MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn LHP Bryan Hudson (2-1, 4.80 ERA) vs. RHP Roniel Raudes (1-1, 3.86 ERA) MYERS, MILLER LEADS BIRDS TO TWIN BILL SPLIT Behind Connor Myers and Tyson Miller, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans won Thursday s doubleheader finale 8-1 after falling 8-0 to the Carolina Mudcats in the twin bill opener. Down 1-0 in the fifth of game two, Myers cranked a two-run homer to put the Birds ahead. The Pelicans then added six runs in the sixth inning, their most in a frame all year, aided in part by a Myers two-run double. That was more than enough offense for Miller, who yielded just an unearned run on two hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked one. In the doubleheader opener, Carolina plated two in the first, four in the second and two more in the fourth to ease to an 8-0 victory. Myrtle Beach s finale win allowed the Pelicans to salvage the series. GO THE DISTANCE Myrtle Beach had lost nine of 11 going into its Friday game against Down East. Suddenly, heading into Friday s series opener at Salem, the Pelicans find themselves winners of four of their last six games. Perhaps the biggest change for the club has been their starters pitching deeper into games. Myrtle Beach starting pitchers have tossed at least five innings in nine of their last 10 games, yielding 30 runs, 23 earned, on 55 hits in a total of 53.0 frames for a 3.91 ERA (9.3 H/9, 13 BB, 2.2 BB/9, 52 K, 8.8 K/9). In comparison, over the season s first 11 contests, Pelicans starting pitchers recorded five innings in a start just five times. Over that span, they surrendered 42 runs, 31 earned, on 60 hits in 48.0 frames for a 5.81 ERA (10.4 H/9, 18 BB, 3.4 BB/9, 46 K, 8.6 K/9). MAN OR MACHIN? Pelicans infielder Vimael Machin got off to slow start on the season, posting just one hit in his first six games (1-for-23,.043). However, the San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico native has reached base in each of his 11 games since, including eight contests with multiple trips on the basepaths. Over this 11- game stretch Machin is for 11-for-33 with four doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs and 16 walks, slashing.333/.551/.667 (1.275 OPS). Impressive considering his batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is just.225, far below the baseball-wide average of.300, Machin leads the Pelicans in both wrc+ (136) and woba (.387). He has walked 17 times this season against only 11 strikeouts. APRIL SHOWERS, MAY FLOWERS? Myrtle Beach lost in Thursday s doubleheader opener with Carolina 8-0, marking the fifth time the Birds have been shut out this season. Thus, just 21 games into the campaign, the Pelicans are just one blanking shy of matching their total of six from the entirety of the 2017 season. That 8-0 defeat was also the 14th for Myrtle Beach in April. With three games to go in the month, the Pelicans are in danger of losing 15 games in the season s opening month for the first time in recorded club history (through the 2005 season). KEEPING THOSE TURNTABLES SPINNIN Already the author of a catch that appeared on SportsCenter s Top 10 Plays, Myrtle Beach outfielder D.J. Wilson has improved significantly at the plate since the start of the season. The Canton, Ohio native does boast a 12-game on-base streak to start his campaign, tied for the second-longest active streak in the Carolina League solely from the 2018 season. Wilson has also notched at least one hit in each of his last five games, batting a combined 7-for-19 (.368) with one double, one triple and four walks. That has helped Wilson s season on-base percentage surge to.404, the second-best mark on the club. FREE AS A BIRD Carolina stole another base against the Pelicans on Thursday, continuing a trend against Myrtle Beach s batteries. Opponents are 27-for-31 (87.1 percent) in swiping bases against the Birds this season, the worst such mark in the Carolina League. In fact, that 12.9 percent caught stealing rate is the worst in the circuit since at least the 2005 season. Opponents are 23-for-their-last-24 in stolen base attempts against Myrtle Beach, including a run of 20 consecutive successful swipes at one point. PELICAN POINTS Myrtle Beach is just 2-8 in games decided by three runs or less this season. The Birds went (.535) in those contests a year ago... Pelicans hurlers are throwing an average of 17.3 pitches per inning, the third-highest total in High-A. Potomac s 12.7 deliveries per frame actually leads all of Minor League Baseballl. The Cubs also went to one of Hudson s Alton High basketball practices, and even would watch his games streamed on YouTube. At 6-foot-8, Hudson is from Alton, Illinois, a place known for big people. In fact, Robert Wadlow, also known as the Alton Giant and the Giant of Illinois, is the tallest person ever in recorded history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. Wadlow was born and raised in Alton, Illinois. -Alton is roughly a 40-minute drive from St. Louis, making Hudson a St. Louis Cardinals fan when he was growing up. -Hudson is the highest player drafted from the Southwestern Illinois area since Highland High School pitcher Jake Odorizzi was drafted in 2008 in the first round by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 32nd overall pick.
