1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (78-55, Second Half, Home) 1st Place, +2.5 GA, CL Southern FLETE, PELICANS WALK-OFF WITH 1-0 WIN IN 11 With the score still deadlocked at 0-0, David Bote led off the 11th inning with a triple. Two batters later, Bryant Flete singled up the middle through a drawn-in infield to win the game for Myrtle Beach. Great pitching was the story throughout the evening, with Carolina League Pitcher of the Year Trevor Clifton going the first six frames with just three hits allowed, no walks and seven strikeouts. Tommy Thorpe fired three shutout innings, matching a season-high, before Daury Torrez tossed two blank frames for the win. SHUT OUT AND DANCE The Pelicans 1-0 blanking of Lynchburg on Tuesday was their 14th shutout of the season, the most of any club in the Carolina League. That was also Myrtle Beach s longest shutout in almost exactly a year - the Birds blanked Wilmington in a inning triumph on August 29, Last night s blanking also wasn t far off the the longest blanking in recorded club history (through 2005). The Pelicans own a pair of 13-inning shutouts, one in a 3-0 win at Winston-Salem on May 17, 2012, and another to also triumph 2-0 at Wilmington on April 4 of the 2008 campaign, the season s Opening Day. WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT THE DOG DAYS? The hot summer has not affected the Pelicans at all so far, with Myrtle Beach winning 29 of their last 36 games, including eight in a row. With Tuesday s win over Lynchburg, the Birds are 22-4 in August, setting a club record for wins in a month in recorded Pelicans history (through the 2005 season). The 2014 and 2015 squads had each held a share of the record, winning 21 games in May of those respective seasons BULLPEN CALL WAITING In 23 games from July 2 through July 26, Myrtle Beach s starting rotation managed just seven quality starts, posting a 5.38 ERA (68 ER in IP, 10.9 H/9) on an average of 4.1 innings per outing. However, in the 31 contests since then, Pelican starters have pitched at least into the sixth inning 25 times, registering a 2.90 ERA (57 ER in IP). With just 149 hits allowed (7.6 H/9) during that span, the rotation has been able to go deeper into games, averaging 5.2 frames per start. vs. Lynchburg Hillcats (82-52, Second Half, Road) 1st Place, +1.0 GA, CL Northern Wednesday, August 31, :05 p.m. TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Myrtle Beach, S.C. Since July 6, when this stretch of hot hitting began, the Pelicans have scored 299 runs, tied for the eighth-most in all of Minor League Baseball (5.9 runs per game). The Birds also rank tied for eighth in the minor leagues during this stretch in walks (209, 4.1 per game), 10th in OBP (.360) and 11th in hits (495, 9.7 per game). Additionally, Myrtle Beach s 67 steals during this span are tied for the fifth-most of any full season minor league club. MOTOR BOTE David Bote went 2-for-5 in Tuesday s 1-0 walk-off win, extending his on-base streak to 22 games - one away from matching Charcer Burks for the longest of any Pelican this season. During this current roll, Bote is hitting.380/.452/.565 with 10 doubles, two triples, a home run and 13 RBIs. Earlier during this on-base streak, he also put together a 15-game hitting streak, the best for any Myrtle Beach masher in EXTRA CREDIT Myrtle Beach s extra-inning win over Lynchburg Tuesday was nothing new of late. The Birds have played eight contests in August that have resulted in free baseball, their most in any month in recorded club history (since 2005). The Pelicans 17 extra-inning games this year are their most since playing 19 in SOME WALKS TO REMEMBER One of the hallmarks of the Cubs organizational philosophy is to control the strike zone both offensively and defensively. The Pelicans have certainly demonstrated that in Myrtle Beach has drawn 513 free passes, the sixth-most of any MiLB team. In addition, the Birds have handed out walked just 396 hitters, which places them with the fewest in the league. PELICAN POINTS Pelicans RHP Zach Hedges was promoted to Double-A Tennessee on July 24, the same day SS Gleyber Torres and OF Rashad Crawford were scratched from the lineup before getting traded to the Yankees on July 25. Since the 24th, Myrtle Beach is 27-7 (.794).
