1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (65-59, 22-32) at Wilmington Blue Rocks (64-59, 25-28) Saturday, August 19, :05 p.m. Games No. 125 & 126 Second Half Games No. 55 & 56 Road Games No. 61 & 62 Frawley Stadium Wilmington, Del. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn Game 1: RHP Kyle Miller (4-3, 4.38 ERA) vs. LHP Cristian Castillo (6-10, 3.92 ERA) Game 2: RHP Thomas Hatch (4-10, 4.09 ERA) vs. LHP Colin Rodgers (2-4, 4.68 ERA) vs. THE BLUE ROCKS 2017 vs. Blue Rocks in Myrtle Beach in Wilmington All-Time vs. Wilmington (.564) 2016 Regular Season vs. Wilmington in Myrtle Beach in Wilmington OFFENSE ERUPTS IN 13-6 ROUT OF DASH Zack Short reached base five times to lead Myrtle Beach to a 13-6 rout of the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark. The Pelicans broke a tie with four runs in the fourth before adding another four tallies in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead. Birds starter Duncan Robinson needed just 54 pitches to scatter three hits and get through five scoreless innings. The Dash plated two runs in the sixth, and each side grabbed another two runs in the seventh. Winston-Salem scored twice more in the eighth, but three more Pelicans runs in the ninth widened the margin to Roberto Caro s three RBIs led six Birds who drove in a run in the victory. MORE ON THURSDAY S OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION Myrtle Beach s 13 runs in Thursday s win at Winston-Salem set a new season-high, and it was only the third time all half that the Birds had hit double-digit tallies. For perspective s sake, the Pelicans compiled double-digits five times in the second half of the 2016 campaign. Prior to Thursday, Myrtle Beach hadn t scored that many runs in a contest since rolling by Salem 15-4 on July 30 of last season. In Thursday s game, eight of the nine Pelicans in the order collected at least one hit, and six different hitters registered a multi-hit contest. Six Birds also drove in at least one run. FOR STARTERS Duncan Robinson s five shutout innings marked the seventh consecutive game that a Pelicans starting pitcher had yielded no more than two earned runs. Over the past seven games, Myrtle Beach starters have surrendered just nine runs, eight earned, on 27 hits in 38.1 innings for a 1.88 ERA (6.3 H/9). Birds starting pitching has whiffed 29 against 10 walks since this run began on August 12. SHORT AND SWEET Heading into play on Saturday, Myrtle Beach shortstop Zack Short has reached base multiple times in eight of his last 16 games. While his 17-game on-base streak came to an end on Wednesday, Short has reached in all but one of his last 19 games. A product of Sacred Heart College, Short has actually reached base at least once in 24 of the last 27 contests, slashing.330/.417/.500 with three doubles, two triples, three home runs, 13 RBIs, 14 walks and one hit by pitch during that span. REMEMBER THE ALAMO Pelicans catcher/first baseman Tyler Alamo entered play on June 18 batting.243/.294/.427 (.721 OPS). However, in the 50 games since, the Orange, Calif., native has hit.309/.353/.387 (.740 OPS) with nine doubles, two home runs and 14 RBIs. Heading into Saturday s contest at Wilmington, Alamo has matched a season-high six-game hitting streak, and he s been particularly hot over the past 21 games. Since that 21-game roll began on July 27, Alamo is 25-for-73, slashing.342/.385/.411 with five doubles, six RBIs, four walks and one hit by pitch. Thanks to this hot streak, Alamo has entered the Carolina League s top 10 in average at.280. THE NORTH REMEMBERS For whatever reason, Myrtle Beach, coming off four wins in a five-game set at Winston-Salem, has played significantly better against their Southern Division rivals this season. The Pelicans have posted a collective (.560) record against Buies Creek, Carolina, Down East and the Dash. However, against Northern Division foes, the Birds are a combined (.469), including a woeful (.393) away from home. Myrtle Beach begins a three-game series Saturday at the Wilmington Blue Rocks, who reside in the Northern Division. DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS The Pelicans huge gulf between their FIP (3.45) and ERA (3.73) can be explained with one stat: batting average on balls in play (BABIP). The club s.313 BABIP allowed is far above the baseball-wide.300 average. That means that there is some mixture of poor defense (the club s 125 errors are the third most in the Carolina League) and bad luck allowing more balls to drop in for hits, and therefore, more runs to score. This.313 BABIP against ranks in the bottom half of the league and is the club s worst since surrendering a.321 mark in PELICAN POINT Myrtle Beach will engage in its ninth doubleheader of the season in Saturday s twin bill at Wilmington. Following a sweep of Winston-Salem in a double-dipper earlier this week, the Birds are 9-7 in twin bill contests. The Pelicans have swept three doubleheaders, been broomed in two others and then split the other three. UPCOMING PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS AND GAME TIMES DATE TIME OPPONENT PELICANS STARTER OPP.
