2 NATIONAL RANCH AND STOCK HORSE ALLIANCE 2018 GUIDELINES These rules becme effective January 1, 2018, fr the cnduct f the Natinal Ranch and Stck Hrse Alliance Natinal Champinship Shw. The NRSHA Shw will be held at the Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahma n June 13-17, N fficial AQHA/NRSHA pints will be earned by participatin in the NRSHA Shw; hwever, any placings in the tp five will be recgnized n the permanent recrd f the hrse. Qualificatin requirements were t be determined by each Alliance member AQHA, Western States VRH Assciatin, Stck Hrse f Texas, Oklahma Stck Hrse Assciatin, Natinal VRH Assciatin and the East Cast Stck Hrse Assciatin. Classes will be held cncurrently with AQHA VRH Wrld Shw classes, except fr cnfrmatin. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW RULES The NRSHA Natinal Champinship Shw will be cnducted under AQHA Versatility Ranch Hrse rules, with a few exceptins: All Arund calculatin and eligibility Additin f the Nvice divisin (Nvice eligibility and class rules have sme mdificatins which are listed belw) Ranch Cnfrmatin is nt an NRSHA class All equipment and attire rules will fllw AQHA Versatility Ranch Hrse rules ENTRY Entry may be made upn cmpleting and returning, alng with fees, t AQHA, Attn: Kim Gerge, 1600 Quarter Hrse Drive, Amarill, TX with receipt n later than April 20, 2018 REFUNDS A full refund will nly be given if requested prir t the entry deadline. A partial refund may be cnsidered if a hrse becmes severely injured, disabled r deceased, but nly if requested a minimum f tw weeks prir t the start f cmpetitin. Dcumentatin frm an AAEP-apprved veterinarian stating the severity f the debilitating injury r illness is required. Stall, drug, bstacle and entry fees will be refunded; hwever, ffice fees and cattle charges will be nt be refunded. Illness, accidents r ther incidents cncerning peple will nt be eligible fr refund. ALL-AROUND The title f All-Arund will be named in the Open, Amateur, Limited Amateur, Nvice Amateur, Yuth, Limited Yuth, and Nvice Yuth divisins. T be eligible fr pints fr the all-arund title, ne hrse/ne rider must enter and shw in ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch reining and at least ne cattle class (ranch cw wrk and/r ranch cutting). If they enter bth cattle classes, pints earned frm bth will cunt tward the all arund. In rder t cmpile all-arund pints, all hrses must be placed in each class. If there are ties in the final placing fr the all-arund, they will be brken by the highest placing hrse in the ranch cw wrk class, limited r nvice ranch cw wrk class, whichever is applicable t the divisin. If this des nt break the tie, ther classes will be used in the fllwing rder: ranch cutting, ranch reining, ranch trail, ranch riding.

3 EQUIPMENT/APPEARANCE OF HORSE N hrses less than 3 years f age may be exhibited. N hf plish. N braided r banded manes/tails r tail extensins. Trimming inside ears is discuraged. Trimming bridle path is allwed, als trimming f fetlcks r excessive (lng) facial hair. Equipment with excessive silver shuld nt cunt ver a gd wrking utfit. Excessive silver n bridles and saddles is discuraged. Hlding the saddle hrn with either hand will nt be penalized in any class. Psting at the extended trt is acceptable. Rmal reins are allwed in all classes, including Ranch Cutting. When riding with a rmal, a get dwn rpe may be used. A get dwn rpe is defined as a small rpe tied arund the neck f the hrse with a bwline r ther nn-slip knt and run back t the rider r tied t the saddle. The get dwn will be used t lead, grund tie, r tie the hrse. The use f tw-rein equipment is nly allwed in Ranch Reining and Ranch Cw Wrk. SCORING SYSTEM The scring system is designed t be psitive, straightfrward, and always encurage grwth and imprvement in bth hrse and rider. The scring system is designed t give credit fr the wrk dne. Each hrse/rider team is scred between pints and autmatically begins the run with a scre f 70 pints. The hrse/rider team is scred n the quality f each maneuver (e.g., -1 1/2 extremely pr, -1 very pr, -1/2 pr, 0 crrect, +1/2 Gd, +1 very gd, +1 1/2 excellent). Plusses and minuses are a reflectin f the smthness, finesse, attitude, quickness and authrity f the hrse/rider team when perfrming the varius maneuvers. Penalties may be accrued fr incrrect maneuver executin. In each class, the entire class will be scred and placed. All exhibitrs in each class will be ranked accrding t scres, placed frm the highest t the lwest scres. In the case f a hrse/rider team being ff-pattern (OP), leaving wrking area befre pattern is cmplete, repeated blatant disbedience, the hrse/rider team cannt place abve ther hrse/rider teams wh have cmpleted the pattern crrectly. N hrse/rider team shall be disqualified except fr lameness, abuse, illegal equipment, disrespect r miscnduct, imprper western attire and r fall f hrse/rider. Disqualified hrses will cunt as entries in the class, but will nt receive pints. In the case f a fall by a hrse r rider, the run shall end when the rider r hrse fall t the grund. A hrse is cnsidered t have fallen when all fur feet are extended in the same directin. A rider is cnsidered t have fallen when the rider is n lnger astride. In the case f equipment failure that delays cmpetitin r becmes unsafe, the run is stpped and the hrse/rider team will be given credit fr what they have accmplished prir t that pint but cannt place abve ther hrse/rider teams wh have cmpleted the pattern crrectly and will be cnsidered ff-pattern (OP). In each class, specific maneuvers will be designated by the judge t be tiebreakers. The tie-breaker maneuvers will be made prir t the start f the class and s nted n scre sheets. These maneuvers will be ranked as first tie-breaker, secnd, third and s frth. Specific maneuvers will be selected by the judge prir t the class as tie-breaking maneuvers. These maneuvers will be ranked as first tie-breaker, secnd, third etc. At the ptin f shw management, when using tw judges t determine ne set f winners, the classes will first be placed under each judge and class placing pints awarded and psted. One judge shall be designated as the tie breaker judge befre judging begins. The cmpsite results (cmbined results used t determine an verall winner) shall be determined as fllws: All class placing pints will be added fr each judge t determine an all-arund winner. If there is a tie, the tie-breaker judge s class placing will determine the winner. Ties fr the all-arund winner are brken first using the highest placing in the ranch cw wrk class, r the limited ranch cw wrk class, whichever is applicable t the divisin.

4 RANCH RIDING The purpse f the ranch riding class is t measure the ability f the hrse t be a pleasure t ride while being used as a means f cnveyance frm perfrming ne ranch task t anther. The hrse shuld reflect the versatility, attitude and mvement f a wrking ranch hrse riding utside the cnfines f an arena. The hrse shuld be well-trained, relaxed, quiet, sft and cadenced at all gaits. The ideal ranch hrse will travel with frward mvement and demnstrate an bvius lengthening f stride at extended gaits. The hrse can be ridden with light cntact r n a relatively lse rein withut requiring undue restraint, but nt shwn n a full drape f reins. The verall manners and respnsiveness f the ranch riding hrse t make timely transitins in a smth and crrect manner, as well as the quality f the mvement are f primary cnsideratins. The ideal ranch riding hrse shuld have a natural ranch hrse appearance frm head t tail in each maneuver. Hrses shall be shwn individually and the class may be cnducted inside r utside f an arena. The pattern may be started either t the right r left directin. Shw management has the ptin t set markers t designate gait changes. If the class is held inside an arena, the curse shall be set up t make apprximately ne pass f the arena in each directin. The ptinal ranch riding pattern may be used r anther pattern may be used as lng as all elements f the class are fulfilled as fllws: Hrses will be shwn individually at three gaits; walk, trt and lpe in each directin f the arena. Hrses will als be asked t reverse, stp and back. The judge must ask fr an extended trt and extended lpe at least ne directin f the ring. Part f the evaluatin f this class is n smthness f transitins. A hrse may be cllected frm the extended trt as the hrse mves int the lpe. The transitin frm the extended lpe dwn t the trt is a transitin t the seated trt nt the extended trt. Therefre, an extra cue t achieve this gait is expected. Hrses that cmplete this ttal transitin within three strides calmly and bediently shuld be rewarded. Hrses that attempt t stp r d stp prir t trtting will be penalized. Judges expect t see hrses that have been trained t respnd t cues. T see these cues applied discretely and the hrse respnding crrectly culd be a credit-earning situatin. Penalties will be assessed as fllws: 1 Pint: Over-bridled (per maneuver), ut f frame (per maneuver), t slw, gaping muth, break f gait at walk r trt fr tw (2) strides r less. 3 Pints: Wrng lead r ut f lead, draped reins, break f gait at lpe, break f gait at walk r trt fr mre than tw (2) strides. 5 Pints: Spurring in frnt f cinch, blatant disbedience, use f either hand t instill fear/praise, use f tw hands per maneuver, 1st r 2nd cumulative refusal, mre than ne finger between split reins r any fingers between rmal reins per maneuver. 10 pints: Unnatural ranch hrse appearance (Hrse s tail is bvius and cnsistently carried in an unnatural manner in every maneuver) Off-Pattern (OP): Breaking pattern, leaving wrking area befre pattern is cmplete, repeated disbedience. Cannt place abve thers wh cmplete pattern crrectly. Disqualificatin (DQ): Lameness, abuse, illegal equipment, disrespect r miscnduct, imprper western attire, fall f hrse/rider. RANCH TRAIL The ranch trail class shuld test the hrse s ability t cpe with situatins encuntered while being ridden thrugh a pattern f bstacles generally fund during the curse f everyday ranch wrk. The hrse/rider team is judged n the crrectness, efficiency and pattern accuracy with which the bstacles are negtiated and the attitude and mannerisms exhibited by the hrse. Judging emphasis is n identifying the well brke, respnsive and well-mannered hrse that can crrectly navigate and negtiate the curse. The ideal ranch trail hrse shuld have a natural ranch hrse appearance frm head t tail in each maneuver. The ranch trail curse will include n less than six and n mre than nine bstacles.

5 It is mandatry that the hrse be asked t walk, trt and lpe during the curse. Walk can be part f bstacle scre r be scred with the appraching bstacle. Trt must be at least 35 feet and scre with appraching bstacle. Lpe must be lead-specific, at least 50 feet and scre with appraching bstacle. Care must be exercised t avid setting up any bstacles that may be hazardus t the hrse r rider. When setting curses, management will be mindful that the idea is nt t trap a hrse/rider team r eliminate it by making an bstacle t difficult. All curses and bstacles are t be cnstructed with safety in mind s as t reduce the risk fr accidents. Shw cmmittee shall have the ptin f setting up the trail curse t best fit the arena cnditins. An utdr curse is recmmended if apprpriate terrain is available. Each single perfrmance event can be time cnsuming, especially with large classes, s it is imperative that time restrictins are placed n this class. The shw cmmittee, either thrugh a pilt run r estimatin, shall select a curse that has a cntinuus and psitive flw that can be negtiated in fur minutes r less. Judges must walk the curse and have the right and duty t alter the curse if it is nt in keeping with the intent f the class. Judges may remve r change any bstacles they deem unsafe, nn-negtiable r unnecessarily difficult. Any time a trail bstacle becmes unsafe during a class, it shall be repaired r remved frm the curse. If the curse cannt be repaired and sme hrses have cmpleted the curse, the scre fr that bstacle shall be deducted frm all previus draws in that class. The curse must be designed using the mandatry bstacles and maneuvers plus ptinal bstacles. Cmbining tw r mre f the bstacles is acceptable. PROHIBITED OBSTACLES: Tarps, water bstacles with slick bttms, PVC pipe used as a jump r walkver, tires, rcking r mving bridges, lgs elevated in a manner that permits such t rll in a dangerus manner. MANDATORY OBSTACLES AND/OR MANUEVERS: 1. Ride ver bstacles n the grund (usually lgs). Walk, trt r lpe may be used but nly ne gait is required. Walk-vers: Walk ver n mre than five lgs n mre than 10 inches high and spacing between inches. The frmatin may be straight, curved, zigzagged r raised. Trt-vers: Trt ver n mre than five lgs n mre than 10 inches high. The space between lgs r ples shuld be inches. The frmatin can als be straight, curved, zigzagged r raised. Lpe-vers: Lpe ver n mre than five lgs n mre than 10 inches high. The space between lgs shuld be 6 t 7 feet. The frmatin can als be straight, curved, zigzagged r raised. 2. Opening, passing thrugh and clsing gate: Use gate that will nt endanger hrse r rider and requires minimum side-passing 3. Ride ver wden bridge: Bridge shuld be sturdy, safe and negtiated at a walk nly. Heavy plywd lying flat n the grund is an acceptable simulatin f a bridge. Suggested minimum width shall be 36 inches wide and at least 6 feet lng. 4. Backing bstacles: Backing bstacles are t be spaced at a minimum f 28 inches. If elevated, 30 inch spacing is required. Back thrugh and arund at least three makers. Back thrugh L, V, U r straight r similarly shaped curse which may be elevated n mre than 24 inches. 5. Side-pass bstacle: Any bject which is safe and f any length may be used t demnstrate respnsiveness f the hrse t leg signals. Raised side pass bstacles shuld nt exceed 12 inches. 6. Drag an bject: Fr pen and amateur classes ONLY. The drag is nt t be used in yuth, nvice amateur r nvice yuth classes. Drag may be a cmplete figure eight and may begin in either directin. The exhibitr must have the rpe dallied n the saddle hrn (half r full dally) fr the duratin f the drag.

6 OPTIONAL OBSTACLES. Optinal bstacles may be used prvided the bstacles can be fund in everyday ranch wrk. Optinal bstacles frm which selectins can be made include, but are nt limited t: A jump bstacle whse center height is nt less than 14 inches high r mre that 25 inches high. Hlding the saddle hrn is permissible fr this bstacle. Only live r stuffed animals which wuld nrmally be encuntered in an utdr setting may be used but nt t be used in an attempt t spk a hrse. Carry bject frm ne part f the arena t anther. Remve and replace materials frm a mailbx. Trt thrugh cnes spaced a minimum f 6 feet apart. Crss natural ditches r ride up embankments. Swing rpe r thrw rpe at a dummy steer head. Step in and ut f bstacle. Put n slicker r cat. Stand t munt with munting blck. Walk thrugh water bstacle. Open gate n ft. Pick up feet. Walk thrugh brush. Grund tie. (Hbbles are allwed) Lead at the trt. At shw management s ptin, the cmpetitin trail curse may be made available t exhibitrs r psted prir t the day f cmpetitin. It must be psted at least ne hur prir t cmpetitin. Printed handuts fr exhibitrs are helpful and encuraged. CREDITS AND PENALTIES. All runs begin upn entering the pen and any infractins are subject t penalty at that time (such as tw hands n the reins, using either hand t instill fear r praise, etc.). The rider has the ptin f eliminating any bstacle, hwever this will result in being ff pattern (OP) and the hrse/rider team may nt place abve thers wh have cmpleted the pattern crrectly. A judge may ask a hrse t pass n an bstacle after three refusals r at any time fr safety cncerns. Credit is given t hrse/rider teams wh negtiate the bstacles crrectly and efficiently. Hrses shuld receive credit fr shwing attentiveness t bstacles and ability t negtiate thrugh the curse when the bstacles warrant it while willingly respnding t rider s cues n mre difficult bstacles. Quality f mvement and cadence shuld be cnsidered part f the maneuver scre fr the bstacle. 7 RANCH REINING The ranch reining class measures the ability f the ranch hrse t perfrm basic handling maneuvers with a natural head carriage in a frward lking manner. The ideal ranch reining hrse shuld have a natural ranch hrse appearance frm head t tail in each maneuver. Patterns may be chsen frm any f the ranch reining patterns r apprved by the shw management and judge. CREDITS AND PENALTIES. All runs begin upn entering the pen and any infractins are subject t penalty at that time such as tw hands n the reins, using either hand t instill fear r praise, etc. T rein a hrse is nt nly t guide him but als t cntrl his every mvement. The best reined hrse shuld be willingly guided r cntrlled with little r n apparent resistance and dictated t cmpletely. Any mvement n his wn must be cnsidered a lack f cntrl. All deviatins frm the exact written pattern must be cnsidered a lack f r temprary lss f cntrl and therefre a fault that must be marked dwn accrding t severity f deviatin. The hrse/rider team s verall perfrmance shuld be credited fr smthness, finesse, attitude, quickness and authrity f perfrming varius maneuvers while using cntrlled speed which raises the degree f difficulty and makes the hrse/rider team mre exciting and pleasing t watch. PENALTIES: One-half (1/2) Penalties: Starting a circle r exiting a rll-back at a trt fr up t tw (2) strides; delayed change f lead by ne stride where the lead change is required by the pattern descriptin; failure t remain a minimum f twenty feet frm the wall r fence when appraching a stp and/r rll-back; ver-spin r underspin up t 1/8 turn. 1 Pint Penalties: Over-bridled (per maneuver), ut f frame (per maneuver), ut f lead in the circles, figure eights r arund the end f the arena (this penalty is cumulative and will be deducted fr each quarter f a circle the hrse is ut f lead); Over r under spinning 1/8 t ¼ turn. Slipping rein. 2 Pint Penalties: Break f gait; freeze up in spins r rll-backs; failure t stp r walk befre executing a lpe departure n trt-in patterns; failure t be in a lpe prir t the first marker n run-in patterns; failure t cmpletely pass the specified marker befre initiating a stp psitin, trtting beynd tw strides, but less than 1/2 circle r 1/2 length f the arena. 5 Pint Penalties: Spurring in frnt f cinch; blatant dis-bedience; use f either hand t instill fear/praise; use f tw hands per maneuver; mre than ne finger between split reins r any fingers between rmal reins per maneuver (except tw rein). Excess rein may be straightened anytime during the pattern, prvided the rider s free hand remains behind the rein hand. Any attempt t alter tensin r length f the reins frm the bridle t the rein hand is cnsidered use f tw hands and a 5 pint penalty will be applied. 10 pint: Unnatural ranch hrse appearance (Hrse s tail is bvius and cnsistently carried in an unnatural manner in every maneuver) Off-Pattern (OP): breaking pattern; inclusin f maneuver (e.g. ver r under-spinning, backing mre than tw (2) strides, etc.); leaving arena befre pattern is cmplete; repeated blatant disbedience; Exhibitrs cannt place abve thers wh cmplete the pattern crrectly. Disqualificatin (DQ): Lameness; abuse; illegal equipment; disrespect r miscnduct; imprper western attire; fall f hrse/rider. RANCH COW WORK The ideal ranch hrse must als be a cw hrse and this class demnstrates and measures the hrse s ability t d cw wrk. In additin the ideal ranch cw hrse shuld have a natural ranch hrse appearance frm head t tail in each maneuver. Hlding the saddle hrn is permitted. There is a time limit per hrse/rider team t perfrm the wrk depending n the divisin and the time begins when the cw is turned int the arena. If the time has nt elapsed and the judge is satisfied that all requirements f the class have been met, the judge shuld blw the whistle fr the exhibitr t cease wrk. The judge may blw a whistle at any time fr the exhibitr t cease wrk fr safety reasns. Judges will give credit fr what they have seen. Only the judge may award a new cw t a cntestant t replace a cw that will nt hnr a hrse. If the judge awards a new cw, the exhibitr has the ptin t refuse the new cw by cntinuing t wrk. If the exhibitr accepts the new cw, the time fr wrking the cw will start ver. If the exhibitr intends t accept the new cw, the exhibitr must pull up immediately. When multiple judges are scring, any ne f the judges may terminate the wrk r signal fr a new cw. OPEN, AMATEUR, YOUTH COW WORK CONTENT. Exhibitrs in the pen, amateur and yuth divisins are alltted three minutes t cmplete the wrk. When there is ne minute left, the annuncer will annunce, ne minute remaining. At three minutes, the annuncer will call fr time. There are three parts t the class: bxing, fence wrk and rping r circling. Part One Bxing the Cw: The rider shall ride int the arena, face the cattle entry gate and signal fr their cw t be turned int the arena. The cw shall be cntrlled n the entry end f the arena fr a sufficient amunt f time t demnstrate the hrse s ability t hld the cw. If the cw des nt immediately challenge the hrse, the rider shall aggressively mve in n the cw t demnstrate his hrse s ability t drive and blck the cw n the entry fence.

8 Part Tw Fence Wrk: After the cw has been cntrlled n the entry end f the arena, the rider shall set the cw up and drive it dwn either side f the arena. The cw shuld be turned n the fence at least nce in each directin. The first run ut fr a turn shall be past the half-way mark f the arena. All turns dwn the side shall be cmpleted befre reaching the end fence. Part Three Rping r Circling: The amateur and yuth exhibitr has the ptin f circling the cw in the middle f the arena in bth directins in lieu f rping. An amateur r yuth exhibitr may circle r rpe the cw but cannt cmbine the tw t get credit fr this prtin f the run. Open and cwby exhibitrs must rpe the cw. T rpe the cw, the exhibitr must be carrying a rpe when the run starts. The exhibitr may pull up after the fence wrk, take dwn the rpe and prceed t rpe and stp the cw. In the rping prtin f the class, tw thrws are permitted and the hrse will be judged n tw maneuvers: tracking/rating and stpping the cw. It is nt necessary that the exhibitr catch t receive a scre in the rping prtin. The catch is legal as lng as the cw lks thrugh the lp and the rpe pulls tight n any part f the animal s bdy except the tail. The rpe may be tied n r dallied. If the exhibitr des nt catch, the hrse will be given credit fr tracking and rating and will be assessed the apprpriate penalty fr failure t catch. T circle the cw, the exhibitr will maneuver the cw smthly at least 360 degrees in each directin withut interference frm the fence. The circle s size, symmetry, speed and relative balance frm right and left shw cntrl. Tightening the circles dwn with fast head-t-head speed will be a credit situatin. The circles shuld be cmpleted befre the cw is exhausted. Once an exhibitr has cmmitted t circling a cw, if the cw falls n new cw will be awarded. The exhibitr will cmplete the run by riding arund the fallen cw t fulfill circling requirements. In the circling prtin f the judging, ne whistle will terminate the wrk and tw whistles will award a new cw. CREDITS AND PENALTIES. All runs begin upn entering the pen. Any infractins (such as tw hands n the reins, using either hand t instill fear r praise, etc.) are subject t penalty at that time. During Bxing, credit will be given fr the hrse s expressin and its cw sense (i.e., making mves with little rider assistance); hlding, cntrlling, and turning the cw; the amunt f wrk actually dne; and the degree f difficulty f the wrk. Credit will be given during Fence Wrk fr making the first run past the center f the arena; making turns right n the cw; and cntrlling a difficult cw. If Rping, credit will be given fr rating and fllwing cw t allw rider the ptimal rping psitin; stpping hard; and staying in the grund during the hld.
