All through the town. Are you among the many Olivedale groups, day trip or vacation travelers? This is how you can get involved in helping with the purchase of a new bus. On the front cover of the July newsletter a plea went out for donations to purchase a new Olivedale bus. If you have not yet seen the bus poster, visit Olivedale and take a close look at the missing parts. As donations come in, we will build our bus tire by tire, window by window, seat by seat, etc. Our goal is $40,000. If raffles are more your style, we offer another avenue for collecting funds for the bus. Avis Smith has graciously donated a very special quilt for us to raffle off. The presidential quilt has every President from Washington to George W. Bush. Each President s picture and name is hand stitched. Avis included a hand stitched liberty bell on the reverse side with her name and date. This quilt could be worth thousands of dollars. During every event possible, look for the quilt on display and someone selling raffle tickets. Tickets are $1 or 6 for $5. Tickets can be purchased at the office through November 16, which will be the date of the craft bazaar and the drawing. Remember that Olivedale is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization and your donations are tax deductable.

Please check with the office before your meetings or classes to see where they will be held during that time period. This wellness shutdown will be a transition to a new annual shutdown time frame. Therefore, the Wellness Center will be closed again the first two weeks of January. 3 August 2013 The Oak Leaf Page 3 COMMUNICATION CORNER Annual Health Fair Many thanks to the 39 participating vendors who made their way to Olivedale June 19 th with loads of information and fun ways to get members thinking about their health mind, body and soul. Healthy snacks were provided by Olivedale for attendees. Each member received a ticket at the door for a chance to win a door prize donated by each vendor. Numerous members had blood pressures checked, blood glucose checked and their balance evaluated with high tech equipment. This event brings local health professionals together with our membership and provides free information with new participating vendors each year. If you missed this year s fair, come next year to see what you missed. It will make you feel better! The Doctor will see you now! 2nd Tuesday Lunch Ahoy Mates! 2nd Tuesday on August 13 will also be Family Fun day from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Olivedale will be overrun with pirates, lassies and sea dogs looking for buried treasure. Bring the kids and grandkids for a fun filled day of pirating and laughte aarrgghh. Family fun day is also 2nd Tuesday lunch. Enjoy a lunch of sailing hot dogs, fruit sword kabobs, island icy and sailor s delight ice cream all for $5 adults, $3 children. Remember lassie to make your lunch reservations by August 9th. EATING AT OLIVEDALE Fish Fry The fish is fried to perfection, the baked potatoes are light and fluffy and the coleslaw is delicious as always and there s dessert!!! How can you pass up a meal like this? Come join us on Tuesday, August 27 from 4:30p ~ 6:30p for all the fish you can eat served with baked potato, coleslaw and dessert. $8 for adults and $4 for children, tickets are available at the office for pre-sale and can be purchased at the door but may be limited. Why wait till Friday? Eat fish at Olivedale on Tuesday!

4 Page 4 The Oak Leaf August 2013 Classes And More Ballroom Dance ~ Tango The TANGO, back by popular demand! If you are new to Tango or need a refresher come join Stan, for this sensual ballroom dance. The Tango expresses an element of romance in synchronized movements. Originally, the Tango was performed by only women, but once it spread into Argentina, it developed into a dance for couples. Gentleman are now a necessity to showcase their partner cheek to cheek. So clinch a rose between your teeth and get ready to Tango!!! Classes are every Friday at 1:00p, only $5 per person, per lesson is payable at the office before class and a partner is not required. Basket Class ~ Picnic Silverware Basket Join the basket class on Monday, August 12 as we create a picnic silverware basket for your next family get-together. This useful basket is (3) - 5 high baskets joined together, color choices are: red, blue or brown. The cost is $26.00 due on class day, but you must reserve your place by Friday, August 9. Call in advance if you need to cancel so you will not be charged for the prepared material. Class is limited to 12 participants. Card Making Class Spend an afternoon creating 3 greeting cards using rubber stamps, that you can share with friends or loved ones. The class is on Tuesday, August 20 at 2:00p, all supplies are furnished. You must register by Friday August 16, and pay the class fee of $6 at that time. If you cancel after August 16 or don t show up, your class fee will not be refunded. The class is limited to 12 participants. Clogging Class Clogging class is held every Wednesday from 9:30a to 10:30a. $2 is due at class time. Be sure to stop by for this fun aerobic work out! Travel Buddy Meeting Join the Travel Buddy s group on Monday August 12 at 1:00p in the house. This is your chance to meet other Olivedale members who are interested in travel and looking for a friend to share the experience with. Chat Room Chat room will start meeting at 12:30p, immediately following the 2nd Tuesday lunch. We d love for you to join Marty and me for an interesting chat. A subject of conversation this month will be: What item do you still have from your childhood? See you at the table, Barb Ramsey. Walkers Club We will meet at Olivedale on Thursday, August 1 at 8:15a for a hike at Pickering Ponds. This will be a 3-4 mile hike over fairly level land. Bring water and a hiking stick if you want. Higher outdoor temperatures and moisture laden air, humidity, call for extra caution when venturing outdoors whether for a casual walk, mowing the lawn or working in the garden. The ability to cool off, to disseminate heat becomes less efficient with age as does the ability to retain bodily warmth during the colder months. It is important to keep outdoor exertion to short bouts during the hottest hours of the day. Take breaks, drink water, sit in the shade to avoid heat exhaustion, or worse heat stroke. Heat stroke is a life threatening condition with symptoms of high body temperature, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, nausea, light-headedness, dehydration, and fainting, which may be the first sign in older adults. So take precautions with the summer heat and stay cool., stay hydrated and take it easy in the sun! If you suspect heat stroke: move the person into shade. ***Wellness Shutdown*** Begins August 5 to August 16. There are no activities during this time in the downstairs area and the Wellness Center. During the shutdown the YMCA is available for a charge of $1.25, be sure to take your Olivedale Membership card or Silver Sneakers card

This is the annual covered dish and planning session. Please bring ideas for programs for the coming year. Election of officers will also be on the agenda. Please note time correction. For details, call or Coin Club The Olivedale Coin Club will meet on Tuesday, August 13 at 3:00p upstairs on the dining room side. Members are encouraged to bring their Indian Head Penny collections to the meeting for discussion. It will also give members a chance to buy, sell or trade Indian cents and Large cents from last month. August presents opportunity to plan details for fall activities, the 7th Anniversary party, Mystery Shop Hop and the all day sew-in retreat. Come join us every Thursday at 9a to noon and work on your UFO s (unfinished objects) and new projects. Military Veterans of Olivedale The Veterans August 5 meeting will be held at the Olivedale shelter house at 1:00p. This is due to remodeling of our regular meeting room. Departing at 8:30a and returning at 5:30p. OCTOBER TRIPS The Carlisle Inn Theatre presents their second theater season - Wanda Brunetter s new musical, Half-Stitched. Amish widow, Emma Yoder s first quilting class brings the most unlikely people together. A woman yearning for stability; a Page 9 couple at odds in their marriage; a widower hoping to find solace in finishing a quilt; a tough biker doing some creative community service; and a preacher's wife looking for relaxation when parish problems mount. This heartwarming story depicts the transformation of this mismatched group as they learn to transform scraps of material into beauty and their fragmented lives begin to take new shape. The Fun Bus departs Wednesday, October 23 at 8:30a.; returns 7:30p. $71 includes the show, Amish buffet at the Dutch Valley Restaurant. Roscoe Village A full day is planned for Friday, October 18 as we board the Fun Bus for the Roscoe Village Apple Butter Festival. Start the day with a tour & tasting at Raven s Glenn Winery followed by a full lunch buffet. Then to Coshocton for a horse-drawn Canal Boat ride into Ohio s colorful past with a glimpse of a 1-1/2 mile restored section of the Ohio- Erie Canal. Spend the afternoon walking through historic Roscoe Village during the Apple Butter Stirrin Festival and enjoy the day s entertainment. Note: This trip requires a moderate amount of walking. Departs at 8:00a and return at 6:30p. $78 per person includes winery tour, buffet lunch canal boat ride and admission to Roscoe Village. Brown Bag Treasure Tour Travel by motor coach to north-east Ohio on Wednesday, October 30 with visits to Lehman s General Store & Old-Fashioned Hardware, Everything Rubbermaid, P. Your day will begin with a stop at a food market where you will be greeted and led to their cooking school with refreshments followed by a cooking demonstration and more samples. You will then receive your brown bag to gather all the free gifts you will receive at each of our stops.
