Maryland s final four contests as part of the tournament pit the team against nationally ranked opponents No. 14/14 Fresno State (Friday at 6:30 p.m.), No. 9/10 California (Saturday at 3:30 p.m.), No. 17/19 Nevada (Saturday at 11 p.m.) and No. 6/6 UCLA (Sunday at 2 p.m.). The Terrapins will be playing half their tournament opponents (UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii and Fresno State) for the first time in the program s 15-year history. Maryland has short series histories with Cal (0-1), Nevada (1-0) and UCLA (0-3), having played all three opponents during the 2007 season. The Terps (0-5) have spent the last week-and-a-half preparing for their upcoming tournament after opening the 2009 season in the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic. Led by Kerry Hickey, who tallied eight hits in 17 at-bats, Maryland pounded out 32 hits during their first five games. Maryland currently ranks fifth in the ACC in fielding percentage (.964), sixth in batting (.260) and seventh in pitching (4.34 ERA). Individually, Hickey ranks sixth in the conference in batting (.471), while Kendra Knight stands third in opponents batting average (.161) and tied for seventh in strikeouts (16). Hickey is one of just two players in the ACC who currently rank among the conference s top 15 in both batting average (sixth.471) and ERA (13th 2.55). The other is NC State s Stephanie Call. The 32-team Cathedral City Classic features 20 of the 64 teams from the 2008 NCAA Tournament, including four of the eight squads that competed in last year s Women s College World Series in Alabama, Florida, UCLA and reigning champion Arizona State. Of the 32 participants, 14 squads are ranked among the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and/or the USA Today /NFCA Division I Top 25. MARYLAND PROBABLE STARTERS AND QUICK NOTES Pos. Scouting the Competition UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (5-4) - Feb. 19, 6:30 p.m. UC Santa Barbara has lost four of its last five games, but three of those defeats came at the hands of ranked opponents. Hawai i Rainbow Wahine (2-8) - Feb. 19, 11 p.m. Hawai i, which was receiving votes in both national preseason polls, boasts two players hitting above.400 through its first 10 games of the season. UCLA, which competed in the 2008 Women s College World Series, has belted 23 home runs and compiled a team batting average of.335 during its first nine games of Sophomore Katie Schroeder is batting.469 and leads the Pacific-10 with six home runs. Pitcher Donna Kerr has made five starts, registering four complete games. Head Coach Laura Watten Fourth Year Texas-Arlington 92 Now in her fourth year on the job, Laura Watten has brought a dynamic new energy to the Maryland softball program. The Terrapin mentor has transformed the culture surrounding the Maryland program and brought an exciting brand of softball to Robert E. Taylor Stadium. The Terps have improved their win total in each of Watten s three seasons and rewritten the school record books in the process. None of it should be surprising, though. Watten s way is the can-do way, and it is precisely the approach the coach has taken in her quest to drive Maryland s softball program to national prominence. Hired prior to the start of the academic year, Watten has worked extensively to elevate all aspects of the program in an effort to put the Terps in a position to succeed on a national scale. The 2008 campaign saw Watten s Terps post the third-highest win total (36) in team history, including a school-record 16-game winning streak early in the season. Maryland used a blazing 19-1 start to achieve national rankings in both the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 polls for the first time since Seniors Sarde Stewart and Jenny Belak garnered All-ACC honors and were named to the NFCA Louisville Slugger All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team. In 2007, the Maryland program reaped the full benefits of Watten s recruiting efforts. Nine newcomers joined the team, including five transfers, and Maryland s lineup was transformed into an offensive juggernaut. The Terps shattered previous team records for home runs with 59 and stolen bases with 98 and set numerous individual records. Amber Jackson enjoyed the greatest offensive season in school history, setting new singleseason records for batting average (.408), runs (61), home runs (24), RBIs (56) and walks (55). Jackson led the NCAA in home runs and was a first-team All-America selection by Easton. During Watten s first season in College Park in 2006, the Terps improved their win total by four victories. Belak set a team-record with 70 hits to lead a rejuvenated offense. Watten was fresh off leading Bethune-Cookman College to the 2005 NCAA Division I Super Regionals when she was tapped to lead the Terps program. In guiding the Wildcats to a 49-win season, Watten garnered 2005 NFCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year honors. During Watten s eight years at B-CC, the Wildcats made five NCAA Regional appearances and captured five conference titles. The four-time MEAC coach of the Year posted an eight-year mark of and averaged more than 40 wins per season. 3 MARYLAND SOFTBALL GAME NOTES Cathedral City Classic (Feb ) FRESH FACES The Terrapin roster underwent significant changes this past offseason, as head coach Laura Watten continues to remake the Terps in her own image. The 2009 edition of Maryland softball features a youth movement of sorts. The team boasts just three seniors (Sarah Dooley, Breanna Shaw and Devon Williams) and welcomes 10 newcomers (five freshmen, four transfers and one walk-on) in hopes of compensating for the loss of nine letterwinners from Six newcomers already have started at least one game this season and several have made strong contributions: P Kendra Knight: Recorded 16 strikeouts in 9.1 innings on the mound during her first weekend of collegiate softball. Despite losing two games, Knight limited opposing hitters to a.161 batting average. She allowed just one hit with 10 strikeouts in five innings against Pittsburgh (2/8). OF Nadine Blackie: Collected four hits in 13 at-bats (.308), including a double, during the FAU Kick-Off Classic. Went 2-for-4 versus Florida Atlantic (2/6) LAST TIME OUT: Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic Despite coming away winless from the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic, the Terps showed glimpses of their young squad s potential during the three-day tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. Sophomore Kerry Hickey collected eight hits in 17 at-bats and allowed just four earned runs in 11 innings pitched (2.55 ERA). Freshman pitcher Kendra Knight recorded 16 strikeouts in three appearances, limiting opposing batters to a.161 average. Fellow newcomer Nadine Blackie, a transfer from Pensacola Junior College, and senior leader Devon Williams also batted over.300 during the season-opening tournament. Two of the Terps losses came at the hands of ranked opponents and two defeats were by a single run, as Maryland outhit three of its five foes.
