1 Monthly Newsletter of Olivedale Senior Center The Oak Leaf June 2013 Volume 41,, Issue 6 At approximately 12:30p Wednesday, April 24, five suspects were questioned at Olivedale during the annual Volunteer Luncheon about their extra curricular activities and love of Olivedale angel food cake. One, Sharon Shaffer was found guilty of stealing angel food cakes from five different victims. Each victim was called to the stage and awarded the angel food cake that was snatched from them by the Creeper. A witness said that victim 1 was found lying on the dining room floor with a playing card in their hand and a whistle Mark Camden, award winning composer/performer with his hand made flutes. lying nearby. A third witness indicated that victim 3 choked on a tic-tac after a bowling ball was thrown through the car windshield. A fourth witness came forward to say that victim 4 was found downstairs near the elevator choked with a blood pressure cuff. The final witness provided that victim 5 was found at the entrance to Olivedale with a harmonica lying next to him and bound with duct tape. All five suspects were placed at the crime scene. The luncheon attendees had great fun, were entertained by Mark Camden, award winning composer/performer and recording artist playing his hand made Native American flutes. 3 June 2013 The Oak Leaf Page 3 COMMUNICATION CORNER Annual Health Fair Summer is here and it is time for Olivedale s Annual Health Fair. This one day free event is open to members and their families and will be held Wednesday, June 19 from 9:00a 12:00p. Have you or a loved one required respite care or transitional care, needed home health aides after surgery or just have questions about home services other than healthcare? Get all the free information you can possibly process from healthcare professionals that have the senior population in mind. Get your blood pressure read, blood glucose tested, balance checked and your ears and eyes as well. Last year we had many surrounding area healthcare related professionals discuss short term care, long term care, pill dispensing, home health, diet, senior services and much, much more. Door prizes will be plentiful and nutritional snacks available. Spend the morning feeding your mind. 2nd Tuesday Lunch This month s Tuesday lunch is going Heart Healthy! Join us Tuesday, June 11 from 11:30a to 12:30p for a delicious, yet healthy meal. Grilled chicken gyros made with fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onion in a scrumptious cucumber dressing served with pita or pretzel chips and dip and topped off with a cool creamy strawberry mousse for dessert. All this for only $5 a person; your wallet and your waistline will thank you. Reservations must be made by Friday, June 7. Fish Fry What s better on a summer s day than fried fish, all you can eat served with baked potato, coleslaw EATING AT OLIVEDALE and dessert! Be sure to mark Tuesday, June 25 on your calendar for the monthly fish fry. Olivedale s fish is dished up from 4:30p to 6:30p all for only $8 for adults and $4 for children. Tickets are available at the office for pre-sale and can be purchased at the door but may be limited.

4 Page 4 The Oak Leaf June 2013 Classes And More Ballroom Dance ~ Bolero After a 2 year hiatus, BOLERO is BACK! Now is the time to update your old sock-hop moves on the dance floor; of shuffling feet and swaying back and forth with the more refined and graceful movements that characterize this dance. Bolero is an enduring dance style that defines like no other the essence of the romanticism we find in Latin music. Join us on Fridays at 1:00pm as our instructor Stan teaches the effortless patterns and quiet graceful moves that result in his students achieving the poise, self-confidence, and air of sophistication that exemplifies this timeless dance. Only $5 per person, per lesson is payable at the office before class and no partner required. Basket Class~ Lid & Jelly Jar Container We will be finishing up our sewing basket from last month by making the lid in our June class. The class will be Monday, June 10, starting at 9:00am. For those interested we will also be making a jelly jar container. The cost is $16.00 due on class day, but you must reserve your place by Friday, June 7. Call in advance if you need to cancel so you will not be charged for the prepared materials. Card Making Class Join us on Tuesday, June 18, at 2:00 pm as we make 3 handmade cards using rubber stamps. There is nothing more gratifying than sending a friend or loved one a card created by yourself. All supplies are furnished and you must sign up for the class at the office by Friday, June 14. $6 is due on class day, and please call the office in advance if you need to cancel. The class is limited to 12 participants. Clogging Class Join us at Clogging Class every Wednesday during the month of June except for June 19, (clogging class will be moved to Friday, June 21 that week.) Class is from 9:30 to 10:30am for only $2 which is due on class day. Fall Bowling League The members of the fall bowling league would like to thank everyone for the wonderful bowling banquet held at Olivedale on April 11. The food was delicious and a good time was had by all. See you next fall! Travel Buddy Meeting The Travel Buddy meeting for the month of June will be held on Monday, June 10 at 1:00pm in the Rosebank Room. Chat Room The Chat Room is the place to be on June 11th, the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 1:00pm. Have a great lunch at Olivedale at 11:30am and stick around to have great conversation casual, friendly, supportive, and reminiscent. Here s one of the topics for the day: if you were to do something, anything without any ill effects from it, what would you want to do? See you soon, Barb Ramsey. Walkers Club On Thursday, June 6 we will meet at Olivedale at 8:15am for an 8:30am departure for a 3 mile hike at Slate Run Metro Park. This is a very level walk. Learn To Swim During the next session we are offering a learn to swim class from 7:00p 8:00p Tuesday and Thursday. This offering is limited to 6 people. Cost is $18. Sign up at the office. POOL SIGN UP for Summer Session begins Monday, June 17. Make sure your medical release is up-to-date. Check with your instructors or the office for sign-up procedures. This session will only be 6 weeks, running June 24 through August 2. ***Wellness Shutdown*** begins August 5 to August 16. There are no activities during this time in the Wellness Center.

In addition to a covered dish dinner, a plant trade for garden club members only is planned. Trades are limited to five plants per person. Any non-member wishing to attend should call or Coin Club The Olivedale Coin Club will hold the quarterly coin and currency auction on Tuesday, June 11 at 3:00pm in the Rosebank Room. Auction items may be previewed at 2:15pm. There will be 150 lots of coins or currency to choose from. Come spend an interesting afternoon at the auction and you may be the lucky bidder of the coin of your choice. Cost for the meal will be $13.50 and should be sent to Queen Loretta Nixon before June 7, Hatters are urged to decorate their hats in a patriotic theme. Who knows, the winner may just win a prize!!! See you there ladies. Quilt Charms June 27 brings the National Quilt Convention to Columbus, Ohio. You won t want to miss this if you are a quilter or not. Members be sure to sign up to have a seat on the Olivedale bus, or car pool list. We enjoyed the May Art Show with lots of scrap quilts entered. Next month we will announce the Best of Show winner. Author unknown Military Veterans of Olivedale Let s spring from May into Summer. It s float season and we will be participating in 8 to 10 parades this year. Any member of our veterans group is welcome to ride on the float. Join now and share the emotions and pride with our other members. Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 15, in partnership with the Chillicothe Veterans Administration, we will have a large bus at the local Lowe s parking lot. The bus will have a doctor, nurse and others to assist with any questions and or medical assistance. There will be drinks and sandwiches provided from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
