Seattle U Hosts UNLV, Grand Canyon in WAC Home Openers: After opening their 2014 WAC schedule at Utah Valley with a 1-1 draw on Oct. 4, Seattle U men s soccer returns home to host UNLV in their Western Athletic Conference home opener on Oct. 10 and Grand Canyon on Oct. 12 to close out the weekend. Both matches will be part of a pair of doubleheaders with the Seattle U women s soccer team, with the SU women hosting Grand Canyon on Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Bakersfield on Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. Links to live stats and video for the weekend will be on the men s soccer schedule page at GoSeattleU.com. National Rankings: The Redhawks have been ranked in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 twice this season, including No. 22 on Sept. 2 and No. 24 on Sept. 30. These are the program s first two national rankings since reclassifying back to NCAA Division I. Best of the West: In the Oct. 7 edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire Men s Soccer West Regional rankings, five of the top 10 teams are members of the Western Athletic Conference. Seattle U has earned the top spot while Air Force (2nd), Bakersfield (4th), UNLV (6th), and Utah Valley (8th) are also ranked regionally. Scouting UNLV (7-2-1, WAC): The Rebels opened up WAC play last weekend with a 3-0 win vs. Grand Canyon in Las Vegas but have won only two of their last five dating back to Sept 14. UNLV hits the road this weekend after playing seven of 10 matches in 2014 thus far at home and only two true road matches (the third was a neutral site match). Salvador Bernal has scored a team-high six goals and recorded 14 points through the first 10 games while Ryan Harding has made nine of 10 starts in goal, named WAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 6 for last weekend s shutout. In 2013, SU defeated UNLV in Seattle, 2-1 in 2OT, on Oct.11 and in Las Vegas, 2-0, on Oct. 18 en route to a pair of WAC titles.

The 2013 campaign was one of the most successful in program history as Fewing was named Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, taking the Redhawks from an start to winning both the WAC Regular Season and Tournament titles. With the tournament win, the team became Seattle U s first men s team to qualify for an NCAA DI tournament since March 1969 and the first to win an NCAA DI tournament game since March 1964 with a 2-1 come-from-behind First Round win at Creighton on Nov. 21. He helped develop both senior forward Miguel Gonzalez, named WAC Offensive Player of the Year, and senior goalkeeper Jake Feener, who led the nation in DI saves and saves per game throughout the entire 2013 season. Fewing was the head coach of the Seattle University men s soccer team from 1988 through the 2005 season, when he accumulated a record of (.628) during his 18 seasons at the helm. He led Seattle U to the 1997 NAIA National Championship and the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship. Most recently, Fewing was the head coach of the Kitsap Pumas of the Professional Development League (PDL) in 2010 and 2011, helping the Pumas win the 2011 PDL National Championship. He co-authored the book Coaching Principles for Development of Championship Teams, and he has been an analyst during the television broadcasts of Seattle Sounders FC matches. Fewing was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1997 and NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in He earned regional coach of the year honors five times and Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) coach of the year recognition three times. He guided the men s soccer program through the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, posting a (.745) record in five seasons at the NCAA Division II level. Featured Student-Athletes Aug Jeff Rose Sept Chase Hanson Scouting Grand Canyon (2-6-1, WAC): Grand Canyon has earned wins vs. Pacific, 3-2, on Sept. 6 and at Sacramento State, 1-0 in OT, on Sept. 19 but are on a four-game winless streak coming into this weekend as they face Utah Valley before making the trip to Seattle. Last weekend, the Lopes opened up WAC play with a 3-0 loss at UNLV on Oct. 5. Alberto Sanchez Garcia and Niki Jackson lead the team with two goals apiece while Kendyl Day and Luca Licciardi have shared time in goal this season. In the teams last meeting, the Redhawks earned a 3-0 win in Seattle on Oct. 27,

The women s tournament will take place on Nov. 6-7, 9 while the men s tournament will take place the following weekend on Nov , 16. Cystic Fibrosis Game Set For Oct. 18: The Redhawks match vs. Utah Valley on Oct. 18 will be the team s annual Cystic Fibrosis game and fans will receive a ticket discount ($3 tickets) by wearing blue to the match. Jersey Retirement: On Sept. 13, the 2014 Redhawk men s Soccer men s soccer program retired two jersey numbers - #3 for Tom Hardy, the 1997 NAIA National Player of the Year and #9 for Bobby McAlister, the 2004 NCAA Divsion I National Player of the Year. Seattle U Chosen as Preseason WAC Title Winners: In a vote by the league s 10 head coaches, the Redhawks were picked to repeat their 2014 WAC men s socer championship from just a season ago. College Sports Madness Names Preseason All-WAC Teams: CSM named Ian Hines-Ike and Kyle Bjornethun to the Preseason First Team and Hamza Haddadi and Shane Mahvi to the Preseason Second Team. Head coach Pete Fewing was also named Preseason WAC Coach of the Year. Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic: Jeff Rose, Ian Hines-Ike, Shane Haworth, and Brady Ballew were named to the All-Tournament Team of College of Charleston s Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic (Aug. 29, 31). Ballew was named Tournament MVP. Feener, Gonzalez, Hines-Ike, and Bjornethun were named to the WAC All-Tournament Team while Feener was named MVP. Michael Roberts was named Capital One Academic All-District First Team, NCAA Division I District VIII was the Redhawks first year in the WAC after the league reinstated men s soccer for the first time since WAC Tournament: The 2014 WAC Tournament will be hosted by Seattle U at Championship Field on Nov , 16. At the conclusion of the six-team tournament, the winner will receive the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The previous weekend, Seattle U will also host the WAC women s soccer tournament on Nov. 6-7, Recap: Seattle U won the WAC regular season and tournament titles with an undefeated WAC record. SU made program history with the team s first NCAA Division I tournament appearance and win. The win at Creighton on Nov. 21 marked the first Redhawk men s team to win an NCAA DI tournament game since men s basketball on Mar. 14, At the end of the season, the team earned a spot at No. 25 in the men s DI Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 poll.
