We have some exciting news to share of the County Food Show and Food Challenge participants in Sam's Spot so make sure you read it. Liberty County has a New Livestock Mentor, Chance Ward, for families that have projects in goat and lambs and are just starting those projects. Our Adult Leaders will be starting a new year with new ways to help the 4-H program, so look for upcoming dates for leaders and parents to attend those. Also, this is the first of many non-paper newsletters heading your way. We will no longer be sending newsletters in the mail unless you request one to be sent. Lots of "first" and "new" in 2010! I hope that you all had a good 2009 and wish you all the luck in 2010! Sam s Spot Hello, I hope you all had a very blessed Christmas season this year. This month I am going to tell you a little about my trip to camp on Oct. 30 and 31 st. I forgot to tell about it last month. I went to 4-H Jr.Leader lab between Huntsville and Cold Spring, at the Forest Glenn camp site. I took my friend Richard Twardowski with me and my Dad went as a chaperone. We had a lot of fun. It was only one night so it was very busy to get everything they had planned for us in one day. We learned about robotics. I had a good time and the camp was very nice. This year the Liberty county 4-H food show took place on Dec. 7 th. Audrey Brown competed and placed first in the Junior Main Dish category and Caleb Richardson competed and placed first in the Junior fruits and vegetable category. They will both be going to the District 9 food show in Jan. Lauren Daniel and Rebecca Daniel competed in the Edible Art contest and Lauren Daniel received Best of Show award with her bunny rabbits. The 4-H Food Challenge Clinic for Liberty and Chambers County took place on December 15 th, Three teams of 3-5 members from Liberty County participated in the challenge and prepared and presented a dish they created together. The senior team consisted of Emmaline Haught, Nathaniel Haught, and Scarlett Addington. The two Junior intermediate teams consisted of Sam Addington, Averey Merrell, Emma Merrell, Celia Merrell, and Owen Merrell. The other Junior team consisted of Caleb Richardson, Bobbie Turner, and Hannah Duty. Young people can be found sketching designs on scratch pieces of paper or keeping design journals. Many of our members have ferocious fashion ideas as well as artistic talent and have a gifted eye for design. This movement has provided us an opportunity to update the current 4-H Fabric and Fashion design contest to relate more closely with what is done in college fashion design programs and industry wide. The result is the 4-H Fashion Storyboard Contest. The Fashion Storyboard is a version of the presentation boards that are used in the fashion industry for selling and communicating ideas. The purpose of the Fashion Storyboard Contest is to give 4-H members an opportunity to create illustrations of their original design and display their work in a The road goes on forever... And 4-H never ends! More info in upcoming newsletters! storyboard format, similar to that used in the fashion industry. Through project work, the 4-H member has the opportunity to gain knowledge of the career responsibilities of a fashion designer and illustrator, enhance creativity and originality and develop visual communication skills. The 2011 Texas 4-H Roundup will host the inaugural Fashion Storyboard contest. The Fashion Storyboard contest will take the place of the current Fabric and Fashion Design contest. Actually, it s more of an updated version of the Fabric and Fashion Design contest focusing on the same objects. THE BEES ARE HERE FOR 2010! The 2010 Texas 4-H Beekeeping Essay rules and theme has been released to all counties. The 2010 essay theme is Is My Community Honey Bee-Friendly. The essay contest is sponsored on the national level by The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc. which awards $ to the first place winner, $ to second, and $ for third. On the state level, the Williamson and Collin Counties Beekeeping Associations help sponsor the contest with $ for first place, $75.00 for second, and $50.00 for third. Shooting, canoeing, dancing, and MORE!!! Summer Camping Programs at the Texas 4-H Conference Center are designed to provide a unique residential camping opportunity for youth while enjoying the advantage of meeting other youth from across the State. There s a little something for everyone! Sessions can include: canoeing, swimming, the climbing wall or cargo net and zip line, drama, riflery, archery, arts and crafts, games, special events, theme parties and dress up nights, and more! 5 Page 5 The District 9 Photography contest will soon be here! Photos are displayed during District 9 4-H Roundup Date: Saturday, April 24, 2010 There are 3 classes: Color Black & White All Media. There are 8 Categories: People Animals Still Life Natural Landscape Plant/Flora Architectural Elements Special Effects/Creative Effects Theme You are limited to 4 Entries, 1 per category at a cost of $5.00 each when you pay online and register on 4-H Connect Important This year you will need to upload your entries to 4-H Connect as well. Be sure to allow yourself enough time for questions, in case you have problems! These uploads must be done by April 11, 2010 and a copy should be forwarded to our office electronically when you do your online upload. Objectives: To develop life skills in composition, light, story line, posing and awareness. To encourage 4-H members to use photography as a meaningful communications tool in their lives. To provide photography project showcase opportunity for 4-H members. To continue sharing the message of 4-H. To utilize photographs which can promote and strengthen the 4-H program. 6 Page 6 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Public Speaking Contest Special Rules for Agricultural Public Speaking Contest 1. Entry: An entry fee of $20 made payable to HLS&R will be charged. Entries may now be submitted online or by paper entry. Both the online entry link and paper forms can be found at Online entries must be submitted prior to midnight, February 5, 2010 and paper entries, Indemnities and W-9 forms must be postmarked by February 5, Eligibility: This event is open to students, ages 9-18 years of age, as well as students in the 3rd grade who have reached their eighth birthday as of August 31, 2009, who are members of 4-H or FFA who meet all Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Junior Show Rules and Requirements or who are attending public school in Harris, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Montgomery or Waller Counties. Contestants must be passing all subjects for the semester or grading period immediately preceding the contest as certified by the school official on the entry form. Junior Division participants must be between the ages of 9 and 13 or students in the third grade who have reached their eighth birthday on or before August 31, Senior Division participants must be between the ages of 14 and 18 on or before August 31, For more information and complete details for this event refer to the exhibitor handbook at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Quality Counts Multi-Media Contest This show is subject to the Houston Livestock Show General Rules and Regulations and to the Special Rules of this section. Entries may now be submitted online or by paper entry.
