1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (22-21) at Salem Red Sox (27-15) Sunday, May 21, :05 p.m. Game No. 44 Road Game No. 23 Haley Toyota Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark Salem, Va. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Adbert Alzolay (3-1, 2.85 ERA) vs. RHP Shaun Anderson (0-1, ERA) vs. THE RED SOX 2017 vs. Red Sox in Myrtle Beach in Salem All-Time vs. Salem (.503) 2016 Regular Season vs. Red Sox in Myrtle Beach in Salem BIG INNINGS DRIVE SALEM BY MYRTLE BEACH Despite an Eloy Jimenez home run, Myrtle Beach surrendered three in the sixth and five in the seventh to fall Saturday at Salem by a score of 9-2. Jimenez notched an RBI ground out in the first inning for the Pelicans to draw first blood. Michael Chavis hit his first of two homers to knot the score at one in the fourth. Jimenez went yard to put the Birds back in front at 2-1 in the sixth. However, the Red Sox rolled out to a 9-2 lead on the Myrtle Beach bullpen, which surrendered eight runs on nine hits in three innings of work. Pelicans starter Ryan Kellogg ceded just one run on three hits in five innings of work, but earned a no-decision. Jimenez had two hits and drove in both of Myrtle Beach s runs in the loss. IS THE PEN OUT OF INK? The Pelicans starting pitching and offense have both had various peaks and valleys throughout the early part of the 2016 campaign. However, at least until two days ago, the one constant Myrtle Beach could rely on was its bullpen, which had posted a 2.85 ERA in innings (7.6 H/9, 170 K, 67 BB) over the season s first 41 games. However, the Birds relievers have struggled mightily in the first two games of their series at Salem, costing Myrtle Beach each of those contests. So far in their set against the Red Sox, the Pelicans bullpen has surrendered 12 runs, each of them earned, on 16 hits in 7.1 innings for a ERA (19.6 H/9, 10 K, 5 BB). SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER Myrtle Beach went back to their struggling offensive ways on Saturday, plating just two runs in a 9-2 defeat at Salem. Thus, the Birds have tallied two runs or fewer in seven of their last 12 games. By comparison, the Pelicans scored at least six runs in a contest eight times in a 12-game stretch from April During that hot streak, the club scored a total of 75 runs (6.3 runs per game), tied for the eighth most in Minor League Baseball. However, in the 19 contests since then, the Birds have hit that six-run mark just six times in a game, plating a total of 73 runs (3.8 per game). They slashed.273/.330/.411 (.741 OPS) from April 18-30, but that has dipped to.228/.278/.370 (.648 OPS) in the 19 games following that point. THE LEASH IS STARTING TO COME OFF In a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three times. During that span, Myrtle Beach s rotation gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasting roughly 4.0 frames per outing. However, since that point, it appears that the Birds starters may be showing signs of turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in eight of their past nine games, with the lone exception being a spot start from Casey Bloomquist in the back end of a doubleheader. The club s starters have allowed just 21 runs, 16 earned, on 38 hits in 51.1 innings (2.81 ERA, 6.7 H/9) during this time frame, lasting 5.2 frames per outing. HOMER AND THE ILLIAD With an Eloy Jimenez home run on Saturday, the Pelicans have already bashed 35 dingers this year, good enough for third in the Carolina League. Those 35 bombs are already the most Myrtle Beach has hit in the first two months of a season since 2014, when the club racked up 51 over April and May, helped in large part by 21 alone from Joey Gallo. Outside of that Gallo-aided 2014 team, the last time the Pelicans launched this many bombs in a campaign s first two months was 2010, when they crushed 36 in April and May. Obviously, this year s Birds still have 10 games remaining in the month to catch the 2010 squad. DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS Myrtle Beach played mistake-free baseball in a 9-2 loss on Saturday in Salem, but the Birds have committed at least one error in five of their last seven games. After making just eight errors in the first 14 games of the campaign, the Pelicans have committed 33 miscues over their last 29 games, including 14 over their last 11 contests. On the season, Myrtle Beach ranks in the bottom half of the league by turning just 68.5 percent of balls hit into play against them into outs, far below league-leader Lynchburg at 70.6 percent. The major league average is about 70.5 percent. PELICAN POINT Heading into play on Sunday, Myrtle Beach has lost five of their last six games. That has caused them to drop from one-back of Buies Creek to five-back of the Astros. UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP. STARTER Mon. Alzolay hails from San Felix, Venezuela, which is actually part of Ciudad Guayana. San Felix makes up the old town at the east while Puerto Ordaz is a new town at the west, lying on the Caroní and Orinoco Rivers and the site of the Llovizna Falls. -Ciudad Guayana was actually founded multiple times in different places, due to the continuous attacks of pirates and conquerors, which destroyed it as they went down the Orinoco River in search of El Dorado. In 1618, when he was near the old Guiana, an English expedition sent by Walter Raleigh sacked and destroyed the city entirely. In 1764, the residents were relocated to Angostura, now Ciudad Bolivar, due to the continuous attacks of English and Dutch pirates. The last foundation took place at its original site on July 2, 1961 and was called Ciudad Guayana SEASON -The Pelicans Opening Day starter, Alzolay went five innings in a 4-2 win over Lynchburg on April 6. He struck out five and walked two, while allowing two runs on five hits. -Alzolay has allowed more than three earned runs in a start just once all season. Over his last six, he has worked 32.2 innings, ceding nine runs, eight earned, on 25 hits for a 2.20 ERA (26 K, 7 BB). -In game one of a doubleheader at Winston-Salem on May 10, Alzolay came within two outs of a no-hitter before an infield single by Louis Silverio broke up the bid. Alzolay settled for a complete-game shutout, yielding two hits and three walks against three strikeouts in seven innings. -The right-hander has shown some platoon splits so far this year. Right-handed batters have posted a.548 OPS in 82 at-bats, with lefties registering a.688 OPS in 73 at-bats SEASON -Alzolay was named a Midwest League Midseason All-Star. VS.
