1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (6-7, 3-3 Road) T-2nd Place, CL Southern DASH WALK-OFF ON BIRDS TO EVEN SERIES Home runs from Gleyber Torres and Yasiel Balaguert helped put Myrtle Beach ahead 5-2 going to the bottom of the eighth. However, the Dash rallied to tie the game with three runs in the eighth, before Toby Thomas laced a walk-off double to win it 6-5 in the ninth for Winston-Salem. The Pelicans saw their three-game winning streak end and went back under.500 on the season. A WINSTON-SALEM GOOD LUCK CHARM? The Pelicans popped just three home runs through their first 11 games of the year. However, unless they have located a secret Winston-Salem good luck tradition, they have suddenly found their power this season. The Birds blasted four homers through the first two games of their series with Winston-Salem. Ian Happ smashed his first two bombs of the season Monday, with Gleyber Torres and Yasiel Balaguert each registering their first homers of the year on Tuesday. THE ONLY IAN A slow start to the season saw Ian Happ go 0-for-8 with four strikeouts and three errors in the campaign s first couple games. However, since then, the former Cincinnati Bearcat has been one of the toughest outs at the plate, and better defensive players in the Carolina League. Over the last 11 games, Happ is batting.349/.429/.605, including a 4-for-5, two-home run, four-rbi contest Monday at Winston-Salem - the first multi-homer game of his professional career. In the field, the converted outfielder has played in six straight errorless contests. HITS THAT KEEP ECHOING Myrtle Beach leadoff man Rashad Crawford has begun each of his last three starts with an extra-base hit. The Macon, Ga. native tripled to begin Saturday s contest at Carolina, doubled to start Sunday s contest against the Muddies and then followed that up with a leadoff triple Monday at Winston-Salem. Oddly, Crawford has only scored once following any of his leadoff extra-base hits during the stretch. However, he is 5-for-12 in that span and has recorded at least one hit in all but two contests this season - one of which he did not come up to the plate because of an injury sustained in the top of the first inning on 4/9. WALKING OUR WAY Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein has talked extensively about his philosophy of controlling the strike zone from both sides of the ball. Many began to doubt that philosophy during his first few years in Chicago, even after it helped produce a couple of World Series championships with Boston. However, the Cubs 97-win season in 2015 was the product of the mantra that has clearly permeated throughout the Cubs system, even down to Myrtle Beach. Pelicans pitchers have walked only 34 batters in innings (2.7 BB/9), the fewest of any team in the Carolina League - and one of the biggest reasons the club leads the circuit in ERA (3.14). And on the offensive side of the ball, the Pelicans 59 free passes rank fourth in all of Minor League Baseball. However, errors are ultimately a subjective decision by the official scorer, and can penalize a player for reaching a difficult ball, but does not invoke any sort of penalty for lack of range. Thus, it is not necessarily an objective stat. Defensive efficiency is a way to track how many balls in play the defense turns into outs, an accurate measure s of a team s defensive ability and range. According to the Pelicans analytics department, Myrtle Beach has turned 72.6% of balls in play this season into outs. For context, Toronto led MLB in defensive efficiency last year at 72.1%. BIRDS ON THE POND During a five-game stretch from April 11-15, the Pelicans were just 9-for-48 (.188) with 43 men left on (13 runs scored). However, the club has seen positive regression back to the mean with runners in scoring position over the last four games. During that span, Myrtle Beach is hitting.345 (15-for-44) with runners in scoring position, leaving 30 men on total. Thus, the Pelicans batting lines with runners on and runners in scoring position are starting to line up. The club is hitting.259/.339/.371 with runners on base, and.250/.336/.347 with runners in scoring position. Nearly every team across all levels of baseball winds up posting similar numbers in those two departments by the end of the season. The 2015 Pelicans hit.262/.354/.380 with runners on and.264/.362/.372 with runners in scoring position. CRAZY WIN PROBABILITY CHARTS The only teams in the Carolina League with parent clubs in Chicago have developed quite the rivalry of late. Myrtle Beach and Winston-Salem battled to nearly a draw in 2015, with the Pelicans taking 15 of the 29 meetings between the clubs, including the bestof-three Southern Division Championship Series. In those games, the Birds outscored the Dash by a microscopic margin. True to form, their first five contests this year have all been decided by two runs or less. Thus, in their last 34 meetings dating back to the beginning of last season, the clubs have played 24 games decided by three runs or less, including 12 one-run contests. In fact, including the postseason, 20 of the last 24 contests between the clubs have been decided by no more than three runs. The Pelicans are against the Dash in games decided by three runs or less, and 5-7 in one-run finishes. JONATHAN B. GOODE MARTINEZ Jonathan Martinez did not allow a hit through the first four innings Tuesday against Winston-Salem, but the Dash were able to scratch out a couple of runs in the fifth frame. Martinez wound up allowing just those two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings in a no-decision. Thus, dating back to last season, has surrendered just six runs in 49.0 innings (1.10 ERA) over his last nine outings, eight starts. During that span, the Venezuelan right-hander has fanned 25 while walking 11 hitters. Since July 18, 2014, his final outing in the Dodgers organization, Martinez has allowed three runs or fewer in all but one of his 30 starts (161.1 IP, 118 H, 34 BB, 88 K).
