Alzolay tossed 6.1 no-hit innings before ceding his first base knock in game one. The right-hander then finished off the Dash for the Birds first complete game shutout win of the season, and Myrtle Beach s Carolina League-leading fourth blanking. Alamo s fourth-inning homer was all the Pelicans needed offensively. However, in the twin bill finale, Myrtle Beach s offense mustered just one run in a 5-1 loss. A SIGNATURE ACHIEVEMENT Adbert Alzolay no-hit Winston-Salem for 6.1 innings in game one of Wednesday s doubleheader, bleeding that into a complete game shutout of the Dash. That performance carried some interesting history from the last couple years for the Pelicans against the Dash. Prior to Alzolay, the last Myrtle Beach starter to toss a complete game win was Jonathan Martinez on July 6 of 2016 at Winston-Salem. Meanwhile, Alzolay losing his no-hit bid in the last inning was eerily similar to what happened to Duane Underwood Jr. against the Dash on June 26, 2015, also at BB&T Ballpark. Underwood carried a no-hitter into the seventh of a twin bill opener, only for Adam Engel to break it up on a leadoff double. The Birds have not fired a no-hitter since Nick Tepesch and Jimmy Reyes combined to do so against Wilmington on May 19, The only other no-hitter in Birds history came on July 23, 2000, when Tim Spooneybarger and Christian Parra no-hit Frederick in seven innings. STUCK IN THE FOOTHILLS Over their last 12 games, Myrtle Beach s starting pitchers have through the fifth inning just three times, giving up a combined 47 runs, 35 earned, on 64 hits in 51.0 innings (6.18 ERA, 11.3 H/9). With Pelicans starters averaging just 4.0 frames per start, thankfully, the Birds bullpen has helped the club through some tough times. Myrtle Beach s relievers have only slightly fewer innings than the club s starters during this stretch, ceding 23 runs, 18 earned, on 43 hits in 45.0 frames (3.60 ERA, 8.6 H/9). However, there may be signs of fatigue, as that ERA mark is much higher than their 2.98 figure for the season. IS THAT HIEROGLYPHICS? Through the season s first 33 games, Myrtle Beach has had just five starters pitch into the sixth inning. With Pelicans starting pitchers averaging just 4.1 innings a start, the Birds have had to rely quite a bit on the bullpen. In fact, the Pelicans analytics department has found that the club s starters have collectively tossed only innings, or 52.7% of the club s total (281.0 IP). The Birds bullpen has already racked up frames (47.3%) this year. At this juncture last year, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers had accounted for 62.5% (181.0) of the club s innings. The Birds bullpen was responsible for only 37.5% (108.2) of the team s innings at this point last season, recording roughly 10 outs per game. This year s relievers have needed to induce about 13 outs per game. AS COMPETIVE AS CORNHOLE The only two teams in the Carolina League with parent clubs in Chicago have developed quite the rivalry over the past couple of seasons. Since the start of the 2015 campaign, including the postseason, the Birds possess a (.579) record against the Dash, their friends from the Camel City. Myrtle Beach owns a slim advantage by run differential ( ), and the club s research department, PeliGraphs, has found that an astounding 38 of the 57 contests between the teams over this span have been decided by three runs or less. In those games, the Pelicans have a (.684) record, including a 14-3 (.824) mark in 2016 alone. The Birds are 6-5 against Winston-Salem in one-run games over the past two years. The first 10 games of the 2016 regular season were each claimed by no more than three runs. PELICAN POINTS (FROM PELICANS STATS BUREAU) Chad Bell, who pitched for Myrtle Beach in parts of three regular seasons (2011, 2012, 2014), made his majors debut on Wednesday for the Detroit Tigers in Arizona. The lefty went one blank inning, striking out All-Star Jake Lamb. The Detroit southpaw joins utility man Chris Bostick as former Myrtle Beach players to make their MLB debut this season, increasing the team s total output to 148 former Birds in the club s history... Pelicans infielder Matt Rose hasn t drawn a base on balls in his first 85 at-bats this year. The MLB record, achieved by Alex Sanchez in 1985, is 207 plate appearances dawning the season without a walk. He will be making his professional debut with Myrtle Beach in 2017 after Chicago held him from pitching last season. -In order to acquaint him to the organization, the Cubs had him spend time with Low-A South Bend during their pennant run to have him get to know his new teammates. -Baseball America says Hatch has the Best Slider in the Cubs organization SEASON -Hatch made his professional debut on April 7 at Lynchburg, going five innings of one-hit ball. He allowed an unearned run while walking three and striking out two. -The right-hander left his April 17 start vs. Buies Creek after getting hit in the head with a line drive. Hatch did not suffer any concussion-like symptoms, and made his next start on April 22 at Down East. VS. ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES -As a redshirt sophomore in 2016, Hatch was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year, a First Team All-American by D1Baseball.com and a Third Team All-American by Baseball America. The Tulsa native went 9-3 with a 2.14 ERA in innings to lead Oklahoma State to the College World Series. -Hatch missed the entire 2015 season with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament that didn t require surgery. Instead, he redshirted and received a platelet rich plasma injection from Dr. James Andrews, opting against surgery because of the minor nature of the tear. -Born and raised in Tulsa, Hatch grew up a huge Oklahoma State fan. His father, Dean, walked on to the Cowboys baseball team, and Hatch has an uncle and two aunts who also attended Oklahoma State.
