MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn LHP Justin Steele (1-1, 1.56 ERA) vs. RHP Shao-Ching Chiang (2-1, 0.93 ERA) FIVE-RUN THIRD LEADS TO FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN Tyler Alamo tied a career-high with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in a five-run fifth inning, and the Pelicans won their fifth consecutive game by knocking off Lynchburg 9-6 on Friday. Things were scoreless in the third when Bryant Flete walked with the bases loaded to plate the game s first run. Trent Giambrone followed with a sacrifice fly and then Alamo bashed his three-run dinger. Lynchburg came rallying back with four in the bottom of the frame, but the Pelicans were able to stay in front, and three more tallies in the fifth helped seal things. Tommy Thorpe (2-1) earned the win with 2.1 solid innings out of the bullpen and James Norwood picked up his third save. FIVE FOR FIGHTING Myrtle Beach s 9-6 victory over Lynchburg on Friday was the Pelicans fifth consecutive win, and seventh in the club s last eight games. The Birds did roll for five wins in a row from April of the 2015 season. The last time Myrtle Beach won seven of eight games this early came in 2014, when the Pelicans lost their first four games of the campaign, promptly won seven in a row before dropping a pair of games and then going on a six-game winning streak. NO DAYS OFF Through the season s first 22 games, Myrtle Beach has had just two starters pitch into the sixth inning, with Adbert Alzolay s 6.0 frames on April 27 representing the longest a Birds lid-lifter has gone in any game. With Pelicans starting pitchers averaging just 4.2 innings a start, the Birds have had to rely quite a bit on the bullpen. In fact, Pelicans starters have collectively tossed only innings, or 52.1% of the club s total (194.0 IP). The Birds bullpen has already racked up 93.0 frames (47.9%) this year. At this juncture last year, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers had accounted for 60.4% (117.0) of the club s innings. The Birds bullpen was responsible for only 39.6% (76.2) of the team s innings at this point last season, recording roughly 10 outs per game. This year s relievers have needed to induce about 13 outs per game, meaning it s probably not a coincidence that the bullpen has accounted for 10 of the 22 decisions, compiling an 8-2 record (the starters are 5-7). At this time last year, Pelicans relievers had a 2-3 record, compared to a 9-8 mark for the starting pitchers. SELF-FULFILLING STATEMENTS Through the first 12 games of the year, Myrtle Beach scored just 36 runs (3.0 per game), by far the fewest in the Carolina League. However, the last 10 games have seen a resurgence for the club s offense, with the Pelicans plating 62 runs (6.2 per game). Perhaps the biggest reasons for the Birds increased offensive outputs has been regressions to the mean that often come with larger sample sizes. For example, the club s batting average on balls in play (BABIP) through 12 games was just.262, far below the.300 average that nearly every single team across every single level throughout the history of baseball has posted. Entering Game No. 23, the Pelicans now possess a.313 BABIP. That more normalized distribution of hits falling in on balls put in play has helped Myrtle Beach score at least six runs in seven of the 10 games of this stretch. The Birds plated at least six runs just once in their first dozen contests of the campaign. FROM THE PELICANS ANALYTICS DEPARTMENT The Pelicans scored just 36 runs through their first 12 games of the season, the 15th-fewest in all of Minor League Baseball. However, in the 10 games since then, Myrtle Beach s 62 tallies are tied for the 10th-most in the minors. An interesting trend has emerged, and it seems like the Birds have decided to sacrifice their quantity of contact for their quality of contact. Myrtle Beach totaled 96 strikeouts in their first dozen contests, an average of 8.0 per game. However, in their last 10 battles, the Birds have whiffed 95 times, the 20-most in MiLB, and an average 9.5 times per game. The increase in strikeouts has also seen an increase hard contact, and not coincidentally, runs; Myrtle Beach batted.226/.301/.336 in their first 12 games, but they ve put together a.277/.338/.422 line over the last 10. The Pelicans posted 16 doubles and eight homers (1.3 and 0.7 per game, respectively) in the first 12 contests, compared to 16 doubles and nine dingers (1.6 and 0.9 per game, respectively) over the past 10. PELICAN POINT United in their attempt to run on Myrtle Beach s pitching, opponents have tried to steal 44 bases in 2017, the most keyed on any squad in the Carolina League. The Birds have archered 10 of them, with their 22.7% caught stealing mark yanking them down to ninth in the circuit. Steele was the second player from George County to sign with Southern Miss, following in the footsteps of Mason Robbins, who played for the Winston- Salem Dash in The number 21 is special to Steele. His father, Ben, wore it as a wide receiver in the mid-1980s at the University of Alabama before a back injury ended his career. Justin s grandfather also wore the number playing professionally in Japan. Justin s father, Ben Steele was recruited to Alabama by Paul Bear Bryant, but ended up playing for Ray Perkins after Bryant retired. -Justin s older brother, Jordan, pitched at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College SEASON -After allowed just one earned run on April 8 at Lynchburg, Steele fired five shutout innings against the Hillcats on April 13. The lefty followed that up with 5.1 shutout frames against Buies Creek on April 18. Thus, coming into his start on April 23 at Down East, Steele had gone 11 innings in a row without yielding a run. -Steele has shown a hefty platoon split so far, with lefties just 3-for-17 (.568 OPS) against him, compared to a.705 OPS that right-handed batters have put together in 50 at-bats SEASON -Steele had two starts in which he gave up eight runs. The southpaw did not allow more than three earned runs in any of his other 17 outings.
