1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (17-14) at Winston-Salem Dash (11-20) Tuesday, May 9, :00 p.m. Game No. 32 Road Game No. 18 BB&T Ballpark Winston-Salem, N.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Adbert Alzolay (2-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. RHP Aron McRee (0-4, 5.14 ERA) vs. THE DASH 2017 vs. Dash in Myrtle Beach in Winston-Salem All-Time vs. Winston-Salem (.565) 2016 Regular Season vs. Winston-Salem in Myrtle Beach in Winston-Salem BUIES CREEK BASHES BIRDS FOR SERIES SPLIT Despite a career-high four RBIs from Daniel Spingola, the Pelicans fell 12-6 Sunday thanks for seven Buies Creek home runs, which tied a Minor League Baseball record. Jason Martin hit a leadoff homer, the first of his three dingers, and then Anibal Sierra blasted a three-run shot to make it 4-0 Buies Creek before Myrtle Beach came to bat. The Birds put on their first tally on an Eddy Martinez RBI single in the bottom of the first. However, the Astros scored four more runs in the second on homers from Martin and Kyle Tucker. The Pelicans got to within 9-4, but Tucker and Pat Porter went back-to-back in the sixth to put the game out of reach. AN APPETIZER: TWO PLATES OF CHEESE FRIES Over their last 10 games, Myrtle Beach s starting pitchers have through the fifth inning just twice, giving up a combined 43 runs, 31 earned, on 56 hits in 41.0 innings (6.80 ERA, 12.3 H/9). With Pelicans starters averaging just 4.0 frames per start, thankfully, the Birds bullpen has helped the club through some tough times. Myrtle Beach s relievers have actually thrown more innings than the club s starters during this stretch, ceding 22 runs, 17 earned, on 40 hits in 42.0 frames (3.64 ERA, 8.6 H/9). BUDDY GOT THEIR NUMBERS Through the season s first 31 games, Myrtle Beach has had just four starters pitch into the sixth inning. With Pelicans starting pitchers averaging just 4.1 innings a start, the Birds have had to rely quite a bit on the bullpen. In fact, the Pelicans analytics department has found that the club s starters have collectively tossed only innings, or 51.5% of the club s total (268.0 IP). The Birds bullpen has already racked up frames (48.5%) this year. At this juncture last year, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers had accounted for 61.6% (167.1) of the club s innings. The Birds bullpen was responsible for only 38.4% (104.1) of the team s innings at this point last season, recording roughly 10 outs per game. This year s relievers have needed to induce about 13 outs per game, meaning it s probably not a coincidence that the bullpen has accounted for 13 of the 31 decisions, compiling an 11-2 record (the starters are 6-12). At this time in 2016, Pelicans relievers had a 3-4 record, compared to a mark for the starting pitchers. AS IF THEY USED TO WORK TOGETHER The only two teams in the Carolina League with parent clubs in Chicago have developed quite the rivalry over the past couple of seasons. Since the start of the 2015 campaign, including the postseason, the Birds possess a (.582) record against the Dash, their friends from the Camel City. Myrtle Beach owns a slim advantage by run differential ( ), and the club s research department, PeliGraphs, has found that an astounding 37 of the 55 contests between the teams over this span have been decided by three runs or less. In those games, the Pelicans have a (.676) record, including a 14-3 (.824) mark in 2016 alone. The Birds are an even 5-5 against Winston-Salem in one-run games over the past two years. The first 10 games of the 2016 regular season were each claimed by no more than three runs. ALL BETS ARE OFF Even though Myrtle Beach possesses eight right-handed bats and one switch-hitter out of their 12 active position players, the Pelicans have hit right-handed pitching much better than left-handed pitching this year. Myrtle Beach has slashed.260/.323/.394 (.717 OPS) in 741 at-bats against righties, but those numbers fall to.207/.268/.336 (.604 OPS) in 295 at-bats versus southpaws. Ironically, the Pelicans have fared better record-wise against left-handed starters as compared to right-handers. Myrtle Beach is 6-4 when facing a southpaw starting pitcher, but their record is just against starting right-handers. PELICAN POINTS (FROM PELICANS STATS BUREAU) Making his Major League debut on Monday, Chris Bostick is the 147th former Pelican to play in The Show, and the second to debut this year. The Rochester, New York native slashed.251/.322/.412 with 31 2B, 8 3B, 11 HR and 62 RBIs in 2014, placing second in the league in runs (31) and third over extra-base hits (50). Playing at Dodger Stadium, the newest Pittsburgh Pirate went 0-for-2... Registering one hit & at least one RBI, the last three Pelicans pinch-hitters are boasting the longest such streak in recorded club history... Early in the year, Matt Rose still has not drawn a walk in an even 81 plate appearances. Set by Alex Sanchez in 1985, the record for most plate appearances without a walk to start a season is 207. Alzolay hails from San Felix, Venezuela, which is actually part of Ciudad Guayana. San Felix makes up the old town at the east while Puerto Ordaz is a new town at the west, lying on the Caroní and Orinoco Rivers and the site of the Llovizna Falls. -Ciudad Guayana was actually founded multiple times in different places, due to the continuous attacks of pirates and conquerors, which destroyed it as they went down the Orinoco River in search of El Dorado. In 1618, when he was near the old Guiana, an English expedition sent by Walter Raleigh sacked and destroyed the city entirely. In 1764, the residents were relocated to Angostura, now Ciudad Bolivar, due to the continuous attacks of English and Dutch pirates. The last foundation took place at its original site on July 2, 1961 and was called Ciudad Guayana SEASON -The Pelicans Opening Day starter, Alzolay went five innings in a 4-2 win over Lynchburg on April 6. He struck out five and walked two, while allowing two runs on five hits. -Alzolay has not allowed more than three earned runs in any start all season. Over his last four, he has worked 18.2 innings, ceding five runs, four earned, on 20 hits for a 1.93 ERA (16 K, 3 BB). -The right-hander has shown small platoon splits so far this year. Right-handed batters have posted a.668 OPS in 50 at-bats, with lefties registering a.742 OPS in 58 at-bats SEASON -Alzolay was named a Midwest League Midseason All-Star. VS. However, from the fifth inning on, it was 6.99 (29 ER in 37.1 IP, 46 H, 11 BB, 29 K) SEASON -Alzolay was named Northwest League Pitcher of the Week for July 27-August 2 after he fired six no-hit innings in a July 30 start at Spokane. -He was lethal in 2015, limiting lefties to a.179 average and.461 OPS in 56 at-bats. Righties hit.151 with a.502 OPS in 126 at-bats. That helped him finish tied for the team lead with six wins SEASON -Struggled in limited time in 2014, with lefties batting.300 with a.678 OPS in 40 at-bats. Righties hit.297, but with a.908 OPS in 64 at-bats SEASON -Allowed more than one earned run in just one of his 15 outings all season.
