1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (21-16) vs. Buies Creek Astros (22-15) Monday, May 15, :05 p.m. Game No. 38 Home Game No. 18 TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Myrtle Beach, S.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn LHP Ryan Kellogg (1-2, 7.20 ERA) vs. LHP Framber Valdez (0-0, 3.16 ERA) PELICANS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER, WIN SERIES Oscar De La Cruz fired a complete-game shutout in game one of Sunday s doubleheader to help the Pelicans win 7-0, and Myrtle Beach won the twin bill finale 5-4 in 13 innings on an Eloy Jimenez walk-off walk. De La Cruz scattered just five hits in his effort to earn the win. Meanwhile, Jimenez smacked an RBI single in the first just before Eddy Martinez launched a three-run shot to make it 4-0. A Matt Rose two-run shot in the fourth made it 6-0. The Birds trailed 4-0 in their last at-bats of game two, only for Bryant Flete to hit an RBI single and Daniel Spingola to launch a game-tying, bases-clearing double. Myrtle Beach s bullpen retired the final 21 batters they faced. EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT! Myrtle Beach and Lynchburg played 20 innings of baseball on their Mother s Day twin bill, with the Pelicans ultimately winning both games. That in itself may not actually be too surprising, as Myrtle Beach has now either swept or been swept in nine of their last 10 doubleheaders dating back to last season. The Pelicans finale triumph lasted 13 innings, and was Myrtle Beach s first extra-inning game of the season. That marked the longest into a campaign it took the Birds to play their first game involving free baseball since 2007, when the Pelicans competed in their first extra-inning contest on May 22 against Winston-Salem. The 20 innings of baseball on Sunday lasted a combined five hours and 48 minutes of game time. That was the most baseball Myrtle Beach has played, both by innings and time, since June 12, 2011, when the Birds engaged in a 23-inning, 3-2 defeat at Kinston. That contest lasted six hours and 27 minutes, and is the longest game, both by innings and time, in Carolina League history. OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR The Pelicans are in the midst of an 11-game stretch in which they see Lynchburg, Buies Creek and Salem - three squads that possess three of the best five run differentials in the Carolina League. Those three teams have combined to mark +60 on the season. Meanwhile, Winston-Salem, Carolina and Down East, Myrtle Beach s opponents after this stretch (5/23-6/3), have the three of the four worst run differentials, combining at -81 entering play on Monday. SPIN DOCTOR After batting just.231/.322/.327 in 49 games with Myrtle Beach in 2016, few expected Pelicans outfielder Daniel Spingola to be among the league leaders in many categories this season. However, the Roswell, Ga. native has surged to first in the circuit in on-base percentage (.429), second in average (.343) and fifth in slugging percentage (.583). In addition, during Thursday s win over Winston-Salem, Spingola notched his fifth triple, which ranks second in the league. Perhaps a reason for the Georgia Tech product s is a sudden commitment towards pulling the ball. According to FanGraphs, Spingola is pulling 48.7 percent of his balls in play, by far the highest mark of his career, and well above the 38.6 percent mark he posted with Myrtle Beach in IT S NOT ABOUT HOW YOU START Over their last 16 games, Myrtle Beach s starting pitchers have through the fifth inning just six times, giving up a combined 57 runs, 41 earned, on 86 hits in 69.1 innings (5.32 ERA, 11.2 H/9). With Pelicans starters averaging just 4.1 frames per start, the Birds bullpen has helped the club through some tough times. During this stretch, Myrtle Beach s relievers have ceded 27 runs, 22 earned, on 56 hits in 64.2 frames (3.06 ERA, 7.8 H/9). A sign of optimism, perhaps, is the Pelicans rotation could be turning a corner. During their series against the Hillcats, Birds starters allowed just five runs, one earned, on 15 hits in 16.1 innings (0.55 ERA, 8.3 H/9). PEN PALS Through the season s first 37 games, Myrtle Beach has had just six performances in which their starter pitched into the sixth inning. With Pelicans starting pitchers averaging just 4.1 innings a start, the Birds have had to rely quite a bit on the bullpen. In fact, the Pelicans analytics department has found that the club s starters have collectively tossed only innings, or 52.1% of the club s total (319.0 IP). The Birds bullpen has already racked up frames (47.9%) this year. At this juncture last year, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers had accounted for 62.2% (205.0) of the club s innings. The Birds bullpen was responsible for only 37.8% (124.2) of the team s innings at this point last season, recording roughly 10 outs per game. This year s relievers have needed to induce about 13 outs per game. UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP. STARTER Tue. The southpaw pitched in one inning in one game. -Kellogg had an illustrious career at Arizona State University. He is one of eight Sun Devil players all-time to be named to the All-Pac-12 First Team three times, and is one of two players in school history to lead Arizona State in wins in three consecutive seasons. -A mechanical engineering major in Tempe, Kellogg still ranks 10th in school history with 28 career wins while his 3.50 career ERA is the program s 11th-lowest in the aluminum bat era. The left-hander started 47 of 48 career games, making him just the seventh pitcher in school history with at least 47 starts. -Kellogg notched 11 wins over ranked opponents (four in 2015, three in 2013 and four in 2014), including two top-five road wins over Oregon State (and three total), two top-10 wins over Oregon (one road) and two ranked wins over UCLA (one road). -Kellogg has always followed the Toronto Blue Jays. The Rogers Centre is only 45 minutes from his house, so he spent many summer afternoons there as a kid. He has always followed them because they were so close to his hometown and because they are now the only remaining Canadian team. -He tries to model his game after Cliff Lee and Brian Wilson. He models his pitching after Lee because they throw the same pitches and he feels Lee is very smart and composed on the mound. He also likes Brian Wilson because of his ability to have fun around the game while still being a great competitor on the mound SEASON -Kellogg began the year on the disabled list, and made his season debut on April 26 against Wilmington, going five innings with one run allowed. He followed that up with a complete game in game one of a doubleheader at Frederick on May 2. He yielded two runs, one earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings SEASON -Over his final six starts, Kellogg had three starts in which he did not allow a run, and three starts in which he only allowed one run. All told, his ERA in a starting role during that stretch was 0.84 (3 ER in 32.1 IP, 22 H, 5 BB, 29 K). VS.
