1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (1311, 74 Road) 2nd Place, CL Southern BIRDS WIN 32 BEHIND MARTINEZ, OFFENSE Jonathan Martinez delivered six strong innings, Rashad Crawford reached base four times, Gleyber Torres homered and Shawon Dunston Jr. laced three extrabase hits to lead the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 52 win Tuesday over the WinstonSalem Dash at BB&T Ballpark. The wiretowire victory gives the Birds a shot at their first sweep of the year Wednesday. CLEAR CANOPIES AHEAD? Following Tuesday s 52 win over the Dash, Myrtle Beach is on the verge of their first sweep of the 2016 season. With their current set marking the Birds eighth series of the year, this would be the longest into a campaign that it took for the Pelicans to register their first sweep since their 25th series from July 13, 2012 at Salem. Outside of brooming Wilmington to win the Mills Cup last year, the Pelicans last sweep was of the Blue Rocks from August 46. They last wiped away a road set from July 1518 last season against Potomac, and actually broomed the Dash at BB&T Ballpark in a rainshortened threegame series from April 1718, KEEP YOUR ENEMIES CLOSE Twentyone of the Pelicans 24 games this year have been decided by no more than three runs, the most of any team in the Carolina League. Considering nearly every team across baseball finishes at or around.500 in close games throughout a season, it is not all that surprising that the Birds have posted a 1110 record in these contest. WinstonSalem is right behind them, having played 19 contests decided by three runs or less. The Dash are 713 in games decided by no more than three runs. Ironically... RECYCLED RESULTS OVER AND OVER AGAIN The only teams in the Carolina League with parent clubs in Chicago have developed quite the rivalry of late. Since the beginning of the 2015 campaign, Myrtle Beach and WinstonSalem have played 37 times, with the Pelicans taking 20 of those meetings. During that span, the Birds are outscoring the Dash by a slim margin. True to form, their first eight contests this year have all been decided by three runs or less. Thus, in their last 37 meetings dating back to the beginning of last season, the clubs have played 27 games decided by three runs or less, including 13 onerun contests. In fact, including the postseason, 23 of the last 27 contests between the clubs have been decided by no more than three runs. The Pelicans are 1512 against the Dash in games decided by three runs or less, and 67 in onerun finishes. THE CHICKS ARE DIGGING IT Myrtle Beach has bopped 11 home runs in their last 13 games after hitting just three in their first 11 contests. They last launched 11 in a 13game stretch from 8/148/28 of last season. at Wednesday, May 4, :00 a.m. BB&T Ballpark WinstonSalem, N.C. In fact, during the last 18 games, coinciding with the beginning of the second turn through the rotation, Myrtle Beach s starters have yielded more than two earned runs in an outing just three times. During that span, Pelican lidlifters have combined for a 2.89 ERA (32 ER in 99.2 IP). Birds starting pitchers have surrendered only 80 hits (7.2 H/9) during that span, while walking 33 (3.0 BB/9) against 65 strikeouts (5.9 K/9). IS THE STRUGGLE REAL? For the ninth time in the past 13 games Tuesday, Pelicans relievers were charged with at least one run. During that span, the Birds bullpen has surrendered 23 runs, 19 earned, on 46 hits in 44.1 innings (3.86 ERA), causing the collective pen ERA to swell from 1.83 to However, there may be a sign that the bullpen is turning the corner, as Birds relievers have yielded only two earned runs in the last 15 innings. RANGE ROVERS Myrtle Beach has made at least one error in 15 of its 24 contests this season, and is in a tie for third in the Carolina League with 26 miscues. In addition, the club s pitching staff has only 167 strikeouts in innings (7.0 K/9), the fewest of any team in the circuit. So with all those extra base runners and balls put in play with a chance to find a hole, how is it that only one team in the Carolina League has allowed fewer runs than the Pelicans? Judging by the club s defensive efficiency, a simple statistic that tracks how many balls in play the defense turns into outs, the Myrtle Beach defense covers more ground and gets to more balls than nearly any other team in the league probably something that has actually hurt the club when it comes to their error numbers. According to the Pelicans analytics department, Myrtle Beach has turned 72.2% of balls in play this season into outs tied with Potomac (72.2%) for the top defensive club in the Carolina League. For context, Toronto led MLB in defensive efficiency last year at 72.1%. WALKING OUR WAY Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein has talked extensively about his philosophy of controlling the strike zone from both sides of the ball. In 2016, it is clear that that mantra has made it all the way down throughout the system, even to Myrtle Beach. Even after issuing at least four walks in six of the last 10 games, something the club had not done in the 10 contests prior Pelicans pitchers have walked only 71 batters in innings (3.0 BB/9), the fewest of any team in the Carolina League and one of the biggest reasons only one other Carolina League club has surrendered fewer runs. And on the offensive side of the ball, the Pelicans 105 free passes ranks 11th in all of Minor League Baseball, and had placed them in the top three prior to two rainouts last week.
