1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (12-9) at Lynchburg Hillcats (9-9) Friday, April 28, :30 p.m. Game No. 22 Road Game No. 12 Calvin Falwell Field at Lynchburg City Stadium Lynchburg, Va. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Thomas Hatch (0-2, 4.42 ERA) vs. RHP Jared Robinson (1-2, 4.26 ERA) PELICANS SWEEP BLUE ROCKS IN SHUTOUT STYLE Jesse Hodges homered for the second straight night and Adbert Alzolay, Dillon Maples and Craig Brooks combined to shut out the Blue Rocks 4-0 on Thursday to complete the Pelicans first sweep of the season. Hodges missile put the Birds ahead 1-0 in the second. Myrtle Beach would add to that tally in the fifth on a Daniel Spingola RBI triple and a Bryant Flete RBI double. Trent Giambrone s sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 4-0. Alzolay scattered just three hits in his six blank frames, the longest a Pelicans starter has worked this year. Maples whiffed four in his two innings, and Brooks worked a perfect ninth to finish off the Blue Rocks. With the victory, Myrtle Beach has won four in a row and six of seven. AND NOW TIME FOR A VACATION TO LYNCHBURG Riding six wins in their last seven tries, including a season-high four in a row, the Pelicans make way for scenic Lynchburg, Va. and Frederick, Md. for a six-game road trip. Even though the Birds are coming off a sweep of Wilmington this trek may not be the reprieve it appears to some. The Hillcats have allowed the fewest runs in the league (70), and own the circuit s best ERA (2.83). Frederick ranks in the top half of the CL in nearly every offensive category. SELF-FULFILLING STATEMENTS Through the first 12 games of the year, Myrtle Beach scored just 36 runs (3.0 per game), by far the fewest in the Carolina League. However, the nine games have seen a resurgence for the club s offense, with the Pelicans plating 53 runs (5.9 per game). Perhaps the biggest reasons for the Birds increased offensive outputs has been regressions to the mean that often come with larger sample sizes. For example, the club s batting average on balls in play (BABIP) through 12 games was just.262, far below the.300 average that nearly every single team across every single level throughout the history of baseball has posted. Entering Game No. 22, the Pelicans now possess a.310 BABIP. In addition, the club s struggles with runners in scoring position in the early going was another big factor in a previously low-scoring offense. Now, Myrtle Beach is maybe overachieving with runners in scoring position, hitting better in those situations than they do normally. The Birds are slashing.244/.313/.371 (.684 OPS) overall, and they ve run their numbers up to.269/.333/.386 (.719 OPS) with runners in scoring position. FROM PELICANS STATS BUREAU The Pelicans scored just 36 runs through their first 12 games of the season, the 15th-fewest in all of Minor League Baseball. However, in the nine games since then, Myrtle Beach s 53 tallies are tied for the 12th-most in the minors. An interesting trend has emerged, and it seems like the Birds have decided to sacrifice their quantity of contact for their quality of contact. Myrtle Beach totaled 96 strikeouts in their first dozen contests, an average of 8.0 per game. However, in their last eight battles, the Birds have whiffed 92 times, the ninth-most in MiLB, and an average 10.2 times per game. The increase in strikeouts has also seen an increase hard contact, and not coincidentally, runs; Myrtle Beach batted.226/.301/.336 in their first 12 games, but they ve put together a.268/.329/.417 line over the last nine. The Pelicans posted 16 doubles and eight homers (1.3 and 0.7 per game, respectively) in the first 12 contests, compared to 15 doubles and eight dingers (1.7 and 0.9 per game, respectively) over the past nine. WORDS ABOUT PITCHERS Through 2017 s first 21 games, Myrtle Beach has had just two starters pitch into the sixth inning, with Adbert Alzolay s 6.0 frames on April 27 representing the longest a Birds lid-lifter has gone in any game. With Pelicans starting pitchers averaging just 4.2 innings a start, the Birds have had to rely quite a bit on the bullpen. In fact, Pelicans starters have collectively tossed only 97.0 innings, or 52.4% of the club s total (185.0 IP). The Birds bullpen has already racked up 88.0 frames (47.6%) this year. At this juncture last year, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers had accounted for 60.6% (112.0) of the club s innings. The Birds bullpen was responsible for only 39.4% (72.2) of the team s innings at this point last season, recording roughly 10 outs per game. This year s relievers have needed to induce about 13 outs per game. PELICAN POINTS Hinting at a trend, opponents have tried to steal 40 bases ubiquitously in 2017, the most attempts against any CL team. Ninth in the circuit, Myrtle Beach has thrown out 25 percent, good for slightly below average overall, of those base runners (10 CS)... The last three Pelicans pinch-hitters have yanked a hit and picked up at least one RBI, the first time in a year the Birds have ever done that in their recorded history. He will be making his professional debut with Myrtle Beach in 2017 after Chicago held him from pitching last season. -In order to acquaint him to the organization, the Cubs had him spend time with Low-A South Bend during their pennant run to have him get to know his new teammates. -Baseball America says Hatch has the Best Slider in the Cubs organization SEASON -Hatch made his professional debut on April 7 at Lynchburg, going five innings of one-hit ball. He allowed an unearned run while walking three and striking out two. -The right-hander left his April 17 start vs. Buies Creek after getting hit in the head with a line drive. Hatch did not suffer any concussion-like symptoms, and made his next start on April 22 at Down East. -Hatch has struggled as he goes through the order a second and third time. The Tulsa native has posted a 1.69 ERA (3 ER on 9 H in 16.0 IP, 5 BB, 13 K) from innings one through four, but that has swelled to a mark in the fifth inning this year (6 ER on 7 H in 2.1 IP, 4 BB, 3 K). ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES -As a redshirt sophomore in 2016, Hatch was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year, a First Team All-American by D1Baseball.com and a Third Team All-American by Baseball America. The Tulsa native went 9-3 with a 2.14 ERA in innings to lead Oklahoma State to the College World Series. -Hatch missed the entire 2015 season with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament that didn t require surgery. Instead, he redshirted and received a platelet rich plasma injection from Dr. James Andrews, opting against surgery because of the minor nature of the tear. -Born and raised in Tulsa, Hatch grew up a huge Oklahoma State fan. His father, Dean, walked on to the Cowboys baseball team, and Hatch has an uncle and two aunts who also attended Oklahoma State. Because of his ties to the Pokes, Hatch decided to pass up on offers from powers North Carolina, TCU and LSU to play in Stillwater. VS.
