1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (58-71, 24-35) at Down East Wood Ducks (56-73, 21-38) Friday, August 24, :00 p.m. Game No. 130 Second Half Game No. 60 Road Game No. 65 Grainger Stadium Kinston, N.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Cory Abbott (4-5, 2.97 ERA) vs. RHP Steven Bruce (5-8, 3.19 ERA) BIRDS BLOW LATE LEAD IN LOSS TO DASH The Winston-Salem Dash used a four-run eighth inning Thursday to beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5-4 from BB&T Ballpark. The Dash plated the game s first run in the second inning before a Luis Ayala RBI single equalized the margin at one in the fourth. The Birds took the lead with a three-run seventh inning. Jhonny Pereda s RBI single coupled with a Winston-Salem error brought in two runs. Jared Young then collected an RBI base hit of his own to extend the lead to 4-1. However, in the bottom of the eighth, the Dash used two bases-loaded walks and two sacrifice flies to move in front of Myrtle Beach. The contest featured 16 walks between the two clubs, with Roberto Caro and Christian Donahue each registering three free passes. TODAY IN PELICANS HISTORY August 24 has been a special day for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans recently. A year ago today, Pelicans manager Buddy Bailey became the 11th manager in Minor League Baseball history to reach 2,000 career wins when the Birds beat the Down East Wood Ducks 5-4 from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. On August 24, 2016, Myrtle Beach won 2-1 in 10 innings at Carolina to clinch a postseason spot en route to the club s fourth Mills Cup Championship. START SPREADING THE NEWS Over the last 20 games, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers have ceded three earned runs or less 19 times. During that span, the club s starters have pitched a total of 96.0 innings, yielding 35 earned runs on 73 hits for a 3.28 ERA. The Birds bullpen has started to heat up recently as well; After posting a 6.38 ERA due to 13 runs, all earned, on 27 hits in 18.1 frames in the seven games from August 2-11, Pelicans relievers have allowed just 11 runs, nine earned, on 38 hits in 46.2 innings (1.74 ERA) over the last 11 contests. AND NOW OUR WATCH HAS ENDED Myrtle Beach was officially eliminated from the postseason on Wednesday, ending a seven-season playoff run that had matched a Carolina League record ( Kinston Indians). The Pelicans had not missed the postseason since With Thursday s loss at Winston-Salem, Myrtle Beach has recorded its first losing season since the Birds went (.414) during that 2010 campaign. THE WEEK AHEAD WHO S ON FIRST? After posting a 6.23 ERA in his first three starts with Myrtle Beach, Cory Abbott has surrendered more than two earned runs in just one of his last eight starts. During that span, the San Diego native has posted a 2.01 ERA thanks to 13 runs, 10 earned, on 34 hits in 44.2 frames. A second-round pick in 2017 out of Loyola Marymount, Abbott has whiffed 46 against 14 walks over this run. Out of the 93 Carolina League pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched, Abbott ranks in the top 25 in both strikeout percentage (13th, 26.5 percent) and FIP (14th, 2.99). When opponents do put the ball in play, Abbott has suppressed hard contact by posting a 14.0 percent line drive percentage, the 10th-lowest in the circuit. NO PEACH HOUSE During the month of August, the Birds are batting just.212/.291/.280 to post a.571 OPS, far below their leagueworst mark on the season of.635. Over the first 21 games of August, Myrtle Beach has mustered just 25 extra-base hits. The Pelicans are also a woeful 32-for-157 (.204) during the month with runners in scoring position, plating a total of 58 runs (2.8 per game) in August. KEEP YOUR ENEMIES CLOSE Over the Pelicans last 29 contests, 25 have been decided by three runs or less, including a remarkable 20 by just one tally. In the 100 battles prior to this run, the Birds had played in just 20 one-run games. On the season, Myrtle Beach has played 84 games decided by no more than three runs, the second-highest total in the Carolina League. The Pelicans are (.500) in those engagements. Eight of the Birds last 11 contests have been decided by one score. PELICAN POINTS Thanks to a four-game series split in Winston-Salem, Myrtle Beach has stretched their run without a set loss to four. This is the club s longest roll without a series loss since a season-best six straight from May 21-June 10. During that span, Myrtle Beach won 15 of 17 games, including nine in a row during the tail end of the stretch... The Birds have hit just 52 home runs this season, and the club is on pace for just 56 long balls this year. That mark would be the lowest in club history (64 homers, 2013).
