1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (34-25) vs. Carolina Mudcats (32-26) Thursday, June 8, :05 p.m. Game No. 60 Home Game No. 29 TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Myrtle Beach, S.C. MiLB.tv MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Adbert Alzolay (5-1, 2.90 ERA) vs. RHP Freddy Peralta (0-3, 6.11 ERA) BIRDS BLANK ASTROS 2-0, WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT Ryan Kellogg fired six innings of two-hit ball to help the Pelicans shut out Buies Creek for the second straight, completing a three-game sweep of the Astros with a 2-0 triumph. Kellogg yielded to Pedro Araujo and Jordan Minch, who combined to work scoreless seventh and eighth innings. Dillon Maples worked a perfect ninth for his third save of the season, sealing the club s sixth straight win and 11th triumph in the last 14 games. Myrtle Beach scored the game s only runs in the fourth inning. Daniel Spingola walked to begin the frame before Eloy Jimenez doubled him in. After advancing to third on a fly out, Jimenez raced in to score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. NO SOUP FOR YOU Myrtle Beach went the final 20 innings of their series at Buies Creek without allowing a run, posting consecutive shutouts in the process. The Pelicans had not recorded back-to-back shutouts since August 5-6, 2014, when the Birds blanked Wilmington 2-0 and 5-0. Myrtle Beach also went 20 straight innings from August 5-7 without allowing a run. That is the only other time in recorded Pelicans history (through the 2005 season) that Myrtle Beach has posted back-to-back shutouts in a non-doubleheader. The Birds also hadn t ever won back-to-back games by scoring no more than three runs in their recorded history. GAME OF THRONES Over their run of a league-high six consecutive postseason appearances, the Pelicans have won the Southern Division in six of the 12 halves. With a record right now, Myrtle Beach is perched atop the division, but just 1.5 games in front of Carolina and 2.0 up on Buies Creek. Over this magical run for the Pelicans, the club has seen Carolina League division winners total an average of exactly 41 wins per half (984 wins over 24 halves between the two divisions). That means that over the half s final 11 games, the Birds would have to go 7-4 (.636) to get to 41 wins. In that scenario, for the Pelicans to win the division, Carolina, which is only playing 69 games this half due to a cancellation, would need to finish at least 9-2 to catch the Birds. Buies Creek would also need to go 9-2 for at least a tie. BROKEN BATS The Pelicans offense has really struggled this season, ranking dead last in the league in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS. The Birds also rank no better than fourth in any other offensive category besides home runs (3rd). However, Myrtle Beach places fourth in runs scored, which means the Birds are certainly outperforming their underlying offensive numbers. Perhaps the biggest reason for the Pelicans ability to cash in more runs than expected with their offensive statistics is hitting with runners in scoring position. The Birds are batting just.243/.304/.370 (.674 OPS) overall. However, with runners in scoring position, that line magically rises to.272/.332/.394 (.726 OPS). IT IS HOW YOU START In a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three times. During that span, Myrtle Beach s rotation gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasting roughly 4.0 frames per outing. However, since that point, the Birds starters are turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in 22 of their past 25 games, with the three exceptions being a spot start from Casey Bloomquist and two more from Kyle Miller. The club s starters have allowed just 50 runs, 42 earned, on 109 hits in innings (2.69 ERA, 7.0 H/9) during this time frame, lasting 5.2 frames per outing. NO WALK IN THE PARK On May 22, the Pelicans walked seven Salem hitters, pushing their season total to 151, an average of 3.4 per game and the third-most in the league at the time. In the 14 games since, the Birds have issued just 31 free passes, an average just 2.2 per contest. That has pushed Myrtle Beach from the third-most total walks to the second-fewest in the circuit. Opponents have strolled to first more than twice in a contest in just three of the 14 games during this stretch. PELICAN POINT With 11 wins in their last 14 games, the Pelicans are on their best run since winning 12 of 14 to close the 2016 season from August 21-September 5. Alzolay hails from San Felix, Venezuela, which is actually part of Ciudad Guayana. San Felix makes up the old town at the east while Puerto Ordaz is a new town at the west, lying on the Caroní and Orinoco Rivers and the site of the Llovizna Falls. -Ciudad Guayana was actually founded multiple times in different places, due to the continuous attacks of pirates and conquerors, which destroyed it as they went down the Orinoco River in search of El Dorado. In 1618, when he was near the old Guiana, an English expedition sent by Walter Raleigh sacked and destroyed the city entirely. In 1764, the residents were relocated to Angostura, now Ciudad Bolivar, due to the continuous attacks of English and Dutch pirates. The last foundation took place at its original site on July 2, 1961 and was called Ciudad Guayana SEASON -The Pelicans Opening Day starter, Alzolay went five innings in a 4-2 win over Lynchburg on April 6. He struck out five and walked two, while allowing two runs on five hits. -Alzolay has allowed more than three earned runs in a start just once all season. Over his last nine starts, he has worked 50.2 innings, ceding 15 runs, 14 earned, on 38 hits for a 2.49 ERA (6.7 H/9, 46 K, 8 BB). -In game one of a doubleheader at Winston-Salem on May 10, Alzolay came within two outs of a no-hitter before an infield single by Louis Silverio broke up the bid. Alzolay settled for a complete-game shutout, yielding two hits and three walks against three strikeouts in seven innings. -The right-hander has shown some platoon splits so far this year. Right-handed batters have posted just a.568 OPS in 128 at-bats, with lefties registering a.640 OPS in 91 at-bats SEASON -Alzolay was named a Midwest League Midseason All-Star. -He fared slightly better against right-handed batters in 2016, holding them to a.652 OPS compared to that of.687 for lefties. -Alzolay s ERA from innings one through four was a tidy 3.14 (29 ER in 83.0 IP, 73 H, 17 BB, 52 K). However, from the fifth inning on, it was 6.99 (29 ER in 37.1 IP, 46 H, 11 BB, 29 K) SEASON -Alzolay was named Northwest League Pitcher of the Week for July 27-August 2 after he fired six no-hit innings in a July 30 start at Spokane. -He was lethal in 2015, limiting lefties to a.179 average and.461 OPS in 56 at-bats. Righties hit.151 with a.502 OPS in 126 at-bats. That helped him finish tied for the team lead with six wins SEASON -Struggled in limited time in 2014, with lefties batting.300 with a.678 OPS in 40 at-bats. Righties hit.297, but with a.908 OPS in 64 at-bats SEASON -Allowed more than one earned run in just one of his 15 outings all season. In that lone appearance, he gave up two earned runs in a five-inning start on July 5 against the VSL Tigers. VS.
