10 years or so, the 4-H office has been situated in the basement at the Gencor office. Unfortunately, new construction at the Gencor facility made the location less efficient. However, just as our children grow up and need to have a place of their own, the new 4-H location offers a bright, spacious home for 4-H with good accessibility as required by new laws. Check it out if you are ever through Rockwood. This year also marks the 100 th Anniversary of 4- H in Canada. Watch the website at for updates on the national anniversary celebrations. There will be activities all over Ontario. Have a great spring with 4-H! Congratulations to Molly Sayers, Emily Marchand and Alexandra Materson Foster, whose parents will be receiving refund checks for the membership that they had paid at Rally Night. Congratulations! 4 MARCH / APRIL 2013 Farm Olympics Competition A Farm Olympics competition was organized at the Spring Expo, a team consisted of 3 members from the same county. Chatham-Kent entered one team consisting of Ethan Dieleman, Bailey Pool and Maurice Verstraete. Congratulations for completing the obstacle course with the fastest time! l-r - Maurice Verstraete, Amy Lidster, Brad Regts C-K 4-H CLUB NEWS Chatham-Kent Poultry Club Meeting Farm Olympics Champions Maurice Verstrate, Bailey Pool, Ethan Dieleman Beef Fitting Competition New this year at Spring Expo was a beef and dairy fitting competition on Thursday evening. Chatham-Kent entered two teams in the beef fitting competition. One of the participants must be a Ridgetown Campus student with the other two participants being 4-H members. Five teams in total were entered in the beef competition. Although neither team placed, everyone had fun. Walk on the Wild Side The first meeting for the Club will take place on Sunday, April 14th from 1-5 pm at Dawne Mudford s farm located at 8420 Starkweather Line, just outside of Tupperville. This year there are some interesting outings planned, including bluebird nest box monitoring, snake hibernacula, purple martin and hummingbird bird banding projects, turtle monitoring on the Sydenham River, and of course geocaching with leaders Dawne and Dennis Carnegie.The second meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 20th from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm and will involve a Geocaching CITO event, involving a Thames River clean-up. MARCH / APRIL 2013 North Kent Horse & Pony Club The NKH&P Club has been meeting since January, and is just winding down from the first project of Enthusiastic members have learned lots about safety and horse care, as well as showmanship at halter. We will be having a second project (Housing and Tack for horses) that will start in June. Meetings will be held on Tuesday evenings at Stellar Mount Stables, just north of Wallaceburg. Leaders: Jennifer Vandendool, Dawne Mudford, Lori Lefler and Nancy VanDaele. Members do not need to own a horse for this Club. This is not a riding club, but more of a horse-lovers club intended for kids to learn about horses, with hands-on experience. Horses are provided by Stellar Mount Stables. 6 MARCH / APRIL 2013 Canoe & Kayak Club The first official meeting of the Canoe & Kayak Club will take place on Thursday, May 16th at 5:30 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall (new location for this meeting) in Wallaceburg, at the corner of Murray Street and Baseline Road, where we will enjoy a hotdogs and refreshments. Members must bring their lifejacket to this meeting so that we can determine if it is properly fitted. This is a MANDATORY MEETING that involves a required safety seminar. At this meeting we will be handing out the schedule of paddles for the season, as well as details about our annual camping trip. Boats & paddles are supplied for members. There is a non-refundable $10 per member equipment maintenance fee for this club. Leaders for this Club are: Dennis Carnegie, Marc Jacques and Dawne Mudford. The CK 4-H Association is still looking for your pop cans. Drop off all cans at Jim Winters, Scane Road, Kent Bridge or any 4-H director. Foodland Grocery Tapes are also a great fundraiser for the CK 4-H Association. Participating stores are Bothwell, Dresden, Ridgetown and Tilbury. Please save these grocery tapes and give them to Marg Nauta, A.D. Shadd Road, Merlin or any 4-H director. 100 Years of 4-H in Canada Since it began in Canada in 1913, 4-H has helped more than 2 million young people learn skills, make friends and have fun!! 6
