The Redhawks hit the road for four straight road matches before returning home on Sunday, Sept. 23 (12 p.m.) to host Utah Valley in the final non-conference game of the season. Ritzman Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Aug ): Taylor Ritzman was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after recording a hat trick on Aug. 26 versus Eastern Washington. This is already the second hat trick and second such award for the Redhawks this season. Ritzman scored all three goals for Seattle U in the 3-0 victory. Two of her three goals were within 25 seconds of each other and three of her four goals this season have come within three minutes of entering the contest. Leaders of the WAC: After the second week of competition, the Redhawks lead the WAC in shots (74), assists (8), and shots per match (18.5). Individually, Taylor Ritzman leads the WAC in points (8), goals (4), points per match (4), and goals per match (2). Monique Escalera is tied for the lead in assists (3). As Seen on TV: Two Seattle U contests this season will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network (Friday, Sept. 14 at Oregon at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 16 at Oregon State at 12 p.m.).

During her 15 coaching seasons, she boasts 14 winning seasons, establishing her as the winningest coach in SU women s soccer history with a overall record and a.662 winning percentage prior to the 2012 season. She coached her 200th career win on Sept. 18, 2011 in a 3-1 victory over San Diego State University. Seattle University s former two-time NAIA All- American soccer player came home to her alma mater as the head coach of the Redhawks women s soccer program over a decade ago. She has coached the Redhawks to three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances (2004, 2006 and 2007). A 2004 Far West Coach of the Year, she boasts three NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II honorees, two All-Pacific Region and 18 Far West Region selections, three GNAC Players of the Year, eight GNAC all-conference team honorees and 27 players who have earned NAIA All-America accolades. Her teams have also boasted great academic success in her tenure, including a 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year, the 2011 NSCAA Team Academic Award, five CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans and 20 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine All-District selections. Woodward was honored at Seattle U s Annual Alumni Awards Celebration in April 2012, receiving the 2012 University Service Award. Scouting Portland State: The Vikings enter this weekend s matchup with a record this season. Despite the record, two of three losses were by just one goal, and all three were within two or less. Thus far, Portland State has faced three opponents that the Redhawks have faced or will face this season. In their first match of the season, they fell, 0-2, to St. Mary s College. They then headed to Corvallis, Ore. to face Oregon State, falling 1-2, before returning home to face Oregon and an 0-1 loss. Lainey Hulsizer is the Vikings starting goalie, recording six saves so far this season. Last Time Out: The Redhawks and Vikings last faced in the Viking Soccer Classic, hosted by Portland State, on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, with Seattle U coming out on top, 2-1. Ava Ames scored the gamewinning goal in the contest. The Redhawks hold a advantage over the Vikings since returning to Division I play. Busque Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Aug ): Melissa Busque was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after recording a hat trick on Aug. 19 versus St. Mary s. She scored the first two goals of the match and added a third on a corner 3

4 kick in the second half, leading to a 5-1 victory over the Gaels. Busque also co-led the team in shots in both matches over the weekend, with three (Aug. 17 vs. Washington) and five (Aug. 19 vs. St. Mary s), respectively. WAC Preseason Poll: The Redhawks were picked to finish third in the preseason Western Athletic Conference poll by the league s head coaches. Monique Escalera was also named to the WAC preseason all-conference team. Seattle U Joins the WAC: On July 1, 2012, 17 of Seattle U s 20 sports found a conference home, joining the Western Athletic Conference. The WAC is the sixth-oldest of the nation s 11 FBS (Division I-A) conferences. SU is one of 10 full members of the conference alongside current members Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, and Utah State, as well as fellow newcomers Denver, UT Arlington, UTSA, and Texas State. The WAC women s soccer tournament will take place from Thursday-Sunday Nov. 1-4 in Logan, Utah, with the top six of nine teams qualifying for the tournament. The team s first conference game will be Sept. 28 at UTSA and they will host their first conference home game versus Idaho on October 7. NCAA Division I: After 33 years since Seattle U last competed in a Division I conference, and after four years of NCAA Division I reclassification, SU returned to full NCAA Division I membership in August The Redhawks will now compete for conference championships and will be eligible for automatic bids to the NCAA tournament. Leaders of the Pack: Julia Besagno, Renee Vandermause, and Carlee Norquist will serve as team captains for the season. Woodward s 200th Win: Head coach Julie Woodward earned her 200th career win on Sept. 18 in SU s 3-1 victory over San Diego State. She is the No. 5 winningest coach in SU history in a single sport and the winningest women s soccer coach in program history. Schreiner Promoted to Associate Head Coach: On July 3, 2012, head coach Julie Woodward announced that assistant coach Rich Schreiner was promoted to associate head coach. The 2012 season will be his fifth year with the team, and he has been a major contributor in their transition back to NCAA Division I. Competition of the Year: On Sept. 2, 2011, the Redhawks topped then-no. 8 Portland, 2-0, marking the highest ranked opponent a Seattle U team has defeated since reclassifying back to Division I status. At the athletics department s end-of-the-year Awards Banquet, the team won the Competition of the Year 2012 Redhawk Women s Soccer Award for this victory. Looking Back at 2011: The team went in 2011, marking Woodward s 14th 10+ win season in 15 years. They said goodbye to six seniors - Taylor Fannin, Lauren Munechika, Madison Goverde, Kassandra Riozzi, Jordan Salisbury, and Brynn Watanabe - with a 2-1 overtime victory versus Montana on Senior Day. The team posted a record away from home, playing the majority of their games away from Championship Field (3-2 record at home). They outscored opponents overall and 16-9 in the second half alone. Academic Honors: The Seattle University women s soccer team earned the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the academic year. The squad combined for a 3.08 GPA in , one of 572 women s soccer programs across all division throughout the country to earn the award for posting a 3.0 or higher team GPA. Newcomers: Seattle U women s soccer adds eight newcomers to their team this season, including six freshmen, one redshirt freshman newcomer, and one transfer. Five are from the state of Washington, one is from California, one is from Hawaii, and one is from Quebec, Canada. Freshmen Sarah Coluccio (Seattle, Wash.), Stephanie Conard 4

5 (Everett, Wash.), Kelly Beck (Tacoma, Wash.), Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.), and Julia Moravec (Spokane, Wash.) are local products, freshman Natasha Howe hails from Mission Viejo, Calif., redshirt freshman Kristen Nakagawa is from Mililani, Hawaii, and senior Melissa Busque, who transferred from the University of Connecticut, is from St. Bruno, Quebec, Canada. Returners: The Redhawks return 14 letterwinners, including seven starters, losing four starters from last season. Redshirt senior Renee Vandermause, seniors Carlee Norquist and Taylor Bolibol, juniors Kat Prati, Julia Besagno, and Mary Hill, and sophomore Stephanie Verdoia are the starting returners for the Redhawks. Verdoia led all returning starters in 2011 with four goals, four assists (tied with Hill), 12 points, and 36 shots. The returning starters combined for nine goals, 12 assists, 30 points, and 91 shots in Season Preview: Goalkeepers: Redshirt freshman Aris Coover and redshirt sophomore Brittany Lott as well as newcomer, freshman Brianna Smallidge will compete for the open goalkeeper position. All three had impressive high school and club careers, but have not yet seen action for the Redhawks, so performances this past spring and leading up to the season will be a big indicator in who receives the starting role. Defenders: Despite losing Brynn Watanabe and Jordan Salisbury to graduation, the Redhawks starting backline will be strong and experienced, composed completely of returners from the 2011 roster. Renee Vandermause walked at graduation in June 2012, but will return for the 2012 season and continue to provide veteran experience for the defenders, as she has one year of eligibility remaining. Senior Carlee Norquist and juniors Monique Escalera and Mary Hill will also bring strength and stability to the defensive line. Sophomore Renae Russell and redshirt sophomore Alyssa Campagna will round out the list of returning defenders for Seattle U. Midfielders: Having at least one season together already under their belt, Seattle U returns their entire starting midfield. Now that they have at least one year of experience together, they can up their game and play at an even higher level. The Redhawks will also add several newcomers in the midfield that will contribute from the beginning. Starters Kat Prati, Julia Besagno, and Taylor Bolibol will provide upperclassmen leadership for the midfielders, combining for five goals and four assists in Returners Kiana Kraft, Taylor Ritzman, Heather Thomas, Jacqui Wallis, Chelsea Jennings, and Liana Heberer will also bring experience to the position. Despite the large number of returners, freshmen Kelly Beck and Stephanie Conard, redshirt freshman Kristen Nakagawa and senior transfer Melissa Busque will challenge the returners for spots in contests from the beginning of the season. Forwards: The forwards are a true mix of returning and incoming players, returning three players from last season and welcoming three new Redhawks at the forward position. Stephanie Verdoia, leading the team with four goals, four assists, and 12 total points in 2011 as a freshman, returns at starting forward. Juniors Ava Ames and Shawna Anderson, who each saw starting time in 2011, also return. Ames scored four goals in six starts and Anderson started five games, with a goal and an assist, competing in all 19 contests last season. Seattle U welcomes newcomers, freshmen Sarah Coluccio, Natasha Howe, and Julia Moravec who will compete and contribute for the Redhawks right away. Woodward Honored by SU Alumni Association: On April 17, 2012, head coach Julie Woodward was honored alongside five other outstanding SU alumni, at Seattle University s 27th Annual Alumni Awards Celebration. Woodward, a 1993 graduate of Seattle U, received the 2012 University Service Award. 5
