1 PELICANS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT TITLE Myrtle Beach capped a memorable postseason by beating the Lynchburg Hillcats in four games to win their second consecutive Mills Cup. With their title, the Pelicans became the Carolina League s first back-to-back outright champion since the Winston-Salem Spirits (also a Cubs affiliate) in Myrtle Beach nearly pulled off this feat in the past, earning co-champions of the league in a Hurricane Floyd-shortened 1999 season (a decisive Game 5 was never played in a 2-2 series) before winning the circuit s title outright in In addition to earning the fourth championship in Pelicans history, the Birds participated in their third consecutive Mills Cup Championship Series, the Carolina League s longest run since Frederick went to three straight Mills Cup Finals from Myrtle Beach made the postseason for the sixth straight year, the longest active run in the circuit. ALL WE DO IS WIN Thanks to their second half Southern Division Championship, Myrtle Beach has now won at least one division title in four straight seasons, and five out of their last six campaigns. The Pelicans also earned winning records in the first and second halves of the season, as well as overall to continue a pair of different impressive runs. The last time the Birds had a losing half was the second part of the 2011 campaign, when they went Every other Carolina League club has suffered through at least one losing half since last season. Meanwhile, the Pelicans have now posted six consecutive overall winning seasons dating back to 2010, when they finished a woeful (.414). No other team in the circuit can trace their last losing season back past WHAT DOG DAYS OF AUGUST? Myrtle Beach s August was arguably the most successful month in recorded club history (through the 2005 season). The Birds finished August with a 22-5 record, their most victories in any month of recorded Pelicans history. In fact, the Pelicans tied with Short Season Class A Eugene, also a Cubs affiliate, for the best record in all of professional baseball during the month. Just behind the pair of Chicago affiliates? The Cubs themselves, at A BIG LEAGUE FIRST On May 17, the Atlanta Braves fired manager Fredi Gonzalez, replacing him with former Pelicans skipper Brian Snitker as the club s interim manager - making Snitker the first former Myrtle Beach skipper to pilot a club in The Show. Snitker was the first manager in the history of the Pelicans, guiding the club to a (.571) record in three seasons from He led Myrtle Beach to the Mills Cup Co-Championship in 1999 before winning it all solely in SPEAKING OF MANAGERS... In his 28th season as a Minor League manager, Pelicans skipper Buddy Bailey earned the 1,900th victory of his career on July 24. According to Baseball Reference, the Madison Heights, Va. native ranks ranks 15th in wins all-time among Minor League managers with an 1,930-1,773 (.521) record. Bailey, who s managing career began with Rookie-level Pulaski in 1983, is 11 wins shy of sole possession of 14th place, 43 shy of 13th and 80 shy of the top 10. EL CUBANITO Pelicans first baseman Yasiel Balaguert finished the season with 96 RBIs, the most ever in a campaign for a Myrtle Beach hitter. Over the year s 49 games, including the postseason, Balaguert batted.318/.360/.521, driving in 41 runs. Ernesto Mejia had previsously held the single-season RBI game with 93 during the 2008 season. CLIFTON WINS CL, CUBS PITCHER OF THE YEAR Pelicans right-hander Trevor Clifton took home a number of honors in 2016, including both the Carolina League and Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Clifton led the league in ERA at 2.72, nearly a full run better than second-place Jordan Stephens of Winston-Salem. The Maryville, Tenn. native also paced the CL in batting average against (.225) and WHIP (1.16), coming in third in strikeouts (129). Among starters, the right-hander also placed third in strikeouts per nine innings (9.8). Clifton was the first Pelican to win the honor since Robbie Ross in 2011, and the fourth Myrtle Beach pitcher to take the award. Christian Parra and Trey Hodges also accomplished the feat in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Clifton also earned Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month in both May and August. BOTE, BOTE, BOTE, BOTE ROCKING EVERYWHERE The Chicago Cubs Player of the Month for August, David Bote only continued to rake in the postseason. Bote won the Most Valuable Player award in the playoffs, batting 15-for-26 (.577/.677/.769) with nine RBIs in seven playoff games. Meanwhile, in August, his.367 average and 16 runs scored led all Cubs minor leaguers, while his 15 extra-base hits were tied for the most in the organization. He also closed the regular year riding a 27-game on-base streak, the longest of any Pelican this season, batting.365/.434/.583 with 11 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 21 RBIs. EIGHT ALUMNI REACH THE SHOW Eight former Pelicans have made their major league debut over the course of the 2016 season. The Pelicans certainly demonstrated that in Myrtle Beach drew 531 free passes during the regular season, the sixth-most of any MiLB team. In addition, the Birds handed out walked just 411 hitters, which placed them first in the league. BAT-MEN Myrtle Beach concluded the year with a 5-3 win over Lynchburg, marking the 43rd time in 64 games that the Birds have tallied at least five runs. From July 6 through the end of the regular season, the Pelicans scored 325 runs, the seventh-most in all of Minor League Baseball (5.7 runs per game).
