2 Windword Page 2 BOARD OF GOVERNOR S MEETING Windycrest Sailing Club Board of Governors Meeting Minutes May 7, 2012 (draft) The BOG convened at 6:30 pm in the Sand Springs Case Community Center on May 7, Board members present were Doug Lewis (Commodore), Michael Jones (Rear-Commodore), Chris Gill (Fleet Captain), Pam Low (Secretary), Tom Proctor (Treasurer), and Judy Andrews (Activities Captain). Guests included Facilities Manager Jack Stewart, and prospective members Brian Meier. Introductions were made. Brian had attended the sailing seminar in February. He applied for associate membership and was approved. Facilities Manager s Report: Jack complimented the workers from the work party and said it looked like a successful work party. There were 2 x10 s left over and we will keep them for next year. Terry Taylor, who does boat lift repair at the club, expressed interest in the smoker that is stored in the empty trailer lot. No decision was made on what to do with the smoker. The inspector from the Corps showed up an hour early on April 26th for the environmental inspection. They may want back flow preventers on lines going to the docks in the future. The regular inspection will be sometime between June 4th and June 9th. Activities Captain s Report: Judy discussed the many activities that will be happening at the club during June the raft up, Snipe Regatta, Cheeseburgers in Paradise, and the beach party. Fleet Captain s Report: Chris noted the calendar listed the Snipe regatta on Saturday June 9th and Sunday June 3rd instead of Sunday June 10th. Discussion was held on types of trophies for this year. Treasurer s Report: Tom distributed the financials for the month. He will be sending the bills for Part B dues to those members who missed the work party. He reminded us that Part B dues are due July 1. Secretary s Report: Pam asked for corrections or additions to last month s minutes. Being none, the April minutes were approved as published in the Windword. She said that the directories and renewal packets were distributed at the work party. The packets that were not picked up will be mailed on Tuesday. A number of members were unable to attend the work party due to graduations. Pam asked if it would be beneficial to move the work party to the last weekend in April. Jack noted that it might be easier to remove leaves at that time. Michael will look at that as an option for next year. Pam noted that it is important to be able to identify boats and empty trailers at the club. She sent out a notice reminding members to label their trailers as required in our club rules. Another notice will be in the Windword and on the website. After giving time for members to comply on their own, she plans to label all unlabeled trailers. Another item discussed was the option for members to order additional directories on their renewal form. Rear Commodore s Report: Michael was concerned over the walkway to the board boat dock. Jack said that Yul Shaffer has a plan to fix it. It appears that the truss is broken but BOARD OF GOVERNORS COMMODORE Doug Lewis d3klewis@cox.net VICE COMMODORE Danny Ziegler danny@windycrest.com REAR COMMODORE Michael Jones cell mcima@cox.net PAST COMMODORE David Briggs david.briggs@valmont.com SECRETARY Pam Low pglow@sbcglobal.net TREASURER Tom Proctor TomProCPA@aol.com FLEET CAPTAIN Chris Gill gillchr@cox.net ACTIVITIES CAPTAIN Judy Andrews jaandrews@cox.net the attachment parts are still there. Danny did a great job of having plenty to do with the number of people he had to keep busy. I didn t see many of you for I was in the upper lot and had to depart early for my daughter s graduation. For some reason my wife said I had to be there. I will be making up time later in the season. Kim and I were fortunate enough to get out on the water for Mother s Day. It was nice seeing a number of boats just out enjoying the beautiful day. Temperatures were reasonable and the winds were variable, a great day. The Memorial Day Brunch and long distance race is coming up soon. It is so helpful if you could make reservations early so that the Fleet Captain Matt Gillis can have an idea of how much food to purchase for the event. This is one of the club s better attended events, it is an opportunity to see old friends and meet some of our new members. I hope to see you there. Be sure and put June 20th, on your calendar for Cheese Burgers in Paradise along with the Beach Party June 30th. If you haven t been to one of these gatherings in a while you need to make plans to come out and enjoy the great outdoors. Well, that is three of the many things going on at the club that I will be attending. I hope to see you at Windycrest socializing or sailing, life can t get much better than that. See you on the Water, Doug Lewis, Commodore Secretary s Report continued from page 2 ing out the white shed to be sure everything in it is club owned. Michael moved we spend $800 plus tax and shipping for parts for the training boats. Motion was seconded and approved. He stressed we need to get 2 new lasers for the junior program. Ballpark value of a good laser is $3500. He may be able to work with the OSU sailing club trading 420 s for lasers. The OSU team is going to Annapolis to compete and requested permission to practice at Windycrest. Request was approved. The swim test for the Juniors will be at the Salvation Army on Thursday, May 24th at 6:45 pm. Michael moved to donate $100 to the Salvation Army for the use of pool Commodore s Report: Doug reported that the Tulsa Public Schools has a program that might be interested in starting a sailing program. They might be able to use our old Sabots and sail on Lake Yahola. The CPR certification course will be Thursday, May 24th from 6:00 to 9:00 at 1283 S. Detroit. Doug thanked Danny for organizing the work party and thanked everyone who showed up. The meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm. The next meeting of the BOG will be June 4, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Sand Springs Case Community Center. Respectfully submitted, Pam Low, Secretary, Windycrest Sailing Club

We had great time doing lots of timely upgrades for the Club. We kept chugging along on C dock. The upper level of the Pavilion got painted. The bathouse got a little make-over. The maintience building area got a little TLC. Not to mention dinghy slip work, tree trimming, shed cleaning, bar making, leaf raking, sign painting, boat shuffuling, and much more. No names, because everyone there worked together to make it all happen. All of you did important jobs, and all of us thank all of you. For those of you who were unable to attend, we will be having a few make-up work partys and projects. You'll need to get your work party credit in by July 1, We had a number of unfinished and unstarted projects along with the continuing dock anchoring project. Watch the website and your inbox for more details. Did you know that drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death of children? Adults, be sure to enforce our rule that children under 12 years old wear a PFD when on our docks and vessels. Be Safe around the Club. The First Aid Kits around the Club have been updated. You can find them in the following places: RC Boat, Ski Barge, Whaler, Pavilion, Bath House, and Maintainence Building. Use them if necessary - it's what they are there for. If you use one, let me know so we can get it restocked. It is not to soon for us to be thinking about the future of Windycrest. Later this year we will need members to step into the rolls of Rear Commodore, Secretary, Activities Captain, Fleet Captain, and Windword Editor. Please think of members who you think would be great at any of these positions. Submit a nomination to any current board member. The BOG welcomes your input. The next six to eight weeks will be a really busy time for the Club. Check out the rest of this Windword for details. The activities include regattas, fleet meetings, training, racing, and parties. Isn't it great! All that sitting around last winter dreaming about sailing and spending time on the boat is finally here. Enough said. I'm going sailing. We had a wonderful turnout in March for the New Kids on the Dock. We had a total of 44 folks show up for the spaghetti luncheon with about 10 more straglers who arrived after lunch. A fair amount of folks showed up for the chilli dinner the Thistlers hosted. The day was beautiful if a bit windy. A few brave souls took their boats out on the water that day. The Chilli was fantastic. The all club work day had fantastic results. For those of you that were unable to attend, please contact Danny Ziegler with other opportunities coming up in the year to pay off your part B work dues. May 28th is the day to set aside for the Memorial Day brunch and long distance race. The Catalina 22 Fleet will be hosting the brunch. On June 2nd, the C dock members will be hosting a raft up.this is the first weekend of the juniors program so it looks to be a good day to get out in the water and have a fun party. For those of you that are racers, Windycrest will be hosting the Snipes District 2 Championship on June 9th and 10th. Let us hope all of our Snipers get out and compete. For those of you looking to take it down a notch or two, the Sunfish and Docks A and B have an event for you. On June 23rd. They will be hosting a Cheeseburgers in Paradise party. If that party does not satisfy your island fever, then there is one more event in June sure to whet your appetite. The Keelboat Drysail lot will be hosting a beach party on June 30th. This was scheduled around a full moon, so the night should be spectacular. As you can see there are plenty of activities to keep you busy in the month of June. 9 Windword Page 9 REAR COMMODORE S REPORT Fleet Captain s Report Congrats to our club for another great work day. If you have suggestions for next year - please share them with me and I'll do my best. Danny and Jack should be thanked for the leadership and planning. You can't make a work party happen overnight. The sailing season is firing up so if you haven't sailed this year then man the braces get to windword. I have no idea what that means but it sounds cool. Sail like your life depends on it. Your British insult word of the month is "Bounder". Someone who has annoyed you and needs to be put in their place. Watch "Those Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines" for more. Please use the website to keep up with announcements. We will update it often with Danny's help so use it and let us know you are using it. I voted to end the fireworks due to fire hazards and liabilities. The BOG considered the options and with sadness made the decision. We will look for ways to make it a special celebration. Training is shaping up nicely so join us in the Youth Program or the Adult Program. Kenny and IV are gifted instructors. Take advantage. If you are aware of any issues with club boats - please let me know. Per the bylaws - anyone using club boats must talk to me first. Please help me find 2 good Lasers for our youth program. Giving to youth is the best gift a sailor can give. Michael Jones Spring Racing Series is underway, and unlike last Spring, the wind and weather gods have been kind. So far we have had 4 Keelboat Series Races and 4 Centerboard Series Races, and all have gone off without a hitch. Thanks to the PRO s and their crews who have run a flawless series of races so far. The racing schedule is really getting ready to heat up, with Windycrest hosting several big events over the next months. First, we are hosting the CSSA Spring Open on the 19th and 20th of May. We are hoping for some out of town racers to join us, along with a good turnout of Windycrest boats. Plan to be there! We are also hosting the Snipe Class District 2 championship on June 8th through 10th. Thanks to Steve Snider for driving this one, it will be great to see a bunch of Snipes on Lake Keystone they haven t been here for a while! Finally, in September we will be hosting the Women s North American Sunfish championships. This is a big one, and it should bring some great exposure for Windycrest. Please be ready to step up and volunteer to help on any or all of these events! If you have been thinking about coming out and racing, my advice is to just do it! There are plenty of experienced racers willing to help. See you on the lake, Chris Gill WSC Fleet Captain House For Sale Lake Keystone View Check out MLS# with Coldwell Banker.
