(206) 398-GOSU Redhawks Travel to Face West Region Foes for Second Straight Week: Seattle University men s soccer (3-8-2, WAC) recently moved into sole possession of first place in the western region of the Western Athletic Conference standings. Defeating UNLV, 2-1, in 2OT and tying Bakersfield, 2-2, last weekend, SU is one of just two WAC teams to have not yet suffered a conference loss (Air Force is in league play). Jake Feener, leading the nation, and Miguel Gonzalez both rank in the top 10 in NCAA Division I saves and goals, respectively. NCAA Division I Leaders: As of Oct. 14, SU goalkeeper Jake Feener is leading the nation in saves (91) and ranks second in saves per game (7.00). Miguel Gonzalez is tied for 7th in total goals (9) and tied for 13th in goals per game (0.69). Scouting UNLV (3-8-0, WAC): Previously tied with Seattle U for the first place spot in the WAC west standings, the Redhawks downed the Rebels in 2OT on Oct. 11 to take sole possession of the top spot. In the second game on the weekend, UNLV suffered a loss at San Jose State, 1-0, on Oct. 13. Rodrigo Fuentes remains as leader of the team with four goals, three assists, 11 points, and 25 shots, while Ryan Harding (27 saves) and Joe Vitale (14 saves) have shared time in goal. Rich Ryerson, a 1987 UNLV alum, is in his fourth season at the helm. Scouting Bakersfield (3-6-2, WAC): Bakersfield snapped a six-game winless streak with a 4-3 win at San Jose State on Oct. 11 before tying the Redhawks at Championship Field, 2-2, in Oct. 13. The Roadrunners will have a second chance at both teams this weekend, this time on their home pitch. Eduardo Calzada leads the team with four goals, eight points, and 25 shots, 10 on goal thus far in 2013, while Anthony Perez has recorded 44 saves in nine starts in goal. Nicolas Clever has recorded six saves in two starts in goal. Simon Tobin brings 26 years of experience as head coach of CSUB. Bakersfield (5) Air Force (2) UNLV San Jose State Kansas City Seattle U Grand Canyon (1) Houston Baptist 12 head coach PETER FEWING 20th season/washington 84 Pete Fewing begins his second year as head coach of the men s soccer team in Division I play and 20th season overall at Seattle U. In his first year back as head coach of the Redhawks, the team played in the MPSF conference, as well as taking on strong opponents such as Portland, Gonzaga, UW, and nationally-ranked UC Santa Barbara and New Mexico. Marshall Kosaka earned Second team All-MPSF honors, and Jose Merlo was recognized for honorable mention all-conference. Six members of the team received MPSF All-Academic Honors, a testament to Fewing s emphasis on academics along with athletics. Fewing was the head coach of the Seattle University men s soccer team from 1988 through the 2005 season, when he accumulated a record of (.628) during his 18 seasons at the helm. He led Seattle U to the 1997 NAIA National Championship and the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship. Most recently, Fewing was the head coach of the Kitsap Pumas of the Professional Development League (PDL) in 2010 and 2011, helping the Pumas win the 2011 PDL National Championship. He co-authored the book Coaching Principles for Development of Championship Teams, and he has been an analyst during the television broadcasts of Seattle Sounders FC matches. Fewing was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1997 and NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in He earned regional coach of the year honors five times and Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) coach of the year recognition three times. He guided the men s soccer program through the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, posting a (.745) record in five seasons at the NCAA Division II level. shutout at San Jose State to open conference play. Let There Be Light: Championship Field, the home of Seattle U men s and women s soccer, recently received a significant enhancement in the form of field lights. The installation of lights took place throughout early fall 2013, with the first ever match at Championship Field under the lights vs. No. 3 Washington on Tuesday, Oct. 8, Redhawk men s Soccer Bakersfield (10/13): Seattle U found themselves down early but fought back and battled preseason WAC favorite, Bakersfield, to a double overtime draw, 2-2. In the fifth minute, David Velasquez broke through for the Roadrunners, giving them the early lead with a ball from the left side to the top right back of the net. In the 26th minute, Miguel Gonzalez worked the ball past the keeper s right side, evening the score on a cross by Hamza Haddadi. The score even, 1-1, at the half, the Redhawks had their next best chance to take the lead on a shot by Jeff Rose in the 50th minute that hit the post, appearing to nearly make its way into the net. Justice Duerksen added a similarly close shot in the 55th minute as the ball bounced off the keeper s hand over the goal. In the 3

4 69th minute, Bakersfield regained the lead on a goal by Manny Carrillo off of a free kick by Giovanni Godoy. Just three minutes later, in the 72nd minute, Seattle U would again even the score on a penalty kick by Gonzalez, his team-leading ninth goal of the season and second goal of the match. Neither team would be able to add to their tally for the remainder of regulation and the Redhawks took their second game of the weekend into overtime. Each goalie recorded at least one save in the first overtime period, but neither team was able to capitalize on chances, as the match went into a second overtime period. The Roadrunners and Redhawks traded shots, two apiece, in the second overtime, but the match ended in a 2-2 draw. With the tie, Seattle U remains undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play as they have won or tied three of their last four matches. Gonzalez took eight shots for Seattle U, just one away from tying his career high nine shots in his first match as a Redhawk on August 24, 2012 vs. Cal Poly. Duerksen added a career high four shots for SU. In goal, Jake Feener made eight saves, increasing his NCAA Division I leading total to 91, while Anthony Perez also made eight saves in goal. UNLV (10/11): The Redhawks took WAC foe UNLV into double overtime, defeating the Rebels, 2-1, on Jonathan Massimino s first career goal. The Redhawks best early chance to score came at the end of the first half, in the 44th minute as Miguel Gonzalez shot back-to-back headers towards the goal, but UNLV goalkeeper Ryan Harding came up with key saves. In the 51st minute, Salvador Bernal put UNLV ahead on a cross by Julian Portugal, lining up and shooting the ball straight from the middle. In the 69th minute, Seattle U evened the score, 1-1, on the first career goal by Ian Hines-Ike off a free kick. Gonzalez added two more late shots in the second half, but could not sink them into the goal, as the Redhawks forced their fifth overtime match of the season. Neither team able to score through the first overtime, Gonzalez and Kyle Bjornethun took the only two shots of the period. The Redhawks outshooting the Rebels, 5-1, in the second overtime period, Massimino broke through in the 109th minute on a cross by Gonzalez for the game-winning goal. Gonzalez led the Redhawks with five shots, two on goal, while Hines-Ike notched four shots for SU. As a team, SU outshot UNLV, In goal, Jake Feener made eight saves, allowing one goal, while Harding made seven saves, allowing both goals, including the game-winner. No. 3 Washington (10/8): SU men s soccer held No. 3 Washington scoreless through halftime but a pair of second half goals by UW s Josh Heard lifted the Huskies over the Redhawks, 2-0. A historic night for Seattle U, this match marked the first ever game under the lights at Championship Field, as the light installation project was recently completed. The Redhawks outshooting the Huskies, 8-4, in the first half, the contest remained even throughout the opening period of play. One of SU s best opportunities to score came in the 13th minute on a shot by Miguel Gonzalez that was saved by Husky goalkeeper Ryan Herman. After the halftime break, Washington broke through in the 68th minute with a cross from Darwin Jones to Heard, which would prove to be the game-winning goal. Less than 10 minutes later, in the 77th minute, Heard would strike again with a goal for insurance, this time assisted by Andy Thoma. Gonzalez and Ian Hines-Ike led the Redhawks with three shots apiece while, as a team, SU outshot UW, In goal, Jake Feener recorded all 90 minutes, notching one save, while Herman made three saves for the Dawgs. Prior to the match, John Meisenbach and his wife Ginny were honored by the Seattle U athletic department for their generous donations and support, instrumental in spearheading the process of installing lights at Championship Field. They were joined on field by Director of Athletics Bill Hogan and Seattle U Executive Vice President Tim Leary. San Jose State (10/5): The team earned their first ever Western Athletic Conference win with a 4-0 shutout at San Jose State to open their conference schedule. Miguel Gonzalez put the Redhawks ahead, scoring what would be the game-winning winning goal in the 23rd minute of the match on a long through-ball, beating SJSU keeper Emmanuel Espinosa high to the far post. Ian Hines-Ike was credited with the assist Just over three minutes later, Brady Ballew scored his second goal of the season in the 26th minute as Justice Duerksen sent a long pass to Ballew, who dribbled into the box and sailed the ball past the keeper near the low far post. Leading 2-0 at the half, the Redhawks added to their tally on another pair of goals just 48 seconds apart. Hamza Haddadi scored his first goal of the season on a long through ball from Kyle Bjornethun to put the Redhawks ahead, 3-0, in the 74th minute. In the 75th minute, Gonzalez added his second goal of the game, his seventh of the season, on a penalty kick to insure the 4-0 Seattle U win. Haddadi and Gonzalez led SU with five shots apiece, three on frame, as the Redhawks outshot the Spartans, Hines-Ike and Bjornethun s assists marked firsts in each of their collegiate careers. In goal, Jake Feener made eight saves for the Redhawks, still leading the nation in NCAA Division I saves, while Espinosa made three saves, allowing all four goals for the Spartans. This is Seattle U s first shutout of the season as they have won two of their last three matches, also defeating Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2, in overtime on Sept. 22. Gonzaga (9/28): Seattle University men s soccer battled back with a late goal but could not even the score as they fell, 2-1, at Gonzaga, in their second to final non-conference competition of the season. The two teams played to a scoreless tie through halftime despite early scoring opportunities for the Redhawks. In the 3rd minute, Hamza Haddadi went one-on-one with the Gonzaga goalie with a saved shot and seconds later Ian Hines-Ike sailed the ball at the goal once more. Later in the half, Haddadi and Hines-Ike each added a shot apiece, both of which sailed high above the goal. Following halftime, Gonzaga broke through in the 55th minute as Jakob Granlund scored what would be the winning goal on an assist by Nick Hamer. In the 68th minute, Clark Phillips increased the Bulldog lead, 2-0, tapping the ball into an open right side net. Lars Ludwigs was credited with the assist. In the 78th minute, Michael Roberts narrowed the score, 2-1 dribbling down the left side and taking the shot from 12 yards out towards the left post. Renato Bandeira earned the assist on Robert s third goal of the season. Despite the late goal, Seattle U fell 2-1 at Gonzaga. Haddadi led SU with three shots, two on goal while Hines- Ike added two goals for the Redhawks. Overall, the Zags outshot the Redhawks, In goal, Jake Feener made nine saves in the complete game for Seattle U while Ryan Caballero made three saves in the win for Gonzaga. 4

5 Florida Gulf Coast (9/22): Seattle University men s soccer found themselves down early, but fought back and earned their first win of the season in overtime, 3-2, versus Florida Gulf Coast. In the 35th minute, Florida Gulf Coast took the lead, as Xavier Silva scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Rodrigo Saravia who took the free kick. A little over two minutes later, in the 37th minute, Michael Roberts equalized the score with a kick just to the left of the goalkeeper, sailing the ball into the back of the net. In the 41st minute, FGCU regained the lead as Silva passed the ball to Henry Penagos on the left side of the goal, who then netted the ball. As the Redhawks trailed at half, in the 50th minute, Justice Duerksen scored his first collegiate goal on an assist by Bobby Segal. Neither team was able to add to their tally, as the Redhawks recorded their fourth overtime game in eight games thus far in With no shots taken in the overtime period, in the 100th minute, Brady Ballew scored his first goal of the season, the golden goal, assisted by Hamza Haddadi as the Redhawks earned their first win of the season. Ian Hines-Ike recorded a team-high four shots for Seattle U, as Miguel Gonzalez added three. As a team, shots were nearly even, with Florida Gulf Coast narrowly outshooting Seattle U, In goal, Jake Feener recorded four saves in the complete game win while Nathan Ingham made five saves in goal for FGCU. Cameron Rohani and Duerksen made their first collegiate starts, as Segal made his first appearance of the season. Georgia State (9/20): In their regular season home opener, Seattle University men s soccer trailed early and, despite a goal in the second half, the Redhawks fell 2-1 to Georgia State. In the 4th minute, Georgia State s Jamal Keene scored what would be the winning goal, kicking the ball directly over SU goalie Jake Feener s head. Miguel Gonzalez added a shot for the Redhawks but they trailed at the half, 1-0. In the 73rd minute, GSU increased their lead, as Eddie Wilding kicked the ball in from about 25 yards out as they took the 2-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Gonzalez narrowed the score, dribbling down the left side and kicking the ball into the left side of the net past the goalkeeper. SU, however, could not add to their total as they were defeated, 2-1, in their regular season home opener. Justice Duerksen and Sarkis Shaginian made their first collegiate appearances for Seattle U. As a team, Georgia State outshot SU, In goal, Feener made four saves while CJ Cochran made two for Georgia State. Prior to the match, the Seattle U Athletics Department honored head coach Pete Fewing, who is in his 20th season overall as head coach of the Redhawks. Gonzalez Named GoSeattleU.com Student- Athlete of the Week (Sept. 9-15): Miguel Gonzalez received the honor, the team s first in 2013, after scoring both goals for the Redhawks over the weekend at Oregon State and Portland. As of Sept. 17, he has recorded a team-high four goals, already tying his goal total from Portland (9/15): In the team s final match of a six game season-opening road swing, Portland scored early and, despite tying the game, the Redhawks fell, 2-1. In the 7th minute, Michael Escobar scored his first goal of the season for UP, assisted by Eddie Sanchez as he took one shot and sunk the ball into the right side of the goal from about 22 yards out. Over the next 10 minutes, the Redhawks outshot the Pilots, 7-4, as Miguel Gonzalez broke away past two defenders in the 17th minute and kicked the ball in from 19 yards out to tie the game, 1-1. Hamza Haddadi was credited with the assist. A tie game until the 38th minute, Hugo Rhoads scored what would be the winning goal off a corner kick by Escobar. The Pilots kept the 2-1 lead into halftime and through a scoreless second half, coming away with the win. Three different Redhawks led the team with two shots apiece while Jamie Velasco led the Pilots with five shots, two on goal. As a team, Portland outshot Seattle U, In goal, Jake Feener made 14 saves in the complete game for SU, while Justin Baarts notched the win for Portland, making four saves. Oregon State (9/13): Seattle University men s soccer played Oregon State to overtime, their second straight such contest, but the Redhawks fell, 2-1, on a golden goal by OSU s Brenden Anderson. In the 26th minute, Miguel Gonzalez was able to break through on his second of two straight shots, with a header into the box, assisted by Hamza Haddadi and Chase Hanson to put the Redhawks ahead, 1-0. Less than two minutes later, in the 28th minute, Khiry Shelton, with the assist by Devonte Small, evened the score for the Beavers with a shot over SU goalkeeper Jake Feener into the side netting. The score remained 1-1 through the halftime break and to the end of the regulation buzzer, as the Redhawks recorded their second straight overtime contest, third overall of Near the end of overtime, in the 100th minute, Anderson received the pass from Will Seymore, heading the ball into the goal to give Oregon State the 2-1 win. Feener represented Seattle U in goal for the complete game, recording eight saves. Matt Bersano made three saves in goal for the Beavers. Gonzalez led the Redhawks with seven shots, four on goal. Overall, Oregon State outshot Seattle U, Sacramento State (9/8): With three prior shots in the first half, in the 33rd minute, Miguel Gonzalez launched the ball from just past midfield over Sacramento State goalkeeper Cesar Castillo s head to put the Redhawks ahead, 1-0. Just after halftime, in the 47th minute, Gabe Silveira tied the game, 1-1, with a shot from 10 yards out into the bottom right corner. Seattle U had their best opportunity to take the lead in the 52nd minute, as back-to-backto-back shots by Darrell Hannah, Hamza Haddadi and Jeff Rose resulted in a save and two blocks, respectively. Neither side was able to score further in regulation, sending the game into overtime, the second such contest for the Redhawks this season. Only three Sacramento State shots resulted from the first overtime, with a purely defensive game in the second overtime, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the Redhawks first draw this season. Jake Feener represented Seattle U in goal for all 110 minutes, making eight saves, while Castillo made four saves in goal for the Hornets. Gonzalez led Seattle U with four shots, three on goal, while Chimdum Mez led Sacramento State with six shots, two on goal. The Hornets outshot the Redhawks, 20-11, in the match. Gonzalez and Feener were named to the Copa De Causeway All-Tournament team, the twosite tournament hosted by UC Davis and Sacramento State over the weekend. Miguel Gonzalez added a shot 16 seconds later, saved by Aggie goalkeeper Omar Zeenni. 5

6 Ian Hines-Ike added another shot for the Redhawks, which went over the goal, but the score remained 1-0 at the halftime break. The Aggies opened up the second half with back-to-back shots, both sailing over the goal, while Hamza Haddadi, Jonathan Massimino, and Austin Sweeney added shots later in the half for SU, but UC Davis came away with the 1-0 win. Five different Redhawks led the team with one shot apiece, while Alex Aguiar led the Aggies with four shots as UC Davis outshot Seattle U, In goal, Jake Feener made four saves for Seattle U while Zeenni made two saves for UC Davis. Delaware (9/1): The Redhawks took the early lead, 1-0, in the third minute as Jeff Rose took a shot seven yards out from center, sinking the ball into the left side for his first career goal. The Blue Hens tied the game in the 12th minute as Guillermo Delgado scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Roberto Gimenez and Jaime Martinez, from the top left corner. Taking their first lead, Delaware s Prince Nartey scored on a penalty kick in the 21st minute to lead, 2-1, which remained the halftime score. Seattle U evened the score at two in the 69th minute as Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) headed the ball into the net off a corner kick. The game going into overtime, in the 99th minute, Delaware s Evan Reed headed the ball into the net off a corner kick by Kyle Nuel, the golden goal, as the Blue Hens took the 3-2 victory. Kyle Bjornethun, Shane Mahvi, Ian Hines-Ike, Rose, Jonathan Massimino, Brandon Marquez, Jordan Bingham, and Darrell Hannah all saw their first collegiate action over the weekend. UMBC (8/30): Early in the match, in the 10th minute, Pete Caringi drove in his first goal of the season for the Retrievers to give UMBC the early lead, 1-0. The goal, assisted by Stephen Ho and Gaeton Caltabiano resulted from a long pass from Caltabiano to Ho, who followed it up with a step and leading pass to Caringi. The Retrievers would add to their score, 2-0, at the 24 minute mark as Caringi scored again, this time assisted on a dish by Kadeem Dacres. In the 38th minute, Miguel Gonzalez would add a goal for the Redhawks to narrow the score, 2-1, which remained the score going into the halftime break. Near the end of the match, in the 84th minute, Mamadou Kansaye scored an insurance goal, assisted by Dacres to insure the UMBC win, 3-1. The match was also part of the Springhill Suites Arundel Mills BWI Kick-Off Classic and Gonzalez and Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.) represented the Redhawks on the All-Tournament team. Leaders of the Pack: Brady Ballew and Renato Bandeira have been chosen as this year s team captains. Nate Daligcon Joins Coaching Staff: In Spring 2013, Nate Daligcon, an All- American player and top area club soccer coach joined the Seattle U coaching staff as an assistant coach. He was a two-time All-American at Seattle Pacific, helping the Falcons win the 1993 Division II national championship and advance to three national semifinal games as a center midfielder. He most recently served as head coach of Seattle United B01 Copa and G95 Copa, as well as several other club teams since Men s Soccer Joins the WAC: In January 2013, the WAC announced that it would again sponsor men s soccer starting with the fall 2013 season. The league is divided into two divisions as follows: East Division (Air Force, Grand Canyon, Houston Baptist, and Kansas City) and West Division (Bakersfield, UNLV, San Jose State, and Seattle U). This is the second time the WAC has sponsored men s soccer as it was also part of the conference from Air Force and UNLV competed in the WAC for the first three seasons, while San Jose State competed in all four of those seasons. Preseason WAC Poll: In a poll of the league s eight head coaches, the Redhawks were chosen to finish sixth in the WAC in Bakersfield was chosen to finish first in the conference with five first place votes. Miguel Gonzalez and Jake Feener were named to the WAC Preseason All-Conference Team. College Sports Madness Names Preseason All-WAC Teams: As chosen by College Sports Madness, Miguel Gonzalez and Kyle Silva were named Preseason First Team All-WAC while Hamza Haddadi and Austin Sweeney were named to the Second Team Recap: In their final season in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), recent graduate Marshall Kosaka earned Second Team All-MPSF honors and sophomore Jose Merlo received Honorable Mention All-MPSF recognition. Kosaka also earned his third straight MPSF All- Academic honor, while senior Bobby Segal earned his second consecutive such honor. First-time honorees included recent graduate Devin Thomas, senior Renato Bandeira, redshirt junior Brady Ballew, and junior Kyle Silva. In 2012, head coach Pete Fewing also made his return to Seattle U in his 19th overall season at the helm.
