1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (52-48, Second Half, Home) 1st Place, +0.5 GA, CL Southern vs. Monday, July 25, :05 p.m. TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Myrtle Beach, S.C. RHP Jeremy Null (2-4, 4.88 ERA) vs. LHP Ryan Clark (1-10, 5.63 ERA) Game #101 Second Half Game #31 Home Game #50 Game vs. Mudcats #16 MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch App TuneIn MiLB.tv Carolina Mudcats (40-60, Second Half, Road) 4th Place, 5.0 GB, CL Southern BIRDS TAKE SERIES WITH 6-4 WIN Down 4-0, the Pelicans used a six-run third inning to triumph 6-4 over Wilmington and take the four-game series. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Yasiel Balaguert cleared the bags with a double to get the scoring started. He came into score on a Daniel Spingola sacrifice fly before Tyler Pearson gave Myrtle Beach the lead with a two-run single. Jonathan Martinez rebounded from a three-run Blue Rocks first inning to allow three earned runs in 5.1 frames, his seventh start in a row with three earned runs allowed or fewer. Ryan McNeil earned his league-leading 15th save. BATS UNBROKEN Myrtle Beach s 6-4 win on Sunday marked the 14th time in 18 games that the Birds have tallied at least five runs - the first time they ve accomplished the feat since June 14-July 4, During this 18-game stretch, the Birds are hitting.267/.372/.391, well above their season line of.247/.333/.377, to score 120 runs in this span (6.7 runs per game). In other words, the Pelicans season OPS is.710, a slightly below-average mark nearly the equivalent of the Braves Nick Markakis. But in these last 18 games, their.762 OPS ranks in line with what the Rangers Nomar Mazara has posted this season. THE QUEST FOR 1,900 Now in his 28th season as a Minor League manager, Pelicans skipper Buddy Bailey earned the 1,900th victory of his career last night. According to Baseball Reference, the Madison Heights, Va. native ranks ranks 18th in wins all-time among Minor League managers with an 1,900-1,764 (.519) record. Bailey, who s managing career began with Rookie-level Pulaski in 1983, is seven wins shy of sole possession of 17th place, 17 shy of 16th and 19 shy of the top 15. Stan Wasiak, who piloted in the Dodgers, Tigers and White Sox systems from , is MiLB s all-time managerial wins leader with a 2,530-2,314 (.522) record. FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER The Pelicans have played a league-high 68 games decided by three runs or less this season. Considering nearly every team across baseball finishes at or near.500 in close games throughout a season, it is surprising to see that the Birds have a record in these contests. SINGING A LITTLE BIT OFF-TUNE In an 8-1 win over Potomac on July 1, Erick Leal fired five shutout innings. That marked Myrtle Beach s 13th start in 15 games in which their starter allowed fewer than three earned runs, including their sixth without surrendering even a single run. During that 15-game stretch, Pelicans starters collectively posted a 3.24 ERA (30 ER on 84 H in 83.1 IP). However, since that point, the Birds starting staff has struggled. Myrtle Beach has a grand total of seven quality start in their last 21 games, with just seven pitchers making it through the sixth inning. Over this span, Pelican starters have a 5.21 ERA (61 ER in IP). With 126 hits yielded over that time frame, Myrtle s lid-lifters are giving up 10.8 H/9. THE MONEYBALL APPROACH Charcer Burks went 0-for-5 Sunday, snapping his 23-game on-base streak - the longest active streak in the league, tied for the second-longest in the circuit in 2016 and also the longest for any Pelican this season. During the streak, Burks batted.297/.402/.440 (27-for-91, 7 2B, 2 HR, 12 RBIs, 11 BB). Lynchburg s Greg Allen has the longest on-base streak this season at 27 games, while Myrtle Beach s Chesny Young set a Carolina League record last season with a 44-game mark during which he batted.337/.395/.404. WALKING THE WALK One of the hallmarks of the Cubs organizational philosophy is to control the strike zone both offensively and defensively. The Pelicans have certainly demonstrated that in Myrtle Beach has drawn 393 walks, the fifth-most of any Minor League Baseball team. In addition, the Birds have handed out just 275 free passes, which places them in a tie for 21st in MiLB. Bird pitchers have walked three or fewer in 39 of their last 51 games, with their hitters earning more free passes than their opponents in 37 of those contests. PELICAN POINTS Infielder Yasiel Balaguert earned Carolina League Player of the Week honors for July 18-24, the league office announced Monday. Balaguert batted.423/.464/.731 with 5 2B, HR and 14 RBIs, recording five multi-hit performances. The honor is Balaguert s second weekly award this season (May 16-22)... INF Gleyber Torres and OF Rashad Crawford were traded to the Yankees Monday in the Aroldis Chapman deal. vs. THE MUDCATS 2016 vs. Mudcats in Myrtle Beach in Carolina All-Time vs. Carolina (.640) 2015 Regular Season vs. Carolina in Myrtle Beach in Carolina PELICANS BY THE NUMBERS Record Current Streak...W3 Runs Scored (4.3 per game)/5th Runs Allowed (4.1 per game)/2nd-fewest Run Differential...+22/4th Pythagorean Record Southern Division Standing/GB...1st/+0.5 Current Standings Streak...1st, 1 day (7/24-present) Long Standings Streak... 2nd, 61 days (4/18-6/19) Series Record Pelicans sweeps...2 (four-game, vs. POT, 6/4-7) Sweeps of the Pelicans...1 (two-game, vs. SAL, 4/29-30) Batting Average/Rank /6th On-Base Percentage /3rd Slugging Percentage /6th OPS /6th Strikeouts /3rd-most Walks...393/2nd-most Hits /6th Doubles /6th Triples... 29/3rd Home Runs... 63/3rd Stolen Bases...134/2nd Defensive Efficiency (MLB avg: ~.705) Errors...97 FIP ERA /2nd Strikeouts...701/3rd-fewest Walks...275/Fewest Hits Allowed /3rd-most Home Runs...54/3rd-fewest WHIP /1st Starters W-L Starters ERA Bullpen W-L Bullpen ERA Jeffrey Baez:.810 OPS vs. LHP,.531 OPS vs. RHP; 4th in CL in SB (32) Yasiel Balaguert: Hits in eight of nine (14-for-38,.368/.442/.579, 5 2B, HR, 10 RBIs, 5 BB) David Bote: 32-for-90,.356/.448/.500, 7 2B, 2 HR, 11 RBIs, 13 BB, 2 HBP in last 27 games Charcer Burks: Reached in 27 of last 29 (32-for-113,.283/.386/.407, 8 2B, 2 HR, 11 RBIs, 17 BB, 2 HBP) Erick Castillo: 3-for-23 (.130), 6 K in last six games BIRDS NEST NUGGETS Andrew Ely: Hits in five of six (7-for-25,.280, 2B, HR, 3 RBIs, 2 BB) Jesse Hodges: 2-for-11, BB in 1st 3 G w/mb (.287/.349/ B, 5 3B, 21 RBIs in 61 G w/low-a SB) Tyler Pearson: 3-for-8 (.375) in last 2G (3-for-22 (.136) skid in prev. seven games) Ian Rice: Reached in five straight (3-for-17, 2B, HR, 4 RBIs, 5 BB) Daniel Spingola: Reached in three straight (3-for-15,.200, 2 RBIs, 3 BB) UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP.
