Redhawks to Host New and Returning WAC Opponents: After winning their first Western Athletic Conference match vs. Grand Canyon, 3-1, on Sept. 20, and shutting out Cal Poly in their final non-conference match of the season on Sept. 22, Seattle University women s soccer (4-2-2) is set to host Kansas City (Sept. 27) and New Mexico State (Sept. 29) this weekend. This will the first time the Redhawks have faced the UMKC Kangaroos but SU will face a familiar opponent in fellow WAC returner NMSU. Redhawks Tied for First in WAC Standings: After one weekend of conference play, Utah Valley (2-0-0), Seattle U (1-0-0), and Idaho (1-0-0) each have a perfect record in conference play. Regional Rankings: The Redhawks are receiving votes in the Sept. 24 edition of the NSCAA/ Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women s West Regional Poll. Leaders of the WAC: Among members of the Western Athletic Conference, Seattle U leads the league in points (41), goals (15), goals per game (1.88) and assists per game (1.38), is tied for first in assists (11) and fewest goals allowed (13), is tied for second in shutouts (2) and ranks third in GAA (1.52). During her 16 coaching seasons, she boasts 14 winning seasons, establishing her as the winningest coach in SU women s soccer history with a overall record and a.649 winning percentage following the 2012 season. She coached her 200th career win on Sept. 18, 2011 in a 3-1 victory over San Diego State University. Seattle University s former two-time NAIA All- American soccer player came home to her alma mater as the head coach of the Redhawks women s soccer program over a decade ago. She has coached the Redhawks to three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances (2004, 2006 and 2007). A 2004 Far West Coach of the Year, she boasts three NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II honorees, two All-Pacific Region and 18 Far West Region selections, three GNAC Players of the Year, eight GNAC all-conference team honorees and 27 players who have earned NAIA All-America accolades. Her teams have also boasted great academic success in her tenure, including a 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year, the 2011 NSCAA Team Academic Award, five CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans and 20 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine All-District selections. Woodward was honored at Seattle U s Annual Alumni Awards Celebration in April 2012, receiving the 2012 University Service Award. share fourth place in the conference standings. Three different Kangaroos lead the team with three goals apiece, led by Taylor Bare also adding a team-high seven points and 20 shots. Nina Tzianos has recorded all 10 complete games in goal, recording 43 saves and a 1.27 GAA. Chris Cissell, in his third season at the helm, led Kansas City to a sixth place finish in the Summit League in Scouting New Mexico State (4-5-1, WAC): SU s fellow WAC returner New Mexico State won their home match vs. Kansas City before falling on the road last weekend to open conference play. They are currently tied for fourth place with Kansas City in the current league standings. Mary Kate Koziol and Layla Todd have each recorded a team-high two goals for the Aggies, while Katie Smith has taken a team-high 16 shots, seven on goal. Jessica Schutter has played in all 10 contests in goal for NMSU, recording 44 saves, while Tayler Hammack has made one appearance, recording three saves. In his third season as head coach of the Aggies, Blair Quinn s team finished ninth, rounding out the final spot, in the 2012 WAC standings. Verdoia Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Sept ): Stephanie Verdoia was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the second of her career, also named for the week of Oct. 1-7, Over the weekend, she recorded seven shots, four on goal, also recording a goal versus Cal Poly and three total assists in the team s victories over Grand Canyon and Cal Poly. She also led the team with four shots vs. Grand Canyon on Sept. 20 and set up Julia Besagno s goal on a penalty kick, getting pulled down in the box versus the Mustangs on Sept. 22. She was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Cal Poly (9/22): Seattle University women s soccer scored early and often as they defeated Cal Poly, 4-0, in their final nonconference match of the season. Stephanie Verdoia broke through in the 24th minute, as Kat Prati and Taylor Ritzman brought the ball down the right side, passing it to Verdoia who gave the Redhawks the 1-0 lead. In the 35th minute, a Seattle U player was taken down just outside the box, resulting in a free kick by Ava Ames 3

4 to give the Redhawks the 2-0 advantage. Less than four minutes later, at exactly the 39th minute mark, Jacqui Wallis added to the Redhawk tally, taking the ball down the middle after a pass from Verdoia. Holding a 3-0 advantage at the half, Seattle U would score one more goal for insurance in the 48th minute, as Julia Besagno scored on a penalty kick after Verdoia was pulled down in the box. Prati led the team with five shots, two on goal, while Verdoia added three of her own. Overall, the Redhawks outshot Cal Poly, In goal, Brianna Smallidge got the start for Seattle U, making four saves, while Aris Coover saw her first playing time of the 2013 regular season, making one save in a complete second half. For Cal Poly, Alyssa Giannetti got the start, making two saves, while Heather Rouhier played the entire second half, also making two saves. Grand Canyon (9/20): Despite trailing at halftime, Seattle University women s soccer fought back, scoring three goals in the second half, to top Grand Canyon, 3-1, in their Western Athletic Conference home opener. In the beginning of the 5th minute, Taylor Layton put the Antelopes ahead, 1-0, dribbling down the middle and chipping the ball over SU goalkeeper Brianna Smallidge s head. The Redhawks added five more shots over the remainder of the half, but could not sink the ball as they trailed by one at the half. In the 54th minute, Natasha Howe tied the game with an unassisted shot up the middle from about 20 yards out. In the 62nd minute, Jacqui Wallis scored what would be the gamewinner, kicking it to the left corner from the right side of the goalie on back-to-back shot attempts. Howe was credited with the assist. Near the end of the 87th minute, Julia Moravec would add an insurance goal for the Redhawks as Stephanie Verdoia dribbled down the right side, passing the ball to Moravec in the middle. Verdoia led Seattle U with four shots, three on goal, while Kat Prati added three shots for the Redhawks. Overall, SU outshot GCU, In goal, Smallidge made one save in the complete game win for Seattle U while Catherine Lena made five saves for Grand Canyon. Washington (9/13): Seattle University women s soccer faced crosstown foe Washington in their second to final non-conference match, falling 5-0 at Husky Soccer Stadium. Seattle U had two early opportunities to score, the first as Mary Hill drove the ball down the left side, passing to Stephanie Verdoia in the middle, but the shot sailed over the goal. A minute later, Verdoia passed the ball from the middle to Kat Prati on the right side, who kicked the ball into the net, but SU was called offsides, as the score remained tied at zero. In the 15th minute, Washington broke through and took the lead as McKenzie Karas headed the ball in off a corner kick by Isabel Farrell. Allie Beahan, Becca Schoales, Jaclyn Softli, and Christina Archer would go on to add goals for UW. Smallidge played all 90 minutes in goal for the Redhawks, recording four saves. Megan Kufeld and Sarah Shimer shared time in goal for the Huskies, recording two and one save apiece, respectively. Ava Ames and Verdoia each recorded two shots for Seattle U. Purdue (9/8): In the third minute, Purdue s Maddy Williams put the Boilermakers ahead, 1-0, scoring her sixth goal of the season on an intercepted deflection, dribbling up the right flank and into the top of the goal. In the 23rd minute, Stephanie Verdoia, assisted by Heather Thomas, tied the game on a free kick from the west sideline at midfield before flicking the ball over Purdue keeper Jordan Ginther s head. Just seven and a half minutes later, in the 30th minute, Alex Hairston regained the lead for the Boilermakers, driving the ball in from the right side and sinking it into the top half of the net. Hadley Stuart made the assist on the goal. Fighting back, Jacqui Wallis scored her first goal of the season in the 40th minute to re-tie the match, 2-2. Verdoia and Kat Prati, with the assists, made two short right-to-left passes to Wallis before sinking the ball into the wide open net. In the Redhawks second overtime match of the weekend, neither team was able to add to their score as the contest ended in a draw, 2-2. Verdoia led the Redhawks with two shots, both on goal, while Williams led Purdue with six shots, two on goal. Mariah O Neil made her first collegiate appearance for Seattle U. Brianna Smallidge recorded all 110 minutes in goal for the Redhawks, making eight saves. Ginther made two saves in goal for the Boilermakers. Butler (9/6): Stephanie Verdoia, Taylor Ritzman, and Natasha Howe took shots for the Redhawks in the first half, with Howe s on goal, but could not sink them in the net as the score remained tied, 0-0, at half. In the 59th minute, Sophia Maccagnone scored her fourth goal of the season from 27 yards out on a free kick to put Butler ahead, 1-0. The Bulldogs made three more shots in regulation as Verdoia added a header in the 84th minute for SU. In the 90th minute, just 44 seconds before the end of regulation, Kraft broke through and scored the tying goal, her first of the season, a shot from 20 yards out in midfield, to send the game into overtime. Julia Besagno headed the ball towards the goal in the 91st minute, but it sailed wide right, with Butler adding four other shots, none successful, to send the game into a second overtime. In the second overtime, Verdoia added another shot, while Brianna Smallidge saved two more, with a third blocked, but neither team could sink the ball in the goal as the match finished in a 1-1 tie. Verdoia led the Redhawks with four shots while Maccagnone led the Bulldogs with six as they outshot the Redhawks, In goal, Smallidge recorded all 110 minutes, making one save while Julie Burton represented Butler in goal making one save. Howe and Smallidge Named WAC Players of the Week (Aug. 26-Sept. 1): Natasha Howe and Brianna Smallidge were named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, a career first for both and SU s first ever WAC Defensive Player of the Week nod. Howe, in just her third collegiate match, came in off the bench to score the game-winner in overtime vs. Boise State on Aug. 30 in the Redhawks 2-1 win. Howe was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Smallidge earned her second win of the season vs. the Broncos, allowing just one goal, while making three saves for a.750 save percentage, her second highest of the season thus far. Boise State (8/30): After nearly 30 scoreless minutes, Stephanie Verdoia drove the ball towards the goal and was pulled down by Boise State keeper Maddy McDevitt, resulting in a penalty kick. Julia Besagno) took the penalty kick, which was good, resulting in a 1-0 lead for the Redhawks, a lead they took into the halftime break. In the 55th minute, Boise State s Shannon Schueren, assisted by Ashley Hruby, drove the ball in for her first goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1. A back-and-forth contest for the remainder of regulation, the match went into overtime. Boise State made three unsuccessful shots in the first half of the overtime period, but in the 99th minute, Howe broke through the Boise State defenders to score her first collegiate goal, the golden goal. 4

5 Eastern Washington (8/25): The game remained scoreless at the half, but an offensive surge by the Redhawks following halftime led to a 2-0 Seattle U victory. Less than five minutes after the halftime break, Julia Moravec drove a shot from the right side, assisted by Stephanie Verdoia, to give the team a 1-0 lead. In the 77th minute, Verdoia added a goal of her own, a cross across the box assisted by Mary Hill to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead. SU outshot EWU, 16-6, with 12 of the Redhawks shots coming in the second half. Washington State (8/23): After a continual exchange of possession between the two teams for the first 20 minutes, Stephanie Verdoia dribbled the ball into the box before being taken down by a WSU defender, forcing a penalty kick opportunity. Julia Besagno converted on the penalty kick, giving the Redhawks a 1-0 lead. The Seattle U defense, however, could not maintain the lead, as Kailiana Johnson nudged the ball over the goal line after a free kick was blocked, tying the game 1-1 going into halftime. Just after halftime, Jocelyn Jeffers took the lead for the Cougars, 2-1, sailing a shot into the left side of the net past SU keeper Brianna Smallidge. WSU added an insurance goal just over three minutes later as Micaela Castain scored the final goal to give the Cougars the win, 3-1. GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete of the Week: August 27 - Julia Moravec September 10 - Jacqui Wallis Seattle U Picked First in Preseason WAC Coaches Poll: In a vote of the league s seven head coaches, the Redhawks were picked as the favorites to win the 2013 Western Athletic Conference title. Stephanie Verdoia was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Julia Besagno was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Verdoia, Besagno, and Mary Hill were also named Preseason All-Conference. College Sports Madness Names Preseason All-WAC Teams: College Sports Madness named Stephanie Verdoia the WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and named Julie Woodward Coach of the Year. CSM also named Verdoia, Julia Besagno, Monique Escalera, Mary Hill, and Brianna Smallidge to the Preseason First Team All-WAC and named Julia Moravec to the Preseason Second Team All-WAC. Let There Be Light: Championship Field, the home of Seattle U men s and women s soccer, will be receiving a significant enhancement in the form of lights. The installation of lights will make night matches possible as early as the middle of the 2013 season. Melissa Busque and Carlee Norquist Join Staff: Melissa Busque, who competed for the Redhawks in 2012 and is fresh off her stint with the Canadian National Team, will be serving as the Undergraduate Student Coach for the Redhawks this season. Recent graduate Carlee Norquist will serve as the team s Director of Operations. NCAA Division I Rankings: In 2012, among all Division I women s soccer players, Stephanie Verdoia tied for 53rd in gamewinning goals (4), tied for 77th in total goals (10), and tied for 78th in goals per game (.500) Recap: The Seattle University women s soccer team (9-9-2, 3-3-2), clinching a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in their first year in the conference, topped Louisiana Tech, 2-1, in the first round before falling to eventual tournament winner, Utah State, in the semifinals, 2-1. Stephanie Verdoia and Melissa Busque were named to the WAC All-Tournament Team. The Redhawks said goodbye to six student-athletes who played their final contests in Seattle U uniform in 2012 and celebrate a year in which they recorded their first three NCAA Division I hat tricks, as well as their first three WAC Offensive Player of the Week nods. Verdoia and Busque were also named First-Team All-WAC and Julia Besagno was named to the Second Team. Verdoia and Renee Vandermause were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Second Team, NCAA Division I District VIII. Leaders of the Pack: Julia Besagno and Stephanie Verdoia will serve as this year s team captains. In With the New: The Redhawks welcome three newcomers to this year s squad: Emily Castellano (Covina, Calif.), Rosalie Sittauer (Everett, Wash.), and Mariah O Neil (Tumwater, Wash.) WAC Tournament: The 2013 WAC Tournament will be hosted by New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. The top four of seven teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the tournament, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The New WAC: With the addition of men s swimming & diving and men s soccer to the Western Athletic Conference, 19 of Seattle U s 20 sports now have a conference home in the WAC. Alongside Idaho and New Mexico State, SU welcomes six newcomers to the conference including Bakersfield, Utah Valley, Kansas City (UMKC), Chicago State, Grand Canyon, and UTPA (Texas-Pan American). 5
