1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (6143, nd half, 3120 road) Second Place, CL Southern, 2.5 GB LAST TIME OUT: Down 31, the Pelicans scored a run in the eighth and received a tworun, walkoff blast from shortstop CARLOS PENALVER with no outs in the ninth to win it 43...The dramatic longball completed a threegame sweep of the Nationals...JEREMY NULL allowed just two runs in five innings, and MICHAEL HEESCH earned his eighth win with two scoreless relief innings. BUY, BUY, BUY! SELL, SELL, SELL!: The two clubs in this series are going in opposite directions. Less than a week ago, the Keys were riding high with a secondhalf Northern Division lead. Meanwhile, the Pelicans were fighting for second place spot in the Southern with Carolina. Frederick though has lost it s last five games after riding a fourgame winstreak. The Pelicans have won five in a row after dropping four straight and have won 13 of it s last 17 games. Frederick is one of two Carolina clubs (along with Wilmington) to have a winning record against the Pelicans this year; both are 43 against the Birds. THE WHAT DAY OF SUMMER?: The Pelicans are playing some of their best ball of the year in the heat of the summer, posting a record here in the month of July. With a win tonight, the club can post its first 20win month of July in the last decade. The best record during the month in known team history was July of 2008 when the Pelicans went 198. The Pelicans are second in the league in batting average this month (.254), tied for third in homers (13), and second in ERA (2.65). Their 1910 record during the month is the best mark in the league, and the Birds have won 13 of their last 17 games. YACKITYYAK WALKOFF JACK: Last night s walkoff home run for CARLOS PENALVER involved a lot of firsts for the young CONWAY CRUISIN : shortstop: it was his first home run of the season; it was the first home run in his fiveyear career that came after the fourth inning, hence becoming the first walkoff blast of his career; and it was his first tworun tater ever. Of his four career homers, two have been solo shots. His only other home run came in the second inning of a contest against Vancouver on August 10, 2013, when he hit his first and only career grand slam in a 92 win for the Boise Hawks. FROM FEAST TO FAMINE: The Pelicans have teed off against Potomac this year, blasting 15 home runs against the Nationals, the most against any Carolina League opponent. With 45 combined home runs this season, the Birds have hit 8 of their last 10 bombs against the PNats. Penalver s homer last night was just the fourth of his career, and it comes one day after TREY MARTIN s first homer BIRD FOOD: of the season. The only Pelican on the active roster who has not gone deep is SUTTON WHITING, but he has only played in two games (6 atbats) and has not gone yard as a pro yet. The Birds have played just seven games against tonight s opponent, the Frederick Keys, RANKINGS WITHIN THE CAROLINA LEAGUE Batting Average/Rank / 2nd Runs scored / 2nd Home runs / 3rd Stolen Bases...76 / 6th ERA/Rank / 1st Pitching strikeouts / 7th Walks allowed / 2nd (fewest) Double plays turned...87 / 6th Errors committed...62 / 1st (fewest) Southern Division Standing/GB... 2nd / 2.5 Attendance Avg./Rank...3,740 / 4th RECENT PELICANS TRANSACTIONS July 30 RHP Jeremy Null activated off of the 7day disabled list July 30 RHP James Pugliese placed on the 7day disabled list July 23 IF Sutton Whiting received from Class AShort Season Eugene July 21 IF Jason Vosler recieved from ClassA South Bend July 21 RHP Jasvir Rakkar actived off of temporary inactive list July 21 IF Jacob Rogers promoted to DoubleA Tennessee and have yet to hit a home run against them. Frederick on the other hand has gone deep six times against Myrtle Beach, including three homers in a double header on June 9. WHEELING AND DEALING: Eight former Pelicans players were dealt at and just prior to the July 31 MLB nonwaiver Trade Deadline. The Rangers traded for lefthanded starting pitcher COLE HAMELS in an eightplayer trade that sent six men to the Phillies, including five former Pelicans Pelicans starters JERAD EICKHOFF and ALEC ASHER along with Pelicans catcher JORGE ALFARO, and 2014 Pelicans outfielder NICK WILLIAMS were sent along with Rangers starter MATT HARRISON (who pitched for the Pelicans in 2006 in the Braves farm system), and righthanded pitching prospect JAKE THOMPSON were sent to Philly for Hamels, Jake Diekman and cash. According to Baseball America, Asher, Alfaro, and Williams were all among the top 15 prospects in the Rangers system entering the 2015 season. The Rangers also picked up reliever Sam Dyson from the Marlins in exchange for former Pelicans catcher TOMAS TELIS (2012) and LHP CODY EGE ( ). A Pelican from the Braves era ( ), LHP LUIS AVILAN (2010) was in the threeteam, 13player deal between Atlanta, Miami, and Los AngelesNL, headlined by Alex Wood. The Pelicans were affiliated with the Texas Rangers for four seasons before joining the Cubs Family this season. The Cubs made two trades. They acquired righthanded veteran starter DAN HAREN, but the trade did not affect the Pelicans roster. DoubleA shortstop Elliot Soto and righty Ivan Pineyro are headed to Miami in the deal. They also dealt Junior Lake to Baltimore for former Rangers farmhand Tommy Hunter. A little more than three years ago, JOSH CONWAY was starring at TicketReturn.Com Field as a weekend starter with Coastal Carolina University. A bevy of injuries, surgeries, and two missed seasons later, Conway is thriving in the Pelicans bullpen in the second half of this season. Over his last nine appearances, the righthander has not allowed a run in a span of 14 1/3 innings, the longest such stretch by a Pelicans reliever this year and the longest since 2014 Pelicans bullpen man JOSH MCELWEE went 20 2/3 innings without allowing a run last August. After posting a 4.56 firsthalf ERA, Conway has not allowed a run in the second half, earned or otherwise and has lowered his ERA each month. He followed a 6.00 April ERA with a 5.00 ERA in May, a 1.54 ERA in June and now a sterling 0.00 ERA in July. The Pelicans are streaking in the win/loss column with eight straight wins, followed by four consecutive losses, and now five straight wins...the Pelicans have the secondworst record in the CL in games decided by two or fewer runs (2326) but have won and have dominated lopsided affairs (3817 when winning by 3 or more runs; 1st in CL)...The Pelicans play a game on 19 straight days before an off day August 3. Paul was the Cubs compenstaion pick in the first round in 2012 for losing Carlos Pena to free agency. He signed for the slotprovided amount of $911,700. Scott Fairbanks is the scout who signed Blackburn. The Baseball America Prospect Handbook rated Blackburn as the 16thbest prospect in the Cubs organizaion in the spring of He was at #12 in the winter before 2014 spring training. Then he dropped down to #18 in the offseason before 2015 camps opened. He was the 27th ranked Cubs prospect according to MLBPipeline s Propsect Watch to start the year. When he was drafted, MLB.com said of him After a big performance at last summer s Area Code Games, Blackburn has continued pitching well this spring to keep him firmly on the prospect map. The NoCal high schooler has a good fastball that hits 92 mph consistently and will touch a tick or two higher on the radar gun at times. His two secondary offeringsa curve and a changeupboth have the chance to be very effective pitches. He s generally around the strike zone and thanks to his athleticism and sound delivery, his command should only improve with experience. The Arizona State recruit has some projectability, meaning his already pretty good stuff has room to get even better. That should get him off the board early enough to keep him from heading to Arizona SEASON Blackburn began the year as the third starter in the sixman Pelicans rotation. He s the #18 prospect in the Cubs system according to Baseball America and #24 by MLBPipeline.com. After a tough start to the year, Blackburn posted four straight starts of two runs or fewer allowed, going 20 with a 2.53 ERA over the stretch (6 ER / 21.1 IP). That run was broken up on June 11, when the righty allowed six runs, five earned, in 5.0 innings of work at Frederick. VS.
