1 Monthly Newsletter of Olivedale Senior Center The Oak Leaf May 2013 Volume 41,, Issue 5 The annual Olivedale Senior Citizens of Fairfield County Inc. meeting was held March 27, Many Olivedale groups displayed items that highlighted their particular activity. Those attending showed their support by casting a ballot for the Olivedale Board Officers and Board Members. Thanks to all who came to cast a vote. Pictured bottom left is Jim Martin, Past President sharing words of wisdom with Larry Wentz the new Board President. The new officers are: Larry Wentz, President; John Swank, Vice President; Karen Sanner, Treasurer; Ruth Wilcox, Secretary; and Tom Corbin, Legal Advisor. The 2013 Board: Jim Agosta, Jim Barnhart, Marsha Bowsher, Peg Clifford, Joe Fox, Jon Noice, and Georgia Roebuck. The Olivedale advisory board consists of eight board members, four officers and a legal advisor; all volunteer positions. After the reports were complete, Jim Martin received a surprise from Karen and Carla. He had a perpetual question on bill paying days; Is my check ready? To reward his many years serving on the Olivedale Board, he finally received his six figure check. Of course, the six figures were all zeros. His moral to this is: careful what you wish for. Thanks to all who have served on the board for the awesome job!

The maintenance staff makes every attempt to prevent this situation. Also, remember the Olivedale Board imposed rule that children are not permitted to wait for parents or grandparents during scheduled activities except when the activity is open to the public. Public events such as the fish fry, pancake breakfast or art show are great times to show the younger ones in the family what Olivedale is all about. Although dances are open to the public, for safety issues, the Board has put an age 2nd Tuesday Lunch Spring is in full swing and so is our 2nd Tuesday Lunch. 4 Page 4 The Oak Leaf May 2013 Ballroom Dance ~ The TANGO The month of May not only brings the promise of spring flowers and warmer temperatures; there is also the opportunity to learn American Ballroom TANGO. Professional dance instructors have noted the similarities between the Foxtrot and Tango and the benefits of learning one or the other. The music and rhythms dictate different styles and posture but the footwork, patterns and directions due somewhat resemble each other. Tango demands a little more discipline and timing or as the professionals like to say stage presence. The consensus being the more proficient a student is in one dance, the easier it is to learn the other and learning the Tango will enhance your dancing the Foxtrot to a more refined status. Join Stan The Dance Man every Friday at 1:00pm. Only $5 per person, per lesson is payable at the office before class and don t forget no partner required. Olé! It may not be the only problem with the Standard American Diet, but it s becoming clear that it s the major one. According to a study published in the February 27 issue of PLOS journal, obesity does not cause diabetes: sugar does. The more sugar consumed, and the length of time sugar is consumed, directly influences the prevalence of diabetes. In other words, diabetics don t start consuming more sugar; people who consume more sugar are likely to become diabetics. Perhaps one of the most important findings is that all calories are not created equal. All calories give off the same amount of energy when burned, but a body treats sugar calories differently, and that difference is damaging in the long run.
