3 August 2018 The Oak Leaf The Importance of Volunteers In a 501(c)3 organization like Olivedale, volunteers play a significant role. Olivedale is only as good as our volunteers. They are the backbone on which Olivedale continues to serve the community seniors providing education, socialization and wellness opportunities. The few Park employees that create programing, process memberships and wellness paperwork, maintain the building and grounds, clean, cook and instruct wellness classes may be limited by laws and budgets. They strive to maintain a Page 3 COMMUNICATION CORNER level of service that is expected and required by our membership. The additional manpower to fulfill Olivedale s fundraising efforts allowing it to continue operations at the current level into the future, require the use of many volunteers. While most members are retired and have less time to themselves then they did when they were working, each and every moment they give to Olivedale is vital and appreciated. Olivedale cannot operate without volunteers like the Board of Directors who are fundamental to the organization. Volunteers are the key to our success! Exercises that improve balance can help prevent falls. Often we are not fully aware that we may have weak balance until we try balance exercises. There are many ways to exercise balance but here are a few simple ones to try: One-Legged Balance - Start with this beginner's move, keeping a stable chair or a wall within an arm's reach. With feet together, pick up one foot with the knee facing forward or to the side. Hold the position with eyes open, then closed. Switch feet and repeat for four reps on each foot. Heel Toe Walks - Walk heel to toe for 20 steps. Steady yourself with a wall if you need a little extra support. Then gradually add deliberately walking by picking knees up higher and stepping out farther in a slow manner. When practicing balance make sure to have a stable surface near you such as a chair or a wall to hold onto. Safety first. Join one of our classes such as Silver sneakers classic, Yoga Stretch, or Strength & Balance to get more ideas or to have an instructor offer modifications. Pool Sign-Up for Fall Session, (August 27 -October 19) starts Monday, August 20. Please pick up registration slips at the front desk prior to sign up. Be sure all medical and waiver paperwork is
