1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (26-22) at Carolina Mudcats (25-22) Friday, May 26, :00 p.m. Game No. 49 Road Game No. 25 Five County Stadium Zebulon, N.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn LHP Ryan Kellogg (1-2, 5.06 ERA) vs. RHP Corbin Burnes (4-0, 1.00 ERA) vs. THE MUDCATS 2017 vs. Mudcats in Myrtle Beach in Carolina All-Time vs. Carolina (.664) 2016 Regular Season vs. Carolina in Myrtle Beach in Carolina RECORD-BREAKING INNING LEADS TO SWEEP Myrtle Beach plated 11 runs in Thursday s first inning - the most the Pelicans have scored in a single frame in recorded team history (through the 2005 season) - en route to an 11-4 win over Winston-Salem that netted the Birds a series sweep. Myrtle Beach captured a 4-1 lead on Eloy Jimenez s grand slam. Jesse Hodges and Robert Garcia added RBI singles soon after to make it 6-1. An error brought in another run and then P.J. Higgins knocked in another tally to make it 8-1. Daniel Spingola hit an RBI ground out before Jimenez drove in his fifth run of the inning with an RBI single. Eddy Martinez then notched an RBI single to cap the scoring at Oscar De La Cruz struck out 10 in 5.2 strong innings. ELEVENTH HEAVEN Down 1-0, Myrtle Beach began the home half of the first inning with 11 men reaching consecutively to spark the biggest inning in recorded team history. When it was all said and done, 16 men had come to plate to help the Pelicans cash in 11 runs, the most in any frame for the Birds since at least the 2005 season. Myrtle Beach s previous high for runs in an inning was nine, set on two occasions: On May 15, 2013, the Pelicans enjoyed a nine-run third inning in a 9-2 romp at Winston-Salem. Myrtle Beach also banged in nine runs in the eighth inning at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark against Kinston on August 4, 2008, backing a rehab start from Atlanta Braves star Tom Glavine in a 17-2 win. The Carolina League record for runs in an inning is 17, set three times, and most recently completed by Winston-Salem on June 11, 1953 against Reidsville. THE CHICKS DIG IT Eloy Jimenez bashed a grand slam in Thursday s win, marking the 38th home run of the year for Myrtle Beach, the third-most in the Carolina League. Those 38 bombs are already the most Myrtle Beach has hit in the first two months of a season since 2014, when the club racked up 51 over April and May, helped in large part by 21 alone from Joey Gallo. Outside of that Gallo-aided 2014 team, the last time the Pelicans launched this many bombs in a campaign s first two months was 2009, when they crushed 43 in April and May. Obviously, this year s Birds still have five games left in the month to catch the 2009 squad. FISH AND CHIPS Myrtle Beach moves on from their three-game sweep of Winston-Salem by heading up to Zebulon, N.C. to take on the Carolina Mudcats. A year ago, the Pelicans enjoyed unprecedented success against the Muddies, going 20-8 against Carolina. Those 20 triumphs are the Pelicans most against any opponent in recorded Pelicans history, which dates back through Myrtle Beach s previous high for wins over an opponent in one season was 16, also over the Mudcats in IT IS HOW YOU START In a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three times. During that span, Myrtle Beach s rotation gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasting roughly 4.0 frames per outing. However, since that point, it appears that the Birds starters are turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in 12 of their past 14 games, with the two exceptions being spot starts from Casey Bloomquist and Kyle Miller in the back end of doubleheaders. The club s starters have allowed just 30 runs, 24 earned, on 59 hits in 79.0 innings (2.73 ERA, 6.7 H/9) during this time frame, lasting 5.2 frames per outing. A CHICAGO RIVALRY DOWN SOUTH Since the start of the 2015 campaign, including the postseason, Myrtle Beach and Winston-Salem have met in 61 contests, with the Birds owning a (.607) record against the Dash. However, that record does not completely sell how close the two clubs have played against each other. Incredibly, 41 of those 61 games have been decided by three runs or less. The Pelicans have a significant edge in those games, going (.707) against the Dash in those contests decided by slim margins. Myrtle Beach went 14-3 (.824) against the Dash in 2016 in games decided by no more than three runs, and they re off to a 4-0 start in those contests this season. PELICAN POINT Myrtle Beach enters play on Friday just two games back of Buies Creek in the Southern Division. The Birds are just a half-game ahead of Carolina for second place. The southpaw pitched in one inning in one game. -Kellogg had an illustrious career at Arizona State University. He is one of eight Sun Devil players all-time to be named to the All-Pac-12 First Team three times, and is one of two players in school history to lead Arizona State in wins in three consecutive seasons. -A mechanical engineering major in Tempe, Kellogg still ranks 10th in school history with 28 career wins while his 3.50 career ERA is the program s 11th-lowest in the aluminum bat era. The left-hander started 47 of 48 career games, making him just the seventh pitcher in school history with at least 47 starts. -Kellogg notched 11 wins over ranked opponents (four in 2015, three in 2013 and four in 2014), including two top-five road wins over Oregon State (and three total), two top-10 wins over Oregon (one road) and two ranked wins over UCLA (one road). The Rogers Centre is only 45 minutes from his house, so he spent many summer afternoons there as a kid. He has always followed them because they were so close to his hometown and because they are now the only remaining Canadian team. -He tries to model his game after Cliff Lee and Brian Wilson. He models his pitching after Lee because they throw the same pitches and he feels Lee is very smart and composed on the mound. He also likes Brian Wilson because of his ability to have fun around the game while still being a great competitor on the mound SEASON -Outside of one bad start on May 7 against Buies Creek, Kellogg has ceded no more than three runs in any outing. In those other four starts, he has a 2.78 ERA. -The left-hander has shown reverse platoon splits this season, with left-handed hitters posting a.857 OPS in 42 at-bats. Righties possess a.705 OPS in 65 at-bats SEASON -Over his final six starts, Kellogg had three starts in which he did not allow a run, and three starts in which he only allowed one run. All told, his ERA in a starting role during that stretch was 0.84 (3 ER in 32.1 IP, 22 H, 5 BB, 29 K). -Kellogg walked more than two batters in just three of his 24 outings, with 11 of those results with zero free passes. It was the ninth no-hitter in school history, and the first since Feb. 2, It was also the first no-hitter ever in Pac-10/12 play, according to Sun Devil athletics. -Kellogg was originally selected in the 12th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays out of Henry Street High School in Whitby.
