1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (59-54, 16-27) at Potomac Nationals (50-62, 17-25) Tuesday, August 8, :05 p.m. Game No. 114 Second Half Game No. 44 Road Game No. 54 Pfitzner Stadium Woodbridge, Va. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Casey Bloomquist (3-4, 6.63 ERA) vs. LHP Taylor Guilbeau (2-3, 4.90 ERA) vs. THE NATIONALS 2017 vs. Nationals in Myrtle Beach in Potomac All-Time vs. Potomac (.496) 2016 Regular Season vs. Nationals in Myrtle Beach in Potomac SALEM ROUTS PELICANS TO SPLIT SERIES The Salem Red Sox rolled 10-3 by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Sunday at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Salem plated two in the first on a Conrad Gregor RBI single and then Jordan Betts double and Pelicans error. A Tate Matheny RBI double in the third added to the Red Sox lead at 3-0. A wild pitch brought in a Salem run in both the sixth and seventh frames before the Red Sox tacked on five more tallies in the eighth to go up Zack Short, who reached base three times, walked with the bases loaded in the ninth before a Salem error brought in two more Birds runs to make it THE AIR-BALL REVOLUTION COMES TO MB As Major League stars Josh Donaldson, J.D. Martinez, Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy have shown, many hitters have a lot to gain by uppercutting the ball into the air. One Pelican who may be able to relate is Eddy Martinez. On May 22, the native of Las Tunas in Cuba had a groundball rate of 58.2 percent, which ranked right at the top of the league according to Fangraphs. On that day, Martinez s batting line was sitting at.211/.258/.316. His wrc+, which quantifies a player s total offensive value on a baseline of 100 for league average, was just 56, meaning his offensive value was 44 percent worse than the average player. Since that date, Martinez has shaved his groundball rate to 47.3 percent, out of the top 10 in the circuit. He s hitting.268/.322/.429 since May 22, raising his season wrc+ to 90. Not coincidentally, when getting the ball in the air, Martinez s HR/FB rate of 14.7 percent is eighth-best in the Carolina League. QUIT PLAYING GAMES WITH MY HEART On July 8, the Pelicans sported an impressive, albeit fortunate, (.612) record in games decided by three runs or less. Most clubs across baseball post a mark around.500 in these close contests. As if to almost prove the point, beginning on July 9, 19 of the Birds last 27 games have been decided by no more than three tallies. The club has gone just 8-11 (.421) in those close games, regressing their overall mark to (.559) in contests decided by three tallies or less. This success in close games explains why the Pelicans overall record of is four games better than their Pythagorean record, which is based on runs scored and allowed, of SHORT, YET SWEET Pelicans shortstop Zack Short reached base three more times in Sunday s game against Salem. That marks the fourth time in the last five contests that he s reached base multiple times, including the third in a row. The Kingston, N.Y. native is riding an eight-game hitting streak, batting 12-for-25 (.480) with a triple, two home runs and four RBIs. Short has registered hits in 14 of the last 16 games, slashing.367/.424/.550 with three doubles, a triple, two homers and seven RBIs in that span. P.J. S PANCAKE HOUSE After a slow start to the year, catcher P.J. Higgins is reminding folks why he began 2017 in the Chicago Cubs Top 30 prospects lists. Over his last 28 games, Higgins has posted a.277/.370/.372 line with three doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs. His swinging strike rate is just 6.2 percent, the third-lowest in the Carolina League. After whiffing 75 times against 72 walks with Low-A South Bend last year, Higgins has walked 34 times against 39 strikeouts in CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL By comparing each MiLB team s home run rates both at home and on the road, Baseball America has given TicketReturn.Com Field a home run factor of 109, meaning the facility is nine percent more home run friendly than the average ballpark (park factor of 100). That 109 mark is the second-highest of any stadium in the Carolina League. However, outside of a Joey Gallo-aided 2014 team, the Pelicans hasn t finished in the top two of the circuit in dingers since However, with 89 bombs so far this year, the Birds do currently rank second in the league in homers. PELICAN POINTS Myrtle Beach has failed to win any of their last five series. The club is in half two sets after recording a set record in the first half of the season... No matter what happens in the Pelicans next three games at Potomac, the Birds will finish with a losing record in the season series against the P-Nats for the first time since 2013, when they were 7-12 against the Nationals. This year, the Pelicans are just 2-6 when playing Potomac... Activated off the disabled list prior to Tuesday s game, RHP Casey Bloomquist will be making his first start since June 18.
