First moderate intensity cardio for 30 minutes, 5 days a week or vigorous cardio for 20 minutes, 3 days a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous cardio, 3-5 days a week along with strength training consisting of 8-10 exercises involving the major muscles of the body: The chest, back, shoulders, biceps, triceps, legs, and core on 2-3 nonconsecutive days a week. Rest days allow your muscles to change and grow stronger while also allowing your body to recover. Mind: There are many studies showing benefits of exercising the mind as we age. While there are many activities to improve brain function research at Stanford Dance shows the most beneficial by far was frequent dancing. Dancing frequently reduced risk of dementia by 76%. That was the greatest risk reduction of any activity studied, cognitive or physical. Spirit: This one is unique to each person and no one activity is better than the other. Some examples include spending time with family and friends, community involvement, meditation, listening to music, participating in hobbies, mindful activities such as yoga and Tai chi, interact with nature, etc.
