The game was scoreless into the sixth inning, as Pelicans starter Keegan Thompson dueled with both Muddies starter Nathan Kirby and reliever Victor Diaz. Thompson ceded just two hits in five scoreless innings, but with the right-hander out of the game, Carolina tacked on the game s first run in the sixth on Ronnie Gideon s RBI single. The score would remain 1-0 until the eighth, when Jhonny Pereda registered an RBI single to knot the score at one. However, Hiura lined his walk-off single with the bases loaded in the ninth to win it for the Mudcats. GO THE DISTANCE Myrtle Beach had lost nine of 11 going into its Friday game against Down East. Suddenly, heading into Thursday s doubleheader with Carolina, the Pelicans find themselves winners of three of their last four games. Perhaps the biggest change for the club has been their starters pitching deeper into games. Myrtle Beach starters have pitched at least five innings in eight straight games, yielding 21 runs, 17 earned, on 41 hits in a total of 43.0 frames for a 3.56 ERA (8.6 H/9, 12 BB, 2.5 BB/9, 45 K, 9.4 K/9). In comparison, over the season s first 11 contests, Pelican starting pitchers recorded five innings in a start just five times. Over that span, they surrendered 42 runs, 31 earned, on 60 hits in 48.0 frames for a 5.81 ERA (10.4 H/9, 18 BB, 3.4 BB/9, 46 K, 8.6 K/9). FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER Myrtle Beach s 5-4 Saturday win over Down East marked their first win of the season in a game decided by one run. However, in their next close game, the Birds followed that up with a 2-1 defeat to Carolina on Wednesday. Thus, the Pelicans are a woeful 2-8 (.200) in games decided by three runs or fewer, the worst such mark in the Carolina League. That being said, records that tend to go haywire in either a positive or negative direction in these narrowly-decided contests can often be misleading, as most clubs tend to finish with a record near.500 in games decided by three runs or less. Sure enough, the 2017 Pelicans went (.535) in such contests. KEEPING THOSE TURNTABLES SPINNIN Already the author of a catch that appeared on SportsCenter s Top 10 Plays, Myrtle Beach outfielder D.J. Wilson has improved significantly at the plate since the start of the season. The Canton, Ohio native does boast a 12-game on-base streak to start his campaign, tied for the second-longest active streak in the Carolina League solely from the 2018 season. Wilson has also notched at least one hit in each of the last five games, batting a combined 7-for-19 (.368) with one double, one triple and four walks. That has helped Wilson s season on-base percentage surge to.404, the best mark on the club. MAN OR MACHIN? Pelicans infielder Vimael Machin got off to slow start on the season, posting just one hit in his first six games (1-for-23,.043). However, the San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico native has reached base in each of his 10 games since, including seven contests with multiple trips on the basepaths. Over this 10- game stretch Machin is for 10-for-30 with four doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs and 15 walks, slashing.333/.556/.667 (1.275 OPS). Impressive considering his batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is just.225, far below the baseball-wide average of.300, Machin leads the Pelicans in both wrc+ (136) and woba (.387). He has walked 16 times this season against only 11 strikeouts. FREE AS A BIRD Carolina stole two bases against the Pelicans on Wednesday, continuing a trend against Myrtle Beach s batteries. Opponents are 26-for-30 (86.7 percent) in swiping bases against the Birds this season, the worst such mark in the Carolina League. In fact, that 13.3 percent caught stealing rate is the worst in the circuit since at least the 2005 season. Prior to Keston Hiura being caught stealing in the first inning of Wednesday s game, opponents had swiped 20 consecutive bags successfully. PELICAN POINTS The Birds are playing their second doubleheader of the year on Thursday. Myrtle Beach split a twin bill with Frederick on April 8. Carolina swept a doubleheader with Winston-Salem that same day... The Pelicans continue their road trip by starting a three-game set at Salem on Friday. The left-hander was named a Northwest League All-Star and a two-time Northwest League Pitcher of the Week. -Paulino was named the Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July of Between Eugene and South Bend, Paulino worked to a 1.50 ERA with 31 strikeouts in just 30 innings pitched SEASON 2017 SEASON -After a very slow start to the season, Paulino significantly improved as the campaign went along. In the second half of the 2017 season, Paulino pitched in 15 games, including 11 starts. He went 5-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 73.0 innings (70 H, 19 BB, 59 K). The southpaw was 2-2 with a 6.04 ERA in 12 first-half outings, 11 of them starts (50.2 IP, 55 H, 23 BB, 35 K). -Paulino was more effective working out of the stretch. In 248 plate appearances with runners on, opponents batted.249/.310/.371 (.681 OPS) against Paulino. In comparison, in 279 plate appearances with the bases empty, opposing hitters slashed.280/.355/.400 (.755 OPS) SEASON -Of his 13 outings between Eugene and South Bend, Paulino ceded more than three earned runs in an outing just once. He finished 11 outings with no more than two earned runs allowed SEASON -Paulino split the season in the starting rotation and the bullpen. The righthander yielded just three hits and one walk against seven strikeouts over five innings in a doubleheader finale win on April 8 over Frederick SEASON -Miller was much better as a starting pitcher with South Bend. Over 20 starts, he registered a 3-7 record with a 4.14 ERA (91.1 IP, 91 H, 31 BB, 81 K). In eight relief appearances, Miller was 3-0 with a 5.52 ERA (29.1 IP, 31 H, 7 BB, 18 K) SEASON -On the heels of a 107-inning collegiate season, Miller was held to just 28.2 frames in his first professional campaign.
