1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (68) at Down East Wood Ducks (77) Thursday, April 20, :00 p.m. Game No. 15 Road Game No. 8 Grainger Stadium Kinston, N.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Casey Bloomquist (02, 5.40 ERA) vs. LHP Jeffrey Springs (01, 3.86 ERA) PELICANS DROP RUBBER MATCH WITH ASTROS Bryant Flete launched a tworun home run in the first inning, but a threerun fifth helped Buies Creek win Wednesday s rubber match 43. The Birds held a 20 lead until a wild pitch brought home the Astros first run of the game in the fifth inning. Myles Straw laced a triple in the frame, and Osvaldo Duarte s RBI single put Buies Creek ahead 32. The Astros added an insurance run on Eduardo De Oleo s RBI triple in the sixth to make it 42. Jesse Hodges lined a single to bring in Matt Rose in the seventh, but the Pelicans could get no closer. Robert Garcia notched two hits to lead the Birds and Pedro Araujo worked two perfect innings out of the bullpen. DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS While errors aren t exactly the most precise way of judging defense for a multitude of reasons, Myrtle Beach s defense has only committed eight errors through the first 14 games of the season five fewer than secondplace Down East. In fact, the Wood Ducks are as close to last place as they are to the Birds. Perhaps a better way to measure a club s defense is by defensive efficiency, which measures how many balls put in play (anything but a home run, strikeout and walk) that are turned into outs. This year, the Pelicans have turned 69.6% of balls hit into play into outs. The figure ranks third in the Carolina League behind Buies Creek (70.9%) and WinstonSalem (70.5%). One other interesting note about Myrtle Beach s defense is that opponents have tried 28 steals against them, tied for the secondmost in the league. The Birds have thrown out 28.6% of base stealers so far, which ranks seventh in the circuit. STILL SORTING THINGS OUT In addition to sample size, past performance and luck, there is one more factor for optimism for Myrtle Beach s offense: situational hitting. In fact, the Pelicans 43 loss on Wednesday demonstrated this perfectly. The Birds only scored three runs partly because the club went 1for8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. While not great, the Pelicans overall hitting line of.219/.296/.333 mysteriously drops to.198/.276/.261 with runners in scoring position. The good news is that the Pelicans have just 122 plate appearances with runners in scoring position, and nearly every team across baseball winds up posting similar numbers in those two departments by the end of the season. OFFENSIVE PRISONERS OF AZKABAN Myrtle Beach s offense has struggled to begin the season, with the Pelicans 45 runs are last in the 10team circuit. Despite Myrtle Beach averaging a paltry 3.2 runs per game, fewer than half of Salem s leagueleading 6.6, there is optimism for the Pelicans offense. Right off the bat, the small sample size of 14 games is much too small to make a determination of true talent level. Second, most of the Birds offense hails from a LowA South Bend club that finished among the top three clubs in the 16team Midwest League in average (.266), onbase percentage (.333), slugging percentage (.374), OPS (.708) and runs (633). The third reason the Birds offense should come around relates to luck: Myrtle Beach s batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is just.275, well below the yearly league average of.300. That number almost certainly will regress back towards the mean as the season wears on, meaning the Pelicans offense should start scoring more runs as that happens. HE WHO CAN BE NAMED Even though he has not drawn a walk so far in the entire season, Matt Rose has been one of the most lethal hitters in the Carolina League. The Palm Bay, Florida native bashed his third home run of the season in Sunday s loss to Lynchburg. That mark is tied for third in the league. Rose has averaged one home run every atbats, which places him third in the circuit. He has also driven in 10 runs, ranking sixth in the league. PELICAN POINTS Dating back to last season, reliever Jordan Minch has gone each of the past 18 appearances without allowing a run. Minch last allowed a tally on May 24, Over that span, engaging in 18.1 innings, the southpaw has yielded 12 hits, notching 15 strikeouts against seven walks... Justin Steele s Tuesday performance, when he did not surrender any runs over 5.1 scoreless frames, was the first time a Birds starter reached the sixth inning all season. Only one Myrtle Beach starter has coughed up more than three earned runs in a start this year... The Birds are batting.241/.313/.357 against the league s righthanded pitchers. Versus southpaws, albeit in just 85 plate appearances, they re hitting.105/.285/.158, netting just three extrabase hits. At Down East, the Pelicans kick off their series facing three Wood Ducks lefthanders. UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP. STARTER Fri.
