1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (44-28, 1-1) vs. Down East Wood Ducks (25-46, 1-1) Saturday, June 24, :05 p.m. Game No. 73 Second Half Game No. 3 Home Game No. 38 TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Myrtle Beach, S.C. The CW21 MiLB.tv MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Mike Rucker (1-1, 1.73 ERA) vs. RHP Richelson Pena (4-3, 3.36 ERA) EARLY WOODIES ONSLAUGHT LEADS TO 14-6 LOSS The Myrtle Beach pitching staff struggled Friday in a 14-6 defeat to Down East at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Wood Ducks plated four runs in the first inning, two in the second and five in the third to grab an 11-0 advantage. Down East scored in the first six frames to go up Myrtle Beach plated three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to make it 14-6, but the Birds could get no closer. The 20 combined runs on 30 combined hits were the most in any Pelicans contest this season. In addition, the 14 runs the Birds surrendered were the most by Myrtle Beach pitching in a single game since losing 14-5 to Lynchburg on June 14, FOR STARTERS In a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three times. During that span, Myrtle Beach s rotation gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasting roughly 4.0 frames per outing. However, since that point, the Birds starters are turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in 31 of their past 38 games, with five of those seven exceptions coming in spot starts from the bullpen. Over that time frame, the club s starters have allowed just 72 runs, 61 earned, on 168 hits in innings (2.61 ERA, 7.2 H/9) during this time frame, lasting 5.2 frames per outing. Thanks to this run of success, Myrtle Beach s starting pitching has won 12 of their last 16 decisions, padding their record from on May 24 to today. BROKEN BATS The Pelicans offense has really struggled this season, ranking at or near the bottom of the league in average, OBP, SLG and OPS. The Birds also rank no better than seventh in any other offensive category besides home runs (second). However, Myrtle Beach places fifth in runs scored, which means the Birds are certainly outperforming their underlying numbers. Perhaps the biggest reason for the Pelicans ability to cash in more runs than expected with their offensive statistics is hitting with runners in scoring position. The Birds are batting just.243/.307/.371 (.677 OPS) overall. However, with runners in scoring position, that line magically rises to.259/.321/.384 (.705 OPS). SERIES-US BLACK So far, the Pelicans and Wood Ducks have split the first two contests of their four-game set. Thus, Myrtle Beach would need to win the final two battles to take the series. If the Birds can do that, it would be their seventh straight series win. Myrtle Beach hasn t won seven consecutive sets since 2008, when they took seven in a row from July 17-August 9. PEN PALS The Pelicans bullpen struggled Friday, but that s been the only blip on an otherwise extraordinary run. Dating back to June 5, Myrtle Beach s relievers have not surrendered any earned runs in 12 of the last 15 games, including eight of the past 10 contests. Over that 15-game span, the Birds bullpen has yielded just 11 runs, eight earned, on 31 hits (5.1 H/9) in 54.2 innings for a 1.32 ERA. Myrtle Beach relievers have whiffed 56 (9.2 K/9) and walked just 17 (2.8 BB/9) since June 5. APRIL SHOWERS, MAY FLOWERS, JUNE POWERS Myrtle Beach s 16-3 start to the month of June is the best record in the month of any team in Minor League Baseball. It is also the club s best start to any month in recorded Pelicans history (through the 2005 season), besting last season s 15-4 start to the month of August. During this year s June, the Birds own a 2.18 ERA, the fourth-best of any full-season club in the minors. The club s 48 runs allowed is the tied for the third-lowest of any full-season MiLB team. THESE BIRDS ARE ON FIRE On May 24, the Pelicans were just 23-22, sitting in third place in the Southern Division, 4.0 games behind Buies Creek. Since then, the Birds have rattled off 21 wins in 27 games, including 16 of the past 19. From May 24 on, Myrtle Beach has ceded just 61 runs (2.4 per game), surrendering more than four in a game just four times out of 27 contests. During that span, the club s 2.39 ERA is the third-best in full-season Minor League Baseball. The Pelicans 75 runs surrendered are also the fourth-fewest in full-season ball. PELICAN POINT Feeling strong of late, Bryant Flete has entered the top 10 in the CL in AVG at p.j. Higgins is fifth in TPA/SO (8.61). He ultimately decided to make the move, saying, The size of school, changing my major, my girlfriend coming to BYU and other factors just continued to get me away from Gonzaga.
