A Jake Rogers RBI triple put the Astros up 1-0 in the first inning, only for the Birds to tie on an Eddy Martinez RBI single in the bottom of the frame. Buies Creek piled on three runs in the second, but a leadoff homer from Tyler Alamo cut the Pelicans deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the second. However, Myrtle Beach s offense could not muster any other tallies throughout the night. A Dexture McCall sacrifice fly and Kyle Tucker RBI single put the Astros at a 6-2 advantage. Buies Creek starter Brett Adcock allowed two runs in five innings, and Alex Winkelman fired 3.1 scoreless with seven strikeouts of the bullpen. Howie Brey got the final two outs for the Astros. NO BITE TO THEIR BARK Myrtle Beach has mustered just five runs in the first three games of their series against Buies Creek, continuing an unpleasant trend of late. In fact, the Birds have plated two runs or fewer in six of their past nine games. The Pelicans hit the six-run plateau eight times in 12 contests from April During that stretch, the club scored a total of 75 runs (6.3 runs per game), tied for the eighth most in Minor League Baseball. However, in the 16 contests since then, the Birds have hit that six-run mark just four times in a game, plating a total of 58 runs (3.9 per game). They slashed.273/.330/.411 (.741 OPS) from April 18-30, but that has dipped to.234/.286/.377 (.663 OPS) in the 16 games following that point. THE LEASH IS STARTING TO COME OFF In a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three times. During that span, Myrtle Beach s rotation gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasting roughly 4.0 frames per outing. However, since that point, it appears that the Birds starters may be showing signs of turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in five of their past six games, with the lone exception being a spot start from Casey Bloomquist. The club s starters have allowed just 16 runs, 11 earned, on 25 hits in 35.0 innings (2.83 ERA, 6.4 H/9) during this time frame, lasting 5.2 frames per outing. IT S NO TREAT TO FACE BUIES CREEK With their 6-2 win over the Pelicans on Thursday, the Buies Creek Astros have now won four games in a row over Myrtle Beach, and nine of their 13 meetings this season. The Pelicans 4-9 (.308) record against the Astros has dropped them to four games behind Buies Creek in the Southern Division. Myrtle Beach s struggles against the Astros seem to be odd so far, as the Pelicans are (.630) against their other 2017 opponents this season. Myrtle Beach is looking to avoid their first sweep since a rain-shortened brooming by Salem on April last year. The last time the Birds were broomed in a non-rain-shortened series was July at Lynchburg. The last four-game sweep of Myrtle Beach was executed by Salem at TicketReturn.Com Field from April 3-6 to open the 2015 season. A HUSKY CALAMITY TO OVERCOME Myrtle Beach committed two more errors in their 6-2 loss on Wednesday to Buies Creek, more signs of a defense that is starting to come undone after a strong start to the season. The Pelicans have now made 31 errors in their last 26 games, including seven of their past eight contests. Over these last eight games, the Birds have recorded 12 different miscues. The Pelicans made just eight errors in the first 14 games of the campaign. On the season, Myrtle Beach ranks in the bottom half of the league by turning just 68.7 percent of balls hit into play against them into outs, far below league-leader Lynchburg at 71.1 percent. The major league average is 70.5 percent. PAW PRINTS VEERING LEFT By facing southpaw Matt Bower in Thursday s contest, the Pelicans will have seen a left-handed starter in three of the four games of the series between the clubs. When examining the Birds numbers against southpaws this season, that could be an explanation for the club s offensive struggles against the Astros. Myrtle Beach is slashing.227/.285/.362 (.647) against left-handed pitching in That line rises to.251/.313/.381 (.694 OPS) when facing a right-handed pitcher. Those issues against southpaws are interesting, considering of the Pelicans 12 active players, just two are left-handed batters and one is a switch-hitter. Steele was the second player from George County to sign with Southern Miss, following in the footsteps of Mason Robbins, who played for the Winston- Salem Dash in The number 21 is special to Steele. His father, Ben, wore it as a wide receiver in the mid-1980s at the University of Alabama before a back injury ended his career. Justin s grandfather also wore the number playing professionally in Japan. Justin s father, Ben Steele was recruited to Alabama by Paul Bear Bryant, but ended up playing for Ray Perkins after Bryant retired. -Justin s older brother, Jordan, pitched at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College SEASON -After allowed just one earned run on April 8 at Lynchburg, Steele fired five shutout innings against the Hillcats on April 13. The lefty followed that up with 5.1 shutout frames against Buies Creek on April 18. Thus, coming into his start on April 23 at Down East, Steele had gone 11 innings in a row without yielding a run. -Steele has shown a hefty platoon split so far, with lefties just 8-for-38 (.637 OPS) against him, compared to an.826 OPS that right-handed batters have put together in 88 at-bats SEASON -Steele had two starts in which he gave up eight runs.
