Agus Farm, Arligto, Iowa, has bee hoored by the America Agus Associatio as a Historic Agus Herd. Arold Rueber kew exactly what he wated i 1963, ad he was t goig to settle o the baby beeves style of cattle that were too small to suit him. He kew his commercial market was sellig 1,200-poud (lb.) steers to the Chicago Stock Yards for the high-choice, low-prime market; ad he kew he eeded to fid cows ad bulls big eough to get that job doe. He evetually foud the size he eeded i 12 registered-agus bred heifers; six of which were Earl Marshall descedats. All 12 heifers cost Arold just more tha $3,000. Whe he bega lookig for a good-sized bull to put with them, Arold ra ito aother wall. Big bulls were hard to fid. By that time, Arold kew he could t be the oly perso searchig for size ad decided to eter the purebred rig ad supply the market with larger aimals. Just a few years later, i the late 1960s whe the type chage came, that decisio proved itself. From that poit forward, Arold ad his two sos, Doug ad David, ejoyed great success i the showrig ad the auctio rig with their Agus cattle. Bulls such as Keyba Bardolier 179, Barbaria Jumbo 13Y, Old Tow Lacelot, Grassy View Marshall ad Ed Ree Black Echater gave A.D.D. Agus Farm a great foudatio to build upo, ad the herd grew to about 200 cows. I 1978, A.D.D. Agus Farm owed the Iowa Bull of the Year, GD Lightfoot 16. I the early 1980s the family took a hard look at the future of showig cattle, ad the farm decided to place less emphasis o the show circuit ad more o performace cattle. It was a easy trasitio to make for the family, sice performace had always bee importat. They also had kept official Agus Herd Improvemet Records (AHIR ) o their cattle sice the late 1960s. A.D.D. Agus Farm has embraced techology from the start. Begiig i the 1980s, ew bloodlies have etered through the use of artificial isemiatio (AI). The Ruebers were some of the first to use ultrasoud measures to improve carcass 46 ANGUSJoural Jauary 2015 quality. They quickly icorporated GeeStar to improve tederess, marblig ad feed efficiecy i their cattle; ad bega usig Igeity o their herd durig the program s ifacy. They kew expected progey differeces (EPDs) ehaced with geomic profiles improved accuracy ad added value to their cattle. Curretly, Doug ad Marcia Rueber maage more tha 100 head of cows. Their childre were very active i the regioal, state ad Natioal Juior Agus Associatio (NJAA). Daughter Laurie ad so Michael exhibited cattle at local, district, state, regioal ad atioal juior Agus shows. Laurie received a Agus Foudatio scholarship i 1998, the first year they were awarded. Radall Robbis, Woodbury Te., was hoored by Accelerated Geetics at its aual Presidet s Gala i Lake Geeva, Wis. Robbis received the Presidet s Oyx Award for his achievemets i sales ad service. He has bee a member of the Associatio sice Gardier Agus Rach, Ashlad, Ka., Shao Hall Cuttig Horses, Comache, Okla., ad Daube Cattle Co., Ardmore, Okla., partered to beefit the Workig Rach Cowboys Foudatio (WRCF) i support of efforts to fud scholarships ad provide assistace to those i eed. The parters offered Little Lida s Dually for sale at the Wester Bloodstock Sale Dec. 8-13, 2014, i Fort Worth, Texas. All proceeds from the sale were to be doated to the WRCF. The Workig Rach Cowboys Associatio (WRCA) was fouded i 1995 to promote rachig o a atioal level ad preserve the lifestyle of the rach cowboy. Preservig that lifestyle meas reachig out to those i eed durig difficult times. Aspirig doctors, veteriarias, teachers ad rach maagers of tomorrow ofte eed assistace. I 2001, WRCA formed the WRCF, a 501(c)(3) orgaizatio, hoored to help hard-workig cowboys ad their immediate family members. Each year, the WRCF awards scholarships ad assists umerous families through the Crisis Fud. The Gardiers have bee America Agus Associatio life members sice The Caadia Agus Associatio (CAA) has lauched Agus Cetral Televisio (ACTV), a video broadcast that will air four times per year ad will feature aythig related to its Agus activities ad beef idustry. Each episode will be offered o the CAA YouTube chael. The first episode was scheduled to air Dec. 12, Karla Ness, director of member egagemet, is the ewest member of the CAA team. She graduated from Mout Royal Uiversity with a bachelor of commuicatios degree with a major i public relatios. Oe of her mai roles is leadig the ew AC-TV iitiative. Watch for her at differet Agus evets as she will be capturig footage, iterviews ad pictures for AC-TV. The CAA itroduced 50- ad 75-year awards to recogize those breeders who have bee a member of the Associatio for 50 or 75 cosecutive years. The log dedicatio of these producers to the Agus breed is essetial to the overall success of the beef idustry. The recipiets of these awards were recogized at the Royal Agriculture Witer Fair i Toroto i November Earley Bros. from Otario was a recipiet for Earley Bros. was established i 1935 by Eugee Earley whe he started a Agus herd. The family farm, Hillcrest Farms at Kerwood, Ot., had bee established i the mid-1800s by his Irish acestors. Eugee s middle so, George, was a very successful showma. I 1978, Earley became presidet of the CAA. It proved to be a challegig period due to the fight to eforce blood-testig results. May registered-agus cattle were removed from the registry because of failed tests; however, i the ed, the itegrity of the Agus breed had bee esured. George Earley has bee iducted ito the Caadia Agricultural Hall of Fame, the Otario Agriculture Hall of Fame; amed Farmer of the Year i Middlesex Couty, received the Caadia Ceteial 125 Year Medal ad was amed Otario Producer of the Year. George ad wife Lyda have four childre, Mike, Martha, Tim ad Sara. Today, Mike maages Earley Bros., but all four Earley childre are ivolved i the busiess. Mike has maaged Earley Bros. for the last 25 years. The CAA hoored JSE Farms with the Easter Feedlot of the Year Award. Durig his spare time Sta became heavily ivolved i the Bruce Couty Cattleme s Associatio ad from there moved oto the Provicial, leadig the idustry through the Walkerto Water Crisis while presidet of the Otario Cattleme s Associatio. Sta was elected to the Caadia Cattleme s (CCA) board ad was sittig vice presidet i 2003 whe bovie spogiform ecephalopathy (BSE) closed Caadia borders, sedig the idustry ito a dowward spiral. Servig as presidet of the CCA i , Sta s easy way ad commosese approach helped rebuild the devastated idustry. After graduatig from the Uiversity of Guelph with his bachelor s i aimal sciece i 1991, Steve wet o to become a territory maager for Shur-Gai before comig home to the 9th Cocessio i 1994 to follow i his parets footsteps. Steve laid the groudwork for what would become JSE Farms. Like Sta, Steve is compelled to get ivolved i the beef idustry ad his commuity. Steve is actig as a director at the Bruce Couty Cattleme s, a director of the Caadia Cattle Idetificatio Agecy, the OMFRA Livestock Medicies Advisory Committee ad is curretly a director at Beef Farmers of Otario, sittig o the Govermet Relatios, Nomiatios, Otario Feeder Fiace, Feedlot ad Forage Isurace committees. The farm o the 9th Cocessio has grow through the years to 700 acres of mixed pasture, hay ad cash crop. The beef eterprise has grow to 850 head of cattle o site with additioal backgroudig beig doe i wester Caada. I 2013, it was Steve s tur to take o the buildig of a ew facility to replace the slatted-floor facility built by his father 39 years earlier. The CAA itroduced the Feedlot of the Year award four years ago to recogize feedlots that promote Agus to their customers ad that feed Caadia Agus Racher Edorsed tagged cattle. z IN PASSING Richard Dick Tokach, 82, Sait Athoy, N.D., died Nov. 9, 2014, at Saford Cotiuig Care Ceter i Mada, N.D. He grew up o the family farm that was homesteaded by his gradfather i 1898, ad he retured to the farm after attedig Mada High School ad North Dakota State Uiversity (NDSU). Dick married Teresa Elter Oct. 15, Together they created Tokach Agus Rach ad istilled the love of agriculture ito their family. Dick was proud whe his sos joied him as workig parters. Curretly, all of his childre ad gradchildre are ivolved i productio agriculture. Dick was a steward of the lad, caretaker of livestock ad a ma of itegrity. He believed i public service. He served i may areas of the livestock idustry, icludig the Natioal Cattleme s Associatio, the Natioal Beef Promotio ad Research Board, the Natioal Livestock ad Meat Board ad the North Dakota Beef Commissio. He had also served as presidet of the North Dakota Stockma s Associatio ad the North Dakota Agus Associatio. He had bee a life member of the America Agus Associatio sice Dick felt a duty to the commuity. He was 48 ANGUSJoural Jauary 2015 a Morto Couty Commissioer, North Dakota State Represetative, Mada School Board member, Morto Couty Fair Board member ad trustee of Sait Athoy Catholic Church. He was a member of the Spirit of Life Church, the Kights of Columbus, the Sait Athoy Verei ad may other orgaizatios. Dick was a recipiet of the North Dakota Stockma s Top Had Award ad the NDSU Saddle & Sirloi Agriculturalist of the Year. He was also hoored with the Beef Cattle Improvemet Award as Seedstock Producer of the Year, the Soil Coservatio Achievemet Award, the FFA Hoorary State Farmer s Award, ad the North Dakota Agus Associatio Ma of the Year Award. I 2013, Dick ad Theresa were iducted ito the North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame. Robert Elliott, 97, Cedar Hill, Te., died Nov. 18, Robert was bor i Robertso Couty, Te., Dec. 10, 1916, to William ad Mattie (Saba) Elliott. He was a farmer ad a member of Brewer s Chapel Uited Methodist Church. As a farmer he had a passio for makig the lad better each year. His achievemets ad service to others iclude servig as a magistrate i the Robertso Couty Court for 28 years. He was a logtime chairma of the Official Board at Brewer s Chapel Uited Methodist Church; a fouder of the Highlad Rim Agus Associatio; ad a board member of the Teessee Agus Associatio. George was a lifelog cattlema ad a early ad persistet advocate for Agus cattle. I 1946, he was appoited purebred beef herdsma at Kasas State Uiversity (K-State). For decades he cotiued a close relatioship with the uiversity ad its programs i agricultural sciece ad veteriary medicie. I 1950, he ad his wife moved to Olathe, Ka., where George was herdsma at the Blackpost Rach. Six years later they purchased the first parcel of what would be Shamrock Farms, their logtime home i the orther Flit Hills ear Wabausee. I a short time, their registered-agus cattle became fixtures at state, regioal ad atioal livestock shows. George was especially kow for takig his cattle by trai ad by tractor-trailer to atioal shows i Phoeix, Dever ad Dallas, ad was istrumetal locally i maagig 40 cosecutive aual Agus sales with Hammerlud Agus Farms. Shamrock Farms Agus cattle were familiar wiers at competitios i Illiois, Mississippi, Wyomig, Oklahoma, Missouri ad New Mexico. His awards icluded grad atioal champio steers at the Dever Stock Show i Shamrock Farms has bee a life member of the America Agus Associatio sice I ceremoies at K-State i 1993, he ad Jue became the first couple to be iducted ito the Stockma s Hall of Fame. Through the years, George garered coutless awards ad recogitios for his lad stewardship, herdsmaship ad commuity orgaizig. He geerously gave his time to Wabausee 4-H clubs, K-State athletics, couty towship boards, couty fair boards, the Wabausee School Board, Zeadale Commuity Church ad the Kasas State Foudatio Board. He coached local baseball teams ad metored youg Agus breeders. George was a member ad past presidet of the Kasas Agus Associatio (KAA). George ad Jue were kow for a traditio of geerosity at the dier table. Through the decades, eighbors were always welcome at Hallowee for Jue s fresh douts. For July 4, the family aually ivited the commuity for Agus burgers ad fireworks at Shamrock Hill, a summit that overlooked miles of the regio s rollig grasslad. For decades, George ad Jue were kow to ope their home to Fellowship of Christia Athletes ad coaches ad players of all K-State sports, especially those far from their ow homes ad families. George also esured that his piece of the Flit Hills was available for Easter church services, political fudraisers ad family reuios. He thrived o the eergy of these social evets ad relished i sharig with others the lad he treasured. I additio to his wife, George is survived by daughters Rebecca, Christy ad Nacy; so Roy; brother Eldo; ad graddaughters Valeri, Julia ad Coye.
