For more information and to register, contact the Caldwell County Extension Office. Health Benefits of Walking Did you know that walking is the most popular physical activity among adults? This may be because it is so easy to do. Perhaps it is because there is no special equipment that is needed. Maybe it is because you can do it almost anywhere. Regardless of why it is the favorite, there are certainly many reasons why it is a good idea to walk. Walking improves blood flow. It gets your heart beating a little faster and the blood flows a little faster too. Walking also helps prevent heart disease and lowers blood pressure when done regularly. Walking strengthens your bones. Walking can make your bones stronger. This is especially important for those at risk of osteoporosis. One study found that women who walked 30 minutes a day reduced their risk of hip fractures by 40 percent. Walking can lighten your mood. People who walk often are in better moods. This is because walking releases endorphins to the body, making the person feel better. Walking can help with weight loss. For an average adult, a brisk 30-minute walk burns 200 calories. Calories burned can lead to weight loss. Walking can also help individuals maintain weight if they are happy with their current weight.

4 Walking improves sleep. When people are regular walkers, they are more likely to have better sleep patterns. They are also less likely to have insomnia. Walking slows memory loss. People who walk more have shown fewer declines in memory over time. Walking could lower your Alzheimer s risk. One study has shown that men who walked more than one -fourth mile per day had less dementia and onset of Alzheimer s disease when compared to those who did not walk. Walking helps you do more, longer. Being active on a regular basis actually allows a person to be more independent for longer as they age. There are many benefits to walking on a regular basis and we are learning more every day. If you are looking for an easy activity that you can do almost anywhere, walking is a great choice. Reference: Arthritis Foundation. 12 Benefits of Walking. exercise/workouts/walking/wow-of-walking.php Source: Nicole Peritore, Extension Specialist for Family Health; University of Kentucky; College of Agriculture, Food and Environment FAFSA Changes Effective Soon Source: Jennifer Hunter, extension specialist for family financial management If you have gone to college or have had a child go, chances are you ve filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA. Changes to this form announced by the Obama administration in 2015 are about to go into effect for the school year. One of the biggest changes to the application is how soon you can fill it out. You can submit the form for the school year beginning Oct. 1, This is sooner than in previous years. With the filing deadline remaining June 30, 2017, it will give you more time to fill out the form, explore your financial aid options and meet state and school deadlines for aid. Remember, Kentucky is a first-come, first-served state when it comes to financial aid awards. You ll want to get your FAFSA in as soon as possible if you plan on receiving state aid. Once the money is gone, no other awards will be given. You now will submit older tax data to the FAFSA. In previous years, college-bound students and their families have had to estimate their income on the FAFSA and update it once they file their taxes. This change does away with the estimation and updating. For the year, you will submit your 2015 income and taxes. Since these taxes have already been filed, you may be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically place your 2015 tax information into your FAFSA. The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority has great information for college-bound individuals and links to useful tools like the FAFSA4caster, which can give you an estimate of your net cost for college now. Visit their website for more information. Extension offices often offer financial education programs for people of all ages. To find one near you, contact the Caldwell County Extension office. Educational programs of the Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, sex, religion, disability or national origin.

5 Fall Allergies Source: Nicole Peritore, senior extension specialist There s a lot to look forward to in the fall, but if you suffer from fall allergies, it can be hard to enjoy the season. Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, starts with cold-like symptoms. Unlike a cold that goes away within a week, hay fever lingers until the cause of the allergic reaction is identified and treated. One of the most common causes, especially during the fall allergy season, is ragweed. Ragweed begins to pollinate in mid-august and sticks around until a hard freeze. Mold can cause problems for allergy sufferers any time of the year, but a warmer-than-normal fall, high humidity or windy conditions can allow mold spores to be released into the air for an extended period of time. Raking leaves, a common fall chore, can also stir up mold and pollen in the ground. Allergy sufferers who rake their yard can use an N-95 respirator mask when raking leaves to lessen the impacts of allergens. Children who have allergies should avoid jumping or playing in leaves. Many indoor allergies can worsen in the fall, as you stay inside more. While you can t get rid of all the allergens in your home, you can minimize them. Here are some tips: Wash your sheets weekly in hot water and your blankets every two to three weeks to kill dust mites. Replace pillows every two to three years. Encase your mattress, pillows and other padded furniture with allergen-proof covers. Sometimes signs of allergies aren t straightforward as it can be hard to distinguish an allergy from the common cold. This is especially true with children. If you or your child has cold symptoms that last more than a week or seem to occur at the same time every year, you may want to talk with your health care provider about it. Only a certified health care provider can truly diagnose allergies and prescribe treatments.
