The Woodies scored two runs in their first at-bats, but an RBI ground out from Luis Ayala got the Birds on the board in the second. After a three-run Down East third made the score 5-1, the Pelicans answered back with a huge fourth inning. Wladimir Galindo notched an RBI double and Yeiler Peguero registered an RBI single to draw Myrtle Beach within 5-3. Monasterio s grand slam then put the Birds up for good. Jared Young s leadoff home run in the fifth added to the Pelicans advantage. However, Down East plated two in the sixth to get within 8-7. In the bottom of the frame, Jhonny Pereda s RBI single and Young s sacrifice fly put the margin at MACY S THANKSGIVING PEREDA Jhonny Pereda went 1-for-5 on Sunday, pushing his on-base streak to 21 games. Over these last 21 contests, Pereda is 26-for-84 (.310/.376/.417) with a double, triple, two home runs, 11 RBIs and nine walks. On the season, Pereda s opposite field rate of 36.5 percent ranks ninth in the Carolina League. He has also posted the ninth-highest line drive rate (23.6 percent), with a swinging-strike rate of 8.2 percent that places as the eighth-lowest in the circuit. In his five minor league seasons prior to this one, Pereda played in an average of just 53.2 games per campaign, slashing.238/.323/.302. This year, he is at.282/.354/.384 in 93 games. ERROR 503: SERVICE UNAVAILABLE The Pelicans made two errors in Tuesday s win over Down East, the club s fourth straight game with a pair of miscues. Myrtle Beach has actually committed at least one error in each of the last eight contests, matching a season-high. The club has compiled a total of 16 miscues over that stretch. In comparison, in the 22 games prior to this run, the Birds had made a total of 15 errors. Not coincidentally, the Pelicans 124 errors leads the Carolina League and ranks as the 11th-highest in Minor League Baseball. Having said that, Myrtle Beach s defensive efficiency, which measures how many balls put into a play that a club turns into outs, is.697. THE WEEK AHEAD YOUNG FOREVER In the first four games following his July 7 promotion from Low-A South Bend to Myrtle Beach, Jared Young went just 2-for-15 (.133) with an RBI and three walks. However, the Prince George, British Columbia native seems to be starting to figure out the High-A level. Over the last 17 games, he is batting 23-for-63 with two doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs and five walks to slash.365/.412/.540. Young has reached base in all 21 games with Myrtle Beach, and dating back to his time with Low-A South Bend, is currently on a 30-game on-base streak. MILLER TIME Over his last four starts, Tyson Miller has yielded just six runs on 13 hits in 21.2 innings for a 2.49 ERA, striking out 26 against eight walks. The right-hander s hot streak has helped push his FIP, an ERA estimator based on factors most within a pitcher s control like strikeouts, walks and home runs, down to 3.31, the fourth-lowest in the Carolina League. Miller has posted the second-highest fly ball rate (48.3 percent) and the second-lowest ground ball rate (34.3 percent) in the circuit. Opponents have struck out in 25.3 percent of plate appearances against Miller, the third-best mark in the league. His walk percentage of 6.8 places 12th. FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER Myrtle Beach rallied from a four-run deficit to beat Down East 10-7 on Tuesday, the Birds first come-from-behind win of at least three runs since June 8. Tuesday s series opener also marked the eighth consecutive game the Pelicans have played decided by three runs or less, with the club appropriately going 4-4 in those contests. Of those eight games, six have been decided by one run. On the season, Myrtle Beach has played the third-highest number of games in the Carolina League decided by no more than three runs. During his final year at Cal Baptist, Miller posted a 9-3 record and 2.27 ERA in innings. The La Quinta, Calif., native fired two complete games, including one shutout, and added one save in 16 appearances (15 starts). His 237 career strikeouts rank third all-time in school history SEASON -Over his last four starts, the right-hander has yielded six runs on 13 hits in 21.2 innings for a 2.49 ERA. During that span, he has struck out 26 against eight walks. -Interestingly enough, Miller has posted the second-highest fly ball rate (48.3 percent) and the second-lowest ground ball rate (34.3 percent) in the Carolina League.
