1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (53-67, 19-31) at Potomac Nationals (62-54, 25-24) Wednesday, August 15, :05 p.m. Game No. 121 Second Half Game No. 51 Road Game No. 59 Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium Woodbridge, Va. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Tyson Miller (8-8, 3.81 ERA) vs. RHP Kyle Johnston (3-1, 3.19 ERA) vs. THE NATIONALS 2018 vs. Nationals in Myrtle Beach in Potomac All-Time vs. Potomac (.491) 2017 Regular Season vs. Nationals in Myrtle Beach in Potomac BIRDS SPLIT TWIN BILL WITH PAIR OF 1-0 GAMES The Myrtle Beach Pelicans narrowly avoided a no-hitter in their Tuesday doubleheader opener to win 1-0 before the Potomac Nationals took the finale 1-0. In the opener, the Pelicans were no-hit for the first 8.2 innings. In a scoreless ninth, pinch-runner Yeiler Peguero started on second base before moving to third on a ground out. Aramis Ademan s RBI single registered Myrtle Beach s first hit and also gave the Birds a 1-0 lead. In the finale, the game was scoreless into the sixth. Jack Sundberg singled with one out in the frame before moving to second on a ground out. Aldrem Corredor s RBI single then pushed the P-Nats to the decisive 1-0 advantage. CAN T WIN IF YOU DON T SCORE Myrtle Beach blanked the Potomac Nationals 1-0 in their Tuesday doubleheader opener before falling 1-0 in the finale. Game one marked the Pelicans 15 shutout of the season, a figure that trails only Buies Creek s 18 zeroes in the Carolina League. The finale represented the Birds club-record 19th shutout loss, by far the most in the circuit, with second-place Down East, Frederick and Lynchburg tied at 11 defeats. The Pelicans have been involved in 34 shutouts this season, the most in the league since at least the 2009 season. HOUSE OF HORRORS Over the last three seasons, Myrtle Beach is just 8-14 (.364) at Potomac s Pfitzner Stadium. Somewhat stunningly, of those 14 defeats, five have come on walk-offs by the P-Nats, with another coming in the Nationals last at-bat. Thus, over the last three seasons, Potomac is responsible for nearly one-third of the 16 walk-offs on the Birds. In these 22 contests, the P-Nats have outscored the Pelicans by a narrow margin of Eighteen of these 22 meetings have been determined by no more than three runs. FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER Over the Pelicans last 20 contests, 18 have been decided by three runs or less, including a remarkable 14 by just one tally. On the season, Myrtle Beach has played 77 games decided by no more than three runs, the second-highest total in the Carolina League. The Pelicans are (.494) in those engagements. THE WEEK AHEAD START SPREADING THE NEWS Over the last 11 games, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers have ceded three earned runs or less 10 times. During that span, the club s starters have pitched a total of 55.1 innings, yielding 20 earned runs on 41 hits for a 3.25 ERA. The Birds bullpen has started to heat up recently as well; After posting a 6.38 ERA due to 13 runs, all earned, on 27 hits in 18.1 frames in the seven games from August 2-11, Pelicans relievers have allowed just one run on seven hits in 13.2 innings (0.66 ERA) over the last four contests. MILLER TIME Tyson Miller, who starts Wednesday s contest at Potomac, has thrived against everyone in the Carolina League save for Down East, who he has a 5.81 ERA in six starts against (20 ER in 31.0 IP). Against all other opponents, Miller has posted a 2.96 ERA (24 ER in 73.0 IP). On the season, the La Quinta, Calif., native leads the Carolina League in WHIP (1.13) and ranks third in batting average against (.225), eighth in FIP (3.65) and ninth in ERA (3.81). Opponents have struck out in 24.1 percent of plate appearances against Miller, the thirdbest mark in the league. THE DOG DAYS OF AUGUST After winning their final three games of a July, Myrtle Beach is off to just a 3-9 start in the month of August, and the Pelicans offense has really struggled in the season s final full month. The Birds are batting just.220/.290/.282 to post a.572 OPS, far below their league-worst mark of.639 that is.036 away from ninth-place Carolina. Over the first 12 games of August, the Pelicans have mustered just 13 extra-base hits. Myrtle Beach is also a woeful 15-for-80 (.188) during the month with runners in scoring position. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL Though the Pelicans snapped their seven-game losing streak - the club s first since in Friday s 6-5 victory over Wilmington, the Birds are still 7-18 (.280) over their last 25 contests. During that span, Myrtle Beach has been outscored 99-62, yielding at least four runs in 15 of those 25 games. For perspective, the Birds had surrendered at least four runs in just four of their previous 17 contests. Myrtle Beach has also scored at least four runs in just seven of these last 25 games.
