Everyone should take the heat seriously and not over exert themselves or their guests while we try to get through this ugly heat spell. When there has been wind, the evenings have been particularly refreshing and enjoyable. This is your last chance to throw your hat into the ring for any of the positions on the Board of Governors. We will finalize the BOG's nominations at the September (sounds cooler already!) meeting. Just let me know if you are interested in any of the officer positions. We have some good volunteers for a couple of the positions, but that should not discourage anyone from showing interest and becoming more involved in the management of our club. Steve P A S T C O M M O D O R E S R E P O R T Well, here we are in the hottest part of the summer, not the best sailing time in this part of the country. Only the most devoted sailor will be out there sailing in 100 degree temperatures. BUT, as unbelievable as it may seem the evening temperature and sailing have been FANTASTIC. The weather for the WSC Beach Party could not have been more enjoyable. The cool temperatures and stiff breeze were a surprise. Even though there was not a full moon, the stars were so bright, night sailing was enjoyable. If you missed this event you really missed a good time. Several of our juniors participated in the CSSA Junior Regatta, at Ninnescah Sailing Association, on July 31. The club stacking trailer became a real work of art as Kenny Baggett managed to load all five boats on the one trailer. 7 Windword Page 7 K E E L B O A T H A N D I C A P F L E E T I N G M E E T I N G N O T E S July 29, 2010 July's fleet meeting was one of the best of the season. Last Saturday, representatives and crews from seven keelboats from the fleet, gathered at the pavilion for a cookout and sail away on a full moon night. It was supposed to be HOT, which it wasn't, thanks to a front that rolled in at about sunset and cooled us off about 10 degrees. As usual, the food was top notch. We all brought something for the grill and something to share, and as always happens, we had a perfectly balanced meal with plenty of salads, side dishes and deserts. After we ate, Mary Snider gave us an update on the status of the regatta and the approaching launch party on the 19th. We still need items for the live and silent auction so take a look around the house and help us fill the auction tables. Again, we need quality items for this fund raiser so if you have that item that you bought that just doesn't fit your abode, consider donating it for the auction. After the very brief meeting, most of us manned the boats and sailed under a full moon over Keystone. There are two events this month that you need to put on your calendar, besides the launch party. Saturday, August 7th will be a beach party across the lake at Washington Irving north. A fire and a water taxi will be provided. Added details will be forthcoming from WSC. Activities will start on the beach about 6:30 PM. Also, on the 21st we will have the last night race of the year. We are planning Augusts' fleet meeting as the same format as July's meeting, a cookout at the pavilion and a sail after dark on Saturday night, August 28. We again will plan on grilling between 6:30 and 7:00. Next month's full moon is on the 24th so the moon will not be up until later in the evening but we will still plan on sailing after dinner. As summer winds down, we can look forward to some cooler days at the lake. When that happens, come join the fun. Until then, stay cool and safe. Terry and Elaine Co- Fleet Captains

8 Windword Page 8 CSSA Junior Regatta Ninnescah Sailing Association Cheney Lake, KS--July31, 2010 On Saturday, July 31 st, five Windycrest juniors competed at a regatta at NSA in Kansas. Please look at the photo of the WSC stacker trailer it held an Opti, a Laser, and three Sunfish! An extra note of thanks goes to Kenny Baggett for taking responsibility for loading it and taking it to the regatta. The five sailors were Ethan Baggett, Samantha Kerns, Chandler and Christian Bell, and Ian Jones. Thanks also to (mom) Ginger Bell for the photos. Our sailors enjoyed competing against other sailors at a different venue. We can be very proud of them! As you can see from the photos, NSA has a sandy beach to launch dinghies, trees for shade and comfort, plus an air-conditioned clubhouse (not shown). Although the temperature was 100 degrees, the mph breeze made it bearable for those who were out on the water. Three races were sailed. There was a pizza dinner plus awards, t-shirts, and freebies for the competitors. 10 Windword Page 10 WINDYCREST BEACH PARTY AUGUST 9TH At the beach party the other night I heard it said What happens at the beach stays at the beach, so I can t tell everything I know. However, there are a few things I can say; for those of you who thought it would be too hot show up. Too bad; you missed one of the best evenings of the summer. The fire pits were ready at 7 PM as promised and by being on the west side of the lake we had almost no direct sun and plenty of daylight. The attendance was fairly light, around 25 people, and I have to say it was one of the best beach party in years. Of course there was plenty of food. As darkness arrived and the onshore breeze filled in, which kept the bugs at bay, the only thing missing might have been a full moon. Even so it was a clear night with lots of shooting stars and entertaining stories. Steven Gent was celebrating his new teaching job in Cushing, OK while Kenny Baggett was celebrating a birthday; the Baggett s provided a very large cooler containing a Rum, Pineapple & Coconut concoction that closely resembled a tasty Caribbean drink known as the "Pain Killer". When that well ran dry around midnight the party packed up and headed for home, or in some cases an evening sail. I was somewhat disappointed not to see any new members there; come on boys & girls, what does it take to get you out to one of these functions. The people on the beach under 40 kept us old farts engaged well into the night. I for one had a great time, even if I did miss my usual bedtime routine and suffer a bit of cotton mouth the next morning. Richard Ferguson

11 Windword Page 11 The Spirit of Windycrest Still Lives! In 1979 Jack Barcus, then Commodore of Windycrest, wrote a message for the Windycrest Directory. He spoke of the Spirit of Windycrest. The Spirit of Windycrest was related to the members and their dedication to the Club, the Fleets, the Junior Program, the Racing Program, the Work Parties and all the things that unite the Club and made it a great place to sail. It wasn't until the next year that the MS Regatta started and Club members spent hundreds of hours each year for the charity. During the years things have changed, some Fleets have disbanded and only a few are now strong and active. The Junior Program has flourished along with the Adult Education, and the Close/MS Regatta has made over $1,000,000. However, last Fall and this Spring I watched the "Spirit of Windycrest" in action again. Howard and Eleanor Feldmann gave their San Juan 7.7 to the Regatta to be sold with the proceeds going to MS. It had been without full maintenance for several years due to Howard's health problems. The boat needed help, and the members started helping. Rex Donley, Jack Stewart and myself put the boat on the Club Hydrohoist and cleaned the bottom. Bruce Hurst lent the use of his steam cleaner and teak for an inside repair. Richard Ferguson and Tracy Lang helped clean the top and the insides. Mildew loves an unused boat. The outside of the boat looked like it had the "black measles". Allene Donley reworked the boom cover, Roger Kerr donated sail work and Kevin Meehan discounted parts and line for the refurbishing of the boat. After the boat had been completely refurbished, Richard Ferguson shot a series of great photos for the sales notice. The mast had to come down to finish the halyards, this was overseen by Terry Rainey, along with Pam and Karey Low, Maria and Richard Ferguson, and myself. The new owners, Larry and Deb Gill, soon to be Windycrest members, also helped. Rod Sherwin, as a past 7.7 owner, explained to the Gills what a wonderful boat it is. Over 15 Windycrest members volunteered during the project. The Spirit of Windycrest still lives. Mike Lang Regatta Committee Close/MS Launch Party Is Here Thursday, August 19 Did we say rais in money for MS, hav in fun, listen in to the Zoo Grass Boys Band (Bluegrass pick in and fiddl in), bidd in on great auction items, step in up to the saloon, eat in?
