The Redhawks are riding a 13-game winning streak into the tournament, during which they ve allowed just four goals dating back to Sept. 20. SU recently completed a seven-game shutout streak during which they scored 25 consecutive unanswered goals. After facing Idaho for a home-and-away last weekend, they face the No. 4 Vandals for the fourth straight match in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament on Friday, Nov. 8 at 11:30 a.m. MT/10:30 a.m. PT. Kiana Kraft was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 28-Nov. 4), marking the seventh straight week that the Redhawks have earned at least one WAC nod (10 total this season). WAC Tournament: The 2013 WAC Tournament will be hosted by New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M on Nov. 8 and 10. During her 16 coaching seasons, she boasts 14 winning seasons, establishing her as the winningest coach in SU women s soccer history with a overall record and a.649 winning percentage following the 2012 season. She coached her 200th career win on Sept. 18, 2011 in a 3-1 victory over San Diego State University. Seattle University s former two-time NAIA All- American soccer player came home to her alma mater as the head coach of the Redhawks women s soccer program over a decade ago. She has coached the Redhawks to three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances (2004, 2006 and 2007). A 2004 Far West Coach of the Year, she boasts three NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II honorees, two All-Pacific Region and 18 Far West Region selections, three GNAC Players of the Year, eight GNAC all-conference team honorees and 27 players who have earned NAIA All-America accolades. Her teams have also boasted great academic success in her tenure, including a 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year, the 2011 NSCAA Team Academic Award, five CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans and 20 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine All-District selections. Redhawks Dominate All-Conference Honors: As voted upon by the league s seven head coaches, Stephanie Verdoia was named WAC Offensive Player of the Year and Julie Woodward was named WAC Coach of the Year. The Redhawks also had nine players named to the All-Conference First and Second Teams, the most of any league school, including four on the First Team (Verdoia, Julia Besagno, Monique Escalera, and Mary Hill) and five on the Second Team (Taylor Ritzman, Ava Ames, Natasha Howe, Kat Prati, Brianna Smallidge). Redhawks Clinch Regular Season Title: Following regular season play, Seattle U sits atop league standings with a perfect WAC record, officially clinching the WAC Regular Season Title. Two of a Kind: Both the Seattle U men s and women s soccer teams have secured the 2013 WAC Regular Season title and the No. 1 seed in their respective WAC tournaments. This brings Seattle U s tally of WAC Regular Season titles to three in just their second year in the conference after women s basketball completed the feat in First Time for Everything: Seattle U is just the fourth team in WAC history to finish league play with a perfect record and the first WAC team to ever win 12 conference games. Previous undefeated teams in WAC play include SMU (6-0-0 in 1997; in 2001), San Diego State (6-0-0 in 1998), and Utah State (7-0-0 in 2008). National and Regional Rankings: After moving into the top 10 five weeks ago, the Redhawks jump up four places 4

5 from last week into the No. 4 spot in the Nov. 5 edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women s West Regional Poll. The Redhawks are also receiving votes in the Nov. 4 edition of the Top Drawer Soccer national poll. Shutout Streak: The Redhawks recorded seven straight shutouts from Sept. 22 to Oct. 18. They also scored 25 consecutive unanswered goals after allowing a goal in the fifth minute vs. Grand Canyon on Sept. 20, not allowing another goal until the 51st minute vs. Bakersfield on Oct. 20. Kraft Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 28-Nov. 3): Kraft received her first career WAC Defensive Player of the Week honor, the 10th for the Redhawks in 2013, marking seven straight weeks in which SU received at least one WAC POW honoree. Kraft helped anchor the Seattle U defense that allowed just one goal in two matches vs. Idaho, as the Redhawks shut out the Vandals, 3-0, on Nov. 1, and earned a 3-1 victory on Nov. 3. The SU defense allowed Idaho just eight shots, four on goal, over the two matches. Kraft also helped the team offensively, scoring a goal and recording an assist over the weekend. To date, Kraft has recorded two goals and four assists for eight points, and 11 shots, seven on goal, while playing a key role in the team s seven-game shutout streak and current 13-game winning streak. Three Named to Academic All-District First Team: The Redhawks had three honorees named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team, including Stephanie Verdoia, Julia Besagno, and Jacqui Wallis. The honor recognizes top student-athletes for both their performances on the field and in the classroom and marked the first Academic All-District First Team honor for the program since reclassifying back to Division I. Last season, Verdoia and alumna Renee Vandermause were named to the Second Team, the program s first such Division I honor. Scouting No. 4 Idaho (4-15-0, WAC): With Bakersfield s loss to New Mexico State, 2-1, on Nov. 3, Idaho ensured a spot in the conference tournament. The Redhawks and Vandals will face off for the third straight time in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament, as Seattle U has come away with the win in the last two matches (3-0 on Nov. 1, 3-1 on Nov. 3). With a win over New Mexico State on Oct. 27, Idaho is 1-7 over their last eight matches. Alyssa Pease and Katie Baran lead UI with three goals apiece, while Pease has also recorded a team-high 24 shots, 13 on goal. In goal, Marina Siegl has made 18 starts and appearances in all 19 games, tallying 68 saves and a 1.67 GAA. Torell Stewart hsa made one start and 15 appearances, recording 38 saves and a 3.10 GAA. Each goalie has allowed 21 goals. Chelsie Breen was named First Team All-WAC while Nitalia Zuniga was named Second Team-All WAC for the Vandals. Scouting No. 2 Kansas City (11-8-1, WAC): UMKC finished league play winning seven of their last nine matches, including a 3-0 loss to SU at home on Oct. 27. The Redhawks also defeated the Kangaroos in Seattle, 3-0, on Sept. 27. Taylor Bare leads the team with 13 goals in 2013, tying Stephanie Verdoia for the WAC-lead, and was recently named WAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3. In league play, Nina Tzianos has made 61 saves in 12 appearances while Megan Goetzinger has made one save in 45 minutes of action. Bare was named First Team All- WAC, while Alyssa Elver and Kaely Tott were named Second Team All-WAC. Scouting No. 3 Utah Valley (9-9-1, WAC): Utah Valley will play their second straight match vs. Kansas City in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament, after falling to the Kangaroos, 3-0, on Nov. 3 to close the regular season. Prior to that match, the Wolverines had won their past three matches at Idaho and New Mexico State and versus Grand Canyon. Haley Curtis and Natalie Baker have recorded a team-high seven goals apiece, while Curtis adds seven assists for Utah Valley. Lauren Sack has made 90 saves in 18 starts in goal, recording a 1.52 GAA while Jessica Duffin has mdae nine saves in one start and four appearances, allowing three goals. Sack was named WAC Defensive Player of the Year, also named First Team All-WAC alongside Baker, Curtis, and Lexi Dunn. Idaho (11/3): Despite Idaho scoring in the first minute of play, Seattle U defeated the Vandals, 3-1, to complete their perfect 12-0 record in Western Athletic Conference play. As the WAC Regular Season Champions, Seattle U enters next weekend s WAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. Currently on a 13-game winning streak, the Redhawks recorded 10 shutouts throughout the regular season. Seattle U is just the fourth team in WAC history to finish conference play undefeated and the first WAC team to ever win 12 conference games. SMU went in 1997 and in 2001, San Diego State went in 1998, and Utah State went in Just 59 seconds into the game, Katie Baran gave the Vandals the early 1-0 lead with a header from the right side of the post, assisted by Kavita Battan. In the 25th minute, Kiana Kraft equalized the score for the Redhawks, placing the ball in the top of the box past the Idaho goalie. Despite two late first half shots by Jacqui Wallis and Stephanie Verdoia, the score remained tied at the half, 1-1. Seattle U took the lead for good in the 54th minute on an own goal, adding a third goal for insurance in the 78th minute as Kelly Beck played the ball to Julia Besagno directly in front of the box, coming away with the 3-1 win. The Redhawks outshot the Vandals, 17-4, as Verdoia led SU with four shots, two on goal. In goal, Brianna Smallidge made two saves for Seattle U while Marina Siegl made four saves in the start for Idaho and Torell Stewart also made an ap- 5

6 pearance for the Vandals. Idaho (11/1): Seattle U took control of the match early and kept offensive control as they defeated Idaho, 3-0, in their 10th shutout of the season to extend their winning streak to 12 games. The Redhawks controlled possession early, with a shot on goal by Stephanie Verdoia in the first minute of play, as she added another in the 8th minute, which sailed wide. In the 28th minute, Verdoia crossed the ball to Taylor Ritzman directly in front of the net, as Idaho goalkeeper Marina Siegl came out and to the right of the goal, to put SU ahead, 1-0. In similar fashion, in the 38th minute, Ritzman crossed to Natasha Howe who slipped the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead going into halftime. SU s next best chances to score came in the 50th minute as Verdoia s shot was blocked and in the 53rd minute as her next shot sailed wide.in the 71st minute, Verdoia broke through with her team-leading 13th goal of the season for insurance, assisted by Heather Thomas and Kiana Kraft, as the Redhawks topped the Vandals, 3-0. Prior to the match, this year s graduating class was honored as Thomas, Ava Ames, Kat Prati, Julia Besagno, Monique Escalera, Alyssa Campagna, Jacqui Wallis, and Mary Hill played their final home match in Seattle U uniform.in goal, Brianna Smallidge earned the win in the team s 10th shutout of the season, while Siegl made two saves in the start for Idaho, and Torell Stewart made one save in the appearance for the Vandals. As a team, the Redhawks outshot the Vandals, 15-4, as Verdoia added a teamhigh eight shots, tying her career-high vs. Louisiana Tech in the 2012 WAC Tournament (Nov. 1, 2012) and earlier this season vs. New Mexico State (Sept. 29, 2013). Besagno Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct ): Julia Besagno received her first career WAC Player of the Week nod as she scored three goals in a pair of wins at New Mexico State (2-1 in 2OT on Oct. 25) and Kansas City (3-0 on Oct. 27). She scored two goals, including the game-winner, at UMKC, her first career two-goal match, as well as the first goal at NMSU. She tallied four shots, three on goal, with three goals and six points over the weekend. College Sports Madness also named Besagno WAC Player of the Week. Verdoia Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct ): Verdoia received her third such honor of the season, fourth of her career, as she scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 3-0 win vs. Utah Valley on Oct. 18. She also assisted the game-winner vs. Bakersfield on Oct. 20. Through two matches, she tallied six shots, four on goal, two goals, one assist, and five points. As of Oct. 21, she had scored a goal or recorded an assist in 11 of SU s 15 matches this season. Verdoia was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Verdoia Named to CollegeSoccer360 Primetime Honor Roll (Oct ): Verdoia was named to the CollegeSoccer360 Primetime Performers Honor Roll, a list of 11 top DI women s soccer performers from across the country including student-athletes from Duke, Cal Poly, Florida, Portland State, Virginia, UTSA, Penn State, Iowa State, Mississippi, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and more. Let There Be Light: Championship Field, the home of Seattle U men s and women s soccer, recently received a significant enhancement in the form of lights. The women s soccer program s first ever match under the lights was held on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. vs. Utah Valley. Hill Named WAC Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 7-13): Mary Hill has been named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct This is Hill s first such career honor, bringing SU s 2013 total to seven, and marking the fourth straight week in which the Redhawks have received at least one honoree. Hill assisted Stephanie Verdoia s second goal of the match in the team s 5-0 shutout at Grand Canyon on Oct. 11, also anchoring the SU defense that allowed only one shot on goal in the win. She also has been a key starter for the Redhawk backline which has recorded six straight shutouts. Smallidge Named WAC Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 30-Oct. 6): Brianna Smallidge was named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, her second honor of the season and her career (also named for week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, 2013). Marking the third straight week in which SU has received at least one honoree, Smallidge brings the Redhawks 2013 total to six. Smallidge recorded all 180 minutes in goal in the Redhawks pair of 2-0 shutout victories at Bakersfield and Utah Valley. She registered nine total saves in the two matches, five on Friday and four on Sunday, and a perfect save percentage. These matches marked four complete shutouts for Smallidge thus far in Smallidge was also named WAC Women s Soccer Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Verdoia and Escalera Named WAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week (Sept ): Verdoia and Escalera were named WAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, a career first for Escalera and the third of Verdoia s career, including second straight, bringing Seattle U s 2013 total to five. Over the weekend, Verdoia, a junior forward, scored three goals, two versus New Mexico State, also recording three assists. She scored game-winning goals in both 3-0 shutouts versus Kansas City and NMSU, tallying a season high eight shots versus the Aggies. Combined, she recorded 13 shots, five on goal, three goals, three assists, and nine points in the two matches. Escalera, a senior defender, led the Seattle U defense to a pair of 3-0 shutout WAC 6

7 wins vs. Kansas City and New Mexico State. Escalera led the Redhawk backline who allowed just six shots, one on goal, in two matches over the weekend. This season, Escalera has started all 10 matches, recording four shots of her own, two on goal. Verdoia was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for the second straight week. Verdoia Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Sept ): Stephanie Verdoia was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the second of her career, also named for the week of Oct. 1-7, Over the weekend, she recorded seven shots, four on goal, also recording a goal versus Cal Poly and three total assists in the team s victories over Grand Canyon and Cal Poly. She also led the team with four shots vs. Grand Canyon on Sept. 20 and set up Julia Besagno s goal on a penalty kick, getting pulled down in the box versus the Mustangs on Sept. 22. She was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Howe and Smallidge Named WAC Players of the Week (Aug. 26-Sept. 1): Natasha Howe and Brianna Smallidge were named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, a career first for both and SU s first ever WAC Defensive Player of the Week nod. Howe, in just her third collegiate match, came in off the bench to score the game-winner in overtime vs. Boise State on Aug. 30 in the Redhawks 2-1 win. Howe was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Smallidge earned her second win of the season vs. the Broncos, allowing just one goal, while making three saves for a.750 save percentage, her second highest of the season thus far. Stephanie Verdoia was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Julia Besagno was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Verdoia, Besagno, and Mary Hill were also named Preseason All-Conference. College Sports Madness Names Preseason All-WAC Teams: College Sports Madness named Stephanie Verdoia the WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and named Julie Woodward Coach of the Year. CSM also named Verdoia, Julia Besagno, Monique Escalera, Mary Hill, and Brianna Smallidge to the Preseason First Team All-WAC and named Julia Moravec to the Preseason Second Team All-WAC. Carlee Norquist Joins Staff: Recent Seattle U graduate and former member of the women s soccer team, Carlee Norquist, will serve as the team s Director of Operations while completing the Masters of Sports Administration and Leadership (MSAL) program at SU. NCAA Division I Rankings: In 2012, among all Division I women s soccer players, Stephanie Verdoia tied for 53rd in game-winning goals (4), tied for 77th in total goals (10), and tied for 78th in goals per game (.500) Recap: The Seattle University women s soccer team (9-9-2, 3-3-2), clinching a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in their first year in the conference, topped Louisiana Tech, 2-1, in the first round before falling to eventual tournament winner, Utah State, in the semifinals, 2-1. Stephanie Verdoia and Melissa Busque were named to the WAC All- Tournament Team. The Redhawks said goodbye to six student-athletes who played their final contests in Seattle U uniform in 2012 and celebrate a year in which they recorded their first three NCAA Division I hat tricks, as well as their first three WAC Offensive Player of the Week nods. Verdoia and Busque were also named First-Team All-WAC and Julia Besagno was named to the Second Team. Verdoia and Renee Vandermause were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Second Team, NCAA Division I District VIII. Leaders of the Pack: Julia Besagno and Stephanie Verdoia will serve as this year s team captains. In With the New: The Redhawks welcome three newcomers to this year s squad: Emily Castellano (Covina, Calif.), Rosalie Sittauer (Everett, Wash.), and Mariah O Neil (Tumwater, Wash.) The New WAC: With the addition of men s swimming & diving and men s soccer to the Western Athletic Conference, 19 of Seattle U s 20 sports now have a conference home in the WAC. Alongside Idaho and New Mexico State, SU welcomes six newcomers to the conference including Bakersfield, Utah Valley, Kansas City (UMKC), Chicago State, Grand Canyon, and UTPA (Texas-Pan American). 7
