Central Office: (605) High School Office: (605) Elementary School: (605) Primary School: (605) GREETING FROM INTERIM ACSS PRESIDENT March has been an exciting month at the Aberdeen Catholic Schools. Cavalier fans were proud of the Girls and Boys basketball teams and wrestlers, as they represented us well on their respective statewide tournament stages. An RES student qualified to compete at the Regional Geography Bee competition. The Math Counts team competed at state and placed fourth. Our middle and high school students attended the small group contest at NSU and received many excellent ratings in their performances. The Music in Our Schools concert was a huge success. Attendance at conferences at all levels was strong. While all of these accomplishments are something to be proud of, we can also be proud of the faith life in the Aberdeen Catholic School System. For where two or three are gathered in my name, so am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:20) There have been numerous opportunities for us to gather as a faith family throughout March to attend Mass, participate in Reconciliation, pray, fast and sharing of treasure. RHS made history, so to speak, in that at the weekly Mass on March 13, Fr. Joe Holzhauser was one of the first to pray for the intention of Pope Francis in the Eucharistic Prayer, as the announcement of the Holy Father s election was within the same hour. Through the Sacraments and our interactions with each other Christ is ever present. It is easy to have faith when things are going well, but we know struggles are part of life. ACSS is here to develop and nurture the faith of students, faculty and staff. Your prayers of support, your volunteer time and the gifts of your treasure are so important, as we build the Kingdom on Earth. If you have not yet given to the Annual Fund Campaign, please prayerfully consider doing so. National Volunteer Week is April 21-April 27. As a small token of our appreciation, we are inviting anyone who volunteers, in any capacity for ACSS, to join us for refreshments after each of the school Masses that week. Wednesday, April 24, 9:00-10:00 a.m. at RES; Wednesday, April 24, 3:30-4:30 at RHS and Thursday, April 25, 1:00-2:00 p.m. at RPS. Volunteers are vital to our continued success-we could not do it without you! At the Catholic Schools Week Mass, Bishop Paul Swain announced the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Theology Curriculum Framework will be implemented for grades 7-12, beginning fall I am happy to report a task force has been formed to review the framework and has been meeting to fulfill this directive. Members are Dr. Martin Albl, Mrs. Peggy Cox, Ms. Cherie Heinz, Fr. Joe Holzhauser, Ms. Patty Martin, Ms. Katie Mellor, Fr. Shane Stevens and Mr. Mark Stone. Throughout the coming months this group will be studying the framework and its integration at Roncalli. We are entering busy months ahead. The spring musical performance, spring sports, concerts, awards events, First Communion and Confirmation are just a few of the opportunities to celebrate that which is good in our lives. Thank you for being part of the Roncalli Family. God s Blessings! JoEllen Lindner ASCC Interim President WE HAVE A POPE Please keep our new shepherd, POPE FRANCIS, in your prayers. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the 76-year-old cardinal and archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was named Pope Benedict XVI's successor on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 His motto: "miserando atque eligendo" -- Latin for "because he saw him through the eyes of mercy and chose him." Instilling Catholic values and promoting academic excellence by nurturing mind, body and soul
2 PAGE FINANCIAL AID If you want to be considered for financial aid next year, the online application MUST be completed by APRIL 9TH. Applications are at signin/413nd. Additional Scholarship forms and the work grant applications can be found on our web page. Please contact Vickie Haiar at if you have any questions or need further assistance in the application process. SHADOW DAY ABERDEEN CATHOLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM As we've noted before, we believe parents are our best recruiters because other parents want to hear from a satisfied customer. Our plan is to hold a Shadow Day on April 22, when the public schools are scheduled not to be in session. On that day, prospective students can spend part or all of the school day shadowing a Roncalli student to get a sense of what a Roncalli day is like. Please encourage your friends to try us out on that day. We can schedule shadowing appointments on just about any day, and Lent may be an especially appropriate time to invite a family to check us out. Encourage a family to visit school or have their child shadow on a Mass day or a day with Stations of the Cross. Faith is at the heart of everything we do, and prospective parents will appreciate the faithfulness of our students and their involvement in the liturgy and devotions. RHS SPRING MUSICAL Roncalli High School s Production of Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA will be performed April 18 th and 19 th at 7:30 and April 20 th at 1:30 at the Aberdeen Civic Theatre. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults and will be available April 8 19 at the high school office and also at the door. Music Theater International describes AIDA as a contemporary musical that takes on a grand classic tale of the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. As forbidden love blossoms between them, the young couple is forced to face death or part forever. Together, they set a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity. With a pop-rock score that features stirring ballads and rousing choral numbers, Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA SCHOOL EDITION is a modern crowd pleaser with exuberant dancing, staging and singing. TUITION DUE DATE REMINDER All tuition and fees must be paid by May 1st, 2013, except for those families who had enrolled in the automatic deduction plan at the beginning of the year. Seniors will not be able to graduate and students will not be allowed to attend classes if all tuition is not paid by this date. We encourage parents to take advantage of MY SCHOOL BUCKS. This program allows you to manage your child s lunch account. You can put money in their account or simply monitor use. An easy way to stay on top of the funds in their account. We have a link on the homepage of our website that makes it easy to access

RHS BBB Cheerleaders Honored with SPIRIT OF SIX AWARD Our Varsity Boys Basketball Cheerleaders were awarded the coveted Spirit of Six Cheerleader Award at the State A Tournament in Rapid City March 16th. The award is given in memory of six Rapid City High School cheerleaders that died in a plane crash in 1968 on their way to the State A Basketball Tournament in Sioux Falls. The winning cheer squad is considered best on crowd control, dress, sportsmanship and enthusiasm at each of the State Boys Basketball Tournaments. -The award is sponsored by the SD Peace Officers Association SADD CONFERENCE Members of RHS SADD recently attended the South Dakota State SADD Conference in Sioux Falls, SD. Mikayla Titus is a member of the South Dakota SADD Teen Advisory Board and had several responsibilities to ensure that the convention was a success. Roncalli members, Titus, Katie Torrence, Hannah Anderson, Tori Heier, and Rayce Simes carried out activities for a breakout session that was attended by students and advisors from schools across eastern South Dakota. The session was entitled Fatal Vision and involved the use of distorted vision goggles to simulate how vision can be affected when a person is under the influence. The students came away from the conference with new ideas and motivated to stick to their commitment to remain drug and alcohol free.
